Description
A profile of Victor Bussie, the highly influential president of the Louisiana AFL-CIO for 41 years, upon his retirement in 1997. The program covers his role as a power broker in the state legislature; his advocacy of Civil Rights, including the integration of the AFL-CIO and his efforts in easing the racial tensions in Bogalusa, Louisiana, a Ku Klux Klan stronghold; the dynamiting of his house because of his position on Civil Rights; his help in kidnapping Governor Earl K. Long so that he could be committed to a mental institution in Texas; his bitter defeat on the 1976 Right to Work legislation; his integral role in the passage of Medicare legislation; and his advocacy for the rights of women in the workplace.
