An interview with Alvin Batiste conducted by Gus Weill for Louisiana Legends. Batiste, a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, was a jazz clarinetist. He discusses playing at Carnegie Hall with other Southern musicians; growing up as an African American in New Orleans; receiving his first clarinet at age 14; sneaking into clubs in the French Quarter as a teenager to play jazz; the encouragement he received from the New Orleans music community; his exposure to the positive and negative aspects of race through music; recording and touring with Ray Charles; earning degrees from Southern University and Louisiana State University; the counsel of his father-in-law in not reacting violently to racism; teaching himself to play Charlie Parker's music on the saxophone and translating the music to the clarinet; becoming the first jazz musician in residence at a public school in the United States; organizing the Jazz Institute at Southern University; his experience of touring South Africa in 1973; and the link between drugs and music.
