Description
Description
Slumdog Millionaire won the Oscar for Best Picture, but it also drew criticism - one critic labeled it poverty porn. The belief that slumdog misrepresents slum dwellers fueled protests and lawsuits in India. Also known more kindly as informal settlements, or shantytowns, slums are raising issues in sectors beyond the entertainment industry. Its estimated that roughly one billion people live in squatter communities throughout the world, a figure thats projected to double by 2030. Such astounding growth makes these communities increasingly difficult to ignore, and some experts argue that ignoring them is the last thing we should do. Despite the obvious problems that slums pose for their residents and others, some urban designers, architects, and advocates are starting to view them as important resources for ingenuity and innovation. Here to fill us in is journalist Robert Neuwirth, author of the book Shadow Cities.
