- This episode of the series "Louisiana Legends" from April 17, 2011, features an interview with Paul Dietzel conducted by Beth Courtney. Dietzel served as the LSU head football coach from 1955-1961 and the LSU Athletic Director from 1978-1982. He discusses: the importance of LSU to his career; his early childhood in Ohio; meeting his wife Anne in high school; receiving a football scholarship to Duke University; his time in the Army Air Corps flying B-29 bombers in the Pacific during World War II; his studies at Miami University in Ohio; his assistant coaching positions at Miami University and West Point; becoming the head coach of LSU at age 30; the origin of the name "Chinese Bandits"; winning the 1958 National Championship; football's dominance in Louisiana; and his painting career.
- Description
- Former LSU football coach and athletic director Paul Dietzel led LSU to the national title in 1958 and barely missed winning a second title in 1959. His 46 victories coaching the Tigers places him third on the LSU list. He later coached at Army and South Carolina before returning as Athletic Director at LSU from 1978-82.
