- Description
- Description
- Archival footage of the coverage of the House Judiciary Committee B hearings on House Bill 228 provided by reporter Brooks Read of WBRZ in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Read presents several clips in which Governor Earl K. Long argues with state legislators in favor of his amendments to the bill, which would protect the voting rights of African Americans. He also frequently mentions miscegenation. Staunch segregationist legislator Willie Rainach argues against the amendments in order to maintain segregation in all facets of life and argues that the NAACP is under the control of the communist party. Governor Long also apologizes to the nuns and school children in the gallery for his excessive use of profanity during his speeches. Ultimately, his amendments failed. The New Yorker Magazine described Governor Long\0xFFFDs tirade as a Civil Rights speech in protest of the disenfranchisement of black voters.
