Episode Description
An oral history interview conducted on August 23, 2007, with Oscar G. Richard, III, a bombardier in the 384th Bombardment Group of the 8th Air Force during World War II. He discusses: enlisting in the Army Air Corps; his training; his deployment to Europe; flying in his first combat mission; the impact of General Jimmy Doolittle on destroying the German Luftwaffe; bailing out of his plane during his third mission and being captured as a German prisoner of war; his interrogation by the Germans; his imprisonment at the Stalag Luft 1 prison camp in Barth, Germany, for 16 months; the liberation of the camp; returning home; and publishing his memoir.
