President Reagan's Visit to Springfield KY3 footage

It. What are we. Going to get out of life. Is. Going to be. With. Us. But what we're going to Steve are. Yeah. So I just take it to Steve at some point. President Reagan has arrived in Springfield. Air Force One just tacks it up a couple of minutes ago about 20 feet five yards to my rear here. And we expect the president to emerge at any time. He will be speaking at HAMOND center and Steve Grant is standing by at Hammond State. OK Steve back at the airport President Reagan has emerged from Air Force One with
Kit Bond today a man that he came to Missouri to campaign for the third stop in the state this year so far forget bond. White House chief of staff Donald Regan. Also accompanied the president. He's meeting now with some of the John Danforth Senator Danforth some of the Republican officials. Missouri and Green County. The president will shortly. Go to enter the limousine and will be a motorcade it across the city probably take about 15 minutes. Spend very little time here at the airport. He's running a bit behind schedule today. He leaves from Springfield to Oklahoma City. This is the beginning of what will be a 13 state campaign tour for the president extending into next week. Campaigning for Republican candidates. He's hoping of course to give an extra boost to. Some of the senatorial candidates hoping to. Hold the edge in the Senate the Republican just 53 47 now Republican.
And the predictions are it's going to be very tight. Democrats are expected to pick up at least a few seats in the Senate. President Reagan continuing to talk with some of the people here to media and. City officials. Kit Bond is hoping to pick up. At least one or two percentage points in his race with the hare It would simply be because of the president's appearance here. The White House says that it might be worth perhaps five points. They're not into giving a. Point prediction but President Reagan waiving some of the press corps and some of the people standing behind the barrier. Came out to see him the folks who are not inside the airport proper are standing behind a fence. And I doubt if they got much of a glimpse at all that the president may be stepping into the limousine now. The motorcade will begin shortly. The president.
Will have a. Busy day. We'll also tomorrows he continues on this campaign swing. In addition to talking politics he's also pushing for SDI the Strategic Defense Initiative and. You'll be talking taxes today. We're sure with the new tax bill that he signed yesterday and later. But basically this is a political. Swing into Missouri. Trying to give get bond that extra boost. And the motorcade is leaving. The president. And the limousine three cars back. Preceded by. Security. Local police. Secret Service guard and then the president. And behind him or a Secret Service people. Waving to those who are waving back.
And he's on his way to him and center. To be reporting live from Springfield regional. We're going to go back.
We're going to have one of the first of several options. This is. John
Danforth. Senior Senator. From Missouri. So. Much. This past week. And. Also. Is. Scheduled to be on the road for. The rest of the campaign for Senator Obama. Will be. Campaigning across Missouri for the next 12 days for Democratic candidate Harriet Woods. Customarily in these campaign speeches lately Mr. Danforth has emphasized that a vote for a Republican candidate is a vote of the president. He stresses importance of supporting the president on Star Wars. And that puts it this way but if you are about four star wars you're not for the president of course that's a reference to Kerry was governor by the way Governor Ashcroft will not be here because of his mother's funeral. Today we did not know if the president will see the governor before he leaves. Perhaps he will.
But as I mentioned earlier this is the first of several introductions. And of course building this suspense leading up to the presidential presence that. Dr.. Marshall Gordon. Has amassed has put forward. A superb. Effort to make sure that the president receives a warm welcome. Also the hamin center staffers were carefully with the White House advance team and preparing this visit the security checks the elaborate phone lines etc. now coming to the platform as Congressman. So we've just learned that
because of the size of the crowd. We see the president. Having. 4000 people who wanted to get in could not and were turned away. So that gives the idea that this place is filled to capacity. Again a sea of people standing in front of the platform every available seat is taken on either side of Hammon's student center. This is southeast Missouri congressman. Bill Emerson whose district extends over into Texas Skottie also into Ozark County about the mountain area and down north and bombed. Republican. State Treasurer Wendell Bailey now joining the platform. Said. Republican pressure. The pressure is particularly heavy on this race for Kit Bond if he cannot hold on to his lead the
Republican chances for overall victory in the Senate that all but disappear. And unless some other Republican candidate or another state. Goes up. To. Ronald Reagan that. Is not one
that you. Can. See. In that. Document. It.
Right. Thank you all very much. But after listening to you and those kind words by combined and by Senator Danforth had just grown six inches taller than when I came in. And believe me I can tell you it is good to be here today and swoons. Temple of Doom. The way you cheered I. Sort of thought the Bears had come in.
And. Maybe the lady bears. Finally man. Permit me a quick wink at the sugar bears. Now if the rest of you and the rest on Fraternity Row forgive me for some recognition here. They told me. They told me back in Eureka when I was a teacher back there at Eureka College. It was a fraternity for life and. It. Is good to be here in Missouri away from Washington and out in the
real America. Right. And it's especially good to be here at Southwest Missouri State University a university with a long and proud history indeed you Missouri southwest Missouri state as was established in all of 81 years ago. And believe me I'm always happy to celebrate something older than I am. And special thanks to the Bruin pride than. At. The Willard
high band. At. Springfield. Springfield Kickapoo high backed. Out and part two. Of my best. But with so many young
people here today I have a special message for you from my roommate. Nancy. Insisted that when it comes to drugs. Please for yourselves your families your future and your country. Just say no. It it by the way. Nancy impressed me so much with that. The other day in Iceland as you've heard even though it didn't have to do with drugs I just said Just say no. But it's an honor to share this story of the day with so many of Missouri's
finest. I'm sorry that your fine governor John Ashcroft can't be with us. His mother died recently. I know you all join me in extending our sympathy but greetings to three men I work with and depend upon everyday. Back in Washington your outstanding congressman Gene Taylor. Out and a congressman from the district. Bill Emerson. It though is not here. I want to mention the congressman the 6th District. Tom Coleman. It and you are a tremendously effective senator Jack Dan for. It that's what I call the Missouri 18.
And that brings me to my friend Kit Bond. I could refer to your kids as your former governor. But doesn't it seem just a little bit better to talk about Kit Bond the next United States senator from the Great. White kid understands Missouri. His family has been here for six generations and kid understands good government as governor. He started out in 1981 with an inherited deficit of 270 million dollars. He went on to balance the budget every year and leave Missouri with a 300 million dollar surplus. It
was perhaps most important kid understands economic growth and jobs. He worked closely with the big auto manufacturers and others to provide job training on the Job Training Partnership Act an initiative that was enacted by our administration and during his second term as governor. The number of new jobs that kit brought to Missouri amounted to more than 100000. Right. Now they call. They call this the show me state. No kidding. You've shown us and how. It is now. Now kids running for the Senate in a crucial election that could decide control of the Senate itself. As you may know back in Washington last week two weeks late the Congress finally adjourned a pause a moment. Are you all
heave a sigh of relief. And. Not because any of these on this platform decided to. That they would leave. There are some others there that give us a great deal of worry. But now that the legislative year has at last come to an end it's time for the campaign of 1986 to begin in earnest. Time to look in more detail the issues of the day and all we hope to accomplish for America in the years ahead. Kid and I believe that today our nation faces an historic opportunity to ensure world peace and lead the entire globe to greater prosperity and freedom. We see the opportunity for new jobs better education rising incomes and lower taxes. We see the American dream taking place and taking new shapes and rising to new heights and we say yes to the future yes to the greatness of Missouri and our nation.
Liberal Democrats like his opponent say no. Notice success noted prosperity. No to all that we've already done to get big government off your backs and out of your pockets. This is the choice forward or back. You know standing here today I have the feeling that Missouri will not only say yes to the future but. Go for it. It. You remember that when we took control of the White House and Senate just five and a half years ago we inherited an economy that the Liberal Democrat leadership had turned into the worst mess since the Great Depression. Their policy of tax and tax and spend and spend was beginning to throw Americans out of work all over the country in growing far too many right here in Missouri. It had given us double digit
inflation as we get towards you and it produced the highest interest rate since. Get ready since the Civil War. Big government become the Democrats passed. The Democrats pick was the people's monster to get big government off your backs. We cut government growth slashed regulations and enacted an across the board personal income tax cut of almost 25 percent. Then we indexed taxes making it impossible for inflation to push you into higher tax brackets ever again and just because you got a cost of living pay raise. I knew I was in for it when the hostile critics dubbed our economic plan Reaganomics. They said we couldn't do it. But while the naysayers complained and we went to work today inflation has fallen from more than 12
percent to 1.8 percent for the last 12 months but interest rates are down. Mortgage rates are down and we've seen the creation of almost eleven point seven million jobs in less than the last four years more jobs than Western Europe and Japan put together have created in the past 10 years. You know. You know I really though. Found out. Our economic plan was working when they stopped calling it Reaganomics. Sort of reminds me of a story. A lot of things when you get my age reminds us.
That. This was a Democratic fund raising rally at a hotel and outside when the lot of them were coming out there was a kid there with a bunch of puppies and he was trying to sell I'm going to say come by a Democrat puppy by a Democrat puppy. Two weeks later the Republicans held a fundraiser in the same same hall. And there it was the same kid with the same puppies whenever coming out he was saying Buy a Republican puppy. Well one of the press a newspaperman has seen him two weeks before and a kid. Wait a minute. Two weeks ago you were trying to sell these puppies as Democrats. What do you do here now trying to sell them as Republicans. Kids now they got their eyes open. But to return to the economy just yesterday I signed into law a sweeping and
historic tax reform reform that will make our entire tax system simpler and fairer and enable some eight out of 10 Americans to pay federal income taxes of 15 percent or less. That's right. Sounds good to me and I think you just indicated it sounds good to you. Tax cuts and new jobs are our record. The Republican record. Still more economic growth is on the agenda for the future. And what is the Liberal Democrats agenda. The answer is simple. Raise taxes. Speaker of the House Tip O'Neill spoke for all the liberal Democrats last year when he said and I quote. Showed the American people pay through the nose by taxation. The answer is yes but come November the American people will be going to the polls and saying loud and clear. Sorry. And sorry
Harriet. The answer is no. You're the people who pay the taxes and you know that we don't have a deficit because we're taxed too little. We have a deficit because Congress spends too much and it's about time they cut the federal budget and left the family budget alone but the contrast between us and the liberal Democratic leadership is just as apparent when it comes to judicial appointments. Since I began appointing federal judges to be approved by the Republican Senate the federal judiciary has become tougher much tougher on criminals convicted criminal defendants are going to jail more often and
receiving longer sentences. For example the average sentence in drug cases is going up by some 17 percent from 56 to 65 months. Course I could go on quoting with the reports and statistics but what it all comes down to is this since we Republicans took the White House and Senate away from the liberal Democratic leadership and remember the Senate has to confirm any judges that I appoint. We've given America tough laws and tough judges. Even the liberals who bottled up are tough anti crime bills for years have begun to climb aboard our campaign to rid America of the source of drugs. We have much more to do in this area and we will need to back up the new drug legislation with strict enforcement perhaps even stiffer penalties and the kind of no nonsense judges that will put on the bench unless we're denied that chance by a Democratic Senate. We need the Republican Senate. What I'm saying
is we need to get. Out and have Kit Bond and other Republicans help us retain control of the Senate. We can go right on fighting crime and you know here and there. I've heard some people usually on the other side try to indicate that maybe there's something in the checks and balances to have a Senate first from each party if you like what Jack Danforth been doing up there why should you send someone up to cancel his vote. That. Is kicking the other Republicans. Help us regain control of the Senate. We can go right on fighting crime. But if Democrats like his opponent gains control. Well I just have to believe it's better to have a Republican running the Senate Judiciary Committee as you
will than a liberal Democrat. Teddy Kennedy. Now my friend. Both parties talk to law and order republicans like Kit Bond make it happen in foreign affairs. We Republicans over rebuild our nation's defenses. And one new respect for America around the world and among our men and women in uniform. We've seen morale soar as we've given them the pay and the training they've always deserved. You know if I could interject something here. There's nothing that I'm prouder of than the two million young men and women who make up the armed forces of the United States. And let me say this if we must ever ask them to put their lives on the line for
the United States of America then they deserve at the same time the finest the best weapons and equipment that money can buy. And that's what we're trying to get. At something else. I just have to believe that from now on every nickel and dime dictator in the world today knows that if he wants to tangle with the United States of America he'll have to pay a price. Regarding regarding our dealings with the Soviets and as you know as you were just told up here before by my friends I just recently returned from my meeting with
Mr. Gorbachev in Iceland. This meeting was a breakthrough in our negotiations our discussions with the Soviets. We're no longer talking arms control we're talking arms reductions possibly. And possibly even the complete elimination of ballistic missiles from the face of the earth. That's an historic turnaround for the Soviets and it wouldn't have been possible without the firm support of the American people whose hard work and support of enabled us to rebuild our military might the American people know that the only way to negotiate for true peace is from a position of strength. We're closer to a real arms reductions than ever before. And it's because America is once again strong and united. So I'm very optimistic
but I'm just optimistic enough to believe that the question now isn't whether but when we reach agreements on reductions. And that's why it was heartening to find Mr. Gorbachev agreeing with me yesterday that the proposals we made in Iceland are still on the table. Our negotiators are ready in Geneva and we must not allow areas where there's agreement to be held hostage in areas where there isn't a Soviet should move the ball forward in areas such as long range intermediate nuclear forces and nuclear testing and we're prepared to do so. Unfortunately in Iceland Mr. Gorbachev decided to make all our progress hostage to his demand that we in effect kill our Strategic Defense Initiative. I had to remind him of my pledge to the American people on
SDI that in America when you give your word you keep your word and that it stands up no matter what the time or place. SDI is our insurance policy to protect us from attack or from accidents or some madman or some other country that develops ballistic missiles or in case the Soviets don't keep their side of the bargain. No. Reason no responsible president could rely on Soviet promises for his country's safety. Their record on Soviet treaty violations is clear. Now I'm not a linguist. I'm very limited in foreign languages but I did say
something in our negotiations in Iceland in Russia in Dover. I know Provera that means trust but verify. It. We can either bet on American technology to keep us safe or on Soviet promises. And each has its own track record and I'll bet on American technology any doubt that I discovered that many people aren't quite sure of what we're talking about. It hasn't been explained to the message. It's exploring a purely defensive purely peaceful technology. If the Soviets honestly want progress toward a world free of nuclear weapons they have nothing to fear from SDI. The Soviets are hard bargainers. America must be
even more patient and determined than united America must speak with one voice saying loud and clear will walk the extra mile for peace but will never gamble with America's safety. So I want to ask you a question. I think I know the answer. Can I count on your support to keep America strong and united. And on the road to. It Thank you. I kind of thought you would say that. And the other little explanation of what's been overlooked that I want you to know too is that I made it very plain that we are ready to sign a treaty that is binding as a law that would say when we have rid ourselves of those ballistic missiles on both sides and if SDI is
proven out to be the shield the defensive shield we think it can be we will be very happy to turn it over also and let the Soviet Union have it so that both of us can go on through history with being suspicious of each other. It renewed prosperity rebuild national defenses world peace on a more secure footing. All this we've accomplished. But I must tell you today that all our accomplishments all that during these past five and a half years we've struggled so hard so hard it is to reason to achieve is in danger for if we lose the Senate the Liberal Democrats will march us back to the grim days of the 70s. This is my last campaign. And if you'd like to vote for me one more time. You can do it by voting for Kit Bond.
Constitution says no but if you mean do I want to live four more years. Yeah. But how important is this election will be to me it'll be even more important to you and especially to young people for how it will shape our nation's future. So I urge all of you. And again I have you young people in high school and college especially on my mind to study the issues and come November 4th to cast your vote because you might be interested to know that the polls indicate that of all the various age groups in our nation those between the ages of 18 and 24
a majority are on our side. But I want to. I want you to go out of here not only with what you yourselves believe but I want you to go out of here as missionaries to all the others in your age group because the polls also indicate that you have the highest percentage in that age group who do not go to the polls to vote. It won't help unless you get there. And if you do you will be playing a major part in determining what the future is going to be for all of you in this country. I've been I probably shouldn't do this but I've been talking about cause I want to conduct an informal poll. And I will might even speak up so that all of
America can hear you. Do you want to go back to the days of big spending high taxes and runaway inflation. Do you want a weak and vacillating America. Would you rather have an America strong and proud and free. Do you want Kit Bond to become the next senator from the great state. You just made my day. And. You know something. You didn't hurt Chet bonds feeling it either. Well it was time to go. Now. Before leaving. I've got Oklahoma yet to do.
Before leaving. I'd like to just say how delighted I was to be able to talk to all of you young people people my age deeply believe that it's our duty to turn over to you with the same freedom and the same opportunity that our parents and grandparents handed on to us. And when we look at you and when we see your openness your enthusiasm for America and for life itself it gives us great heart way back to a time of World War Two. The chief of army staff George Marshall General George Marshall was asked. He was asked did we have a secret weapon and if so what was. And General Marshall said yes we have a secret weapon. It's just the best blankety blank kid's in the world. I've been.
All across this country I've been on campuses I've met so many of you and having ex-Gov been burned in effigy on a few campuses some years ago. I just want to tell you that George Marshall were here today he would say if you are the best blankety blank. Stepping out we're giving away those who are mailing people in the media reporting here of course as I said just a couple of minutes before leaving for Oklahoma. Bill Reagan stepping out of the president shaking hands with the son of a delegation of Republicans this was a Republican
stop over. That was the whole purpose was to come down and the president likes this section of the country because it has supported him in the past very strongly he feels very comfortable here. That was one of the reasons he accepted the invitation to come here. A large contingency. White House press corps standing to the side taking pictures of the fall of the president of course wherever he goes. The press corps plane arrived just about 10 minutes before the president's plane this afternoon. And they stayed with the president regardless of where he goes what he's doing. Kit Bond is also here along with his wife president boarding the steps now going up. And you'll reach the top turn around and probably give one last wave to Springville.
There's. And. One more for Springville policeman. And another for Springfield. And that should just about do it as far as this visit to Springville. President obviously enjoyed himself at home and center and. Make them at this.
Point. You know you want. To. Live. Up. To this week the exact. Time of the. Anniversary. There are definitely. More excited. To. See the present on violent TV. Down. Your. Teen Choice as. Well. Where you. Get. Them. To. Bear. The Bears for sure. Because. The excitement. Would be an idea. And. I brought. To. The. National. And it's I guess you
could say to them. As an issue. OK. Well you. Know. I know you will see that brother. Right right. So. You've got to do. With. These. People. You don't. See the president. On a regular basis. Well. I suppose. He's going to. Take turns and. Looks. Like he's. Really up a the program to do these and the. She has a real opportunity to see of this. And I especially like the way. Your. Second grade daughter. Made. To. Years ago. She just turned the pledge to the United States to. Collect. Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. And to the Republican. States. So that was really in keeping with my dad and. His. Political philosophy. Good luck with the. Closet. Full time. I don't even see the president today right. Around full time but he was if you had a choice. Do we. Would
you. See the president or the Bears. On a full time basis every week. Is. What. I said Reagan in my last. Couple of years ago. And that's really important to see him and everything. Right now. I went to college. As opposed to President's some point. Because I think week by week. Every get. I'll listen to politics. Time. This way to. You. I'm going to ask you know I know you want to see the president today. Well on a week to week basis if you had to choose every week that the president of the bears being hurt him to see who would you pick and one. Big. Bears. Won. Because you're better looking. The president. Is. Very good. The question is what know you will see the president live in. The week after week if he had to come here to watch somebody would it be the president of the Bears and one. Cannot say. There's. No. Chance they got this year. Being. A top calibrates he doesn't like to. Well. You. Know.
If. You don't. Do. That. It's been two years since president's campaign. When he became upset. That. He had. Come Dancing Master. You. Know. No one. Really. You. Know. The answer is. I like the Reagan one he's I like to see what's going on in the world. I just the best valentine. That's. Very good. We. Wanted to see if you want to see. Very fashionable. Boy. That's tough.
The president's real thrill for me. Is that I guess I could have something else. And. I have a lot of respect for the president a minor Democrat but the Bears are good and beat them they would be close.
