Why. Welcome to a special broadcast of the St. John's passion by Johann Sebastian Bach. Part of the 1981 New England Bach Festival presented by the Brattleboro Music Center. Hopkins Center Dartmouth College and the George Bush's plane series of the University of Vermont. I'm Frank Hoffman. Launched on again where we see as the conductor of the Bach Festival Orchestra the Blanche Moby's Correll and selected soloist and this performance given a person's auditorium in Marlborough Vermont in October of 1981. The New England Bach Festival expanded its schedule from 4 to 13 performances in
1981 given in three states Vermont New Hampshire and Massachusetts chamber music concerts and con Tata concerts were given as well as performances of the Saint John passion. The work was written by Bach in 1723 and was probably first performed on Good Friday of that year while Bach was still a candidate for the cantor position at the Lutheran school of St. Thomas in Leipzig. The passion is in six parts portraying the betrayal denial trial crucifixion death and burial of Christ. Because Bach was the great musical conservative of his era. We find in his passion settings particularly this first effort in the form much of the history of the genre retained. To be sure Bach used the devices of Italian opera which had become so fashionable in the passion settings but he avoided the theatricality of his rival Telma. Once again, soloists for this performance are John Humphrey, the Evangelist; Sanford Sylvan, Jesus; Joseph Penrod, Pilot; Arlene Arget, Soprano Arias; Hilda Harris, Alto Arias; Charles Bresler, Tenor Arias; David Arnold, Bass Arias. Also performing are the Blanche Moyse Chorale, the Bach Festival Orchestra, all under the direction of Blanche Moyse. This was recorded in Parsons Auditorium at Marlboro College in 1981 and the performance was part of the New England Bach Festival.
