Description
Description
Tape 2 of interview with Rev. T.J. Jemison for the documentary "Signpost to Freedom: The 1953 Baton Rouge Bus Boycott." His father was president of the prestigious African-American- led National Baptist Convention, when Jemison, Jr. arrived in Baton Rouge in 1953 to lead the prominent African American congregation at Mt. Zion First Baptist Church. Jemison took a number of steps to try to convince city leaders to grant limited concessions to African American citizens of Louisiana's capital city, including an ordinance that granted African American bus riders the right to sit in empty seats designated for white riders. He eventually was elected to serve as leader of the 1953 Baton Rouge Bus Boycott and advised Dr. Martin Luther King during the Montgomery Bus Boycott. In this portion of the interview, he discusses the logistics of the boycott organization and his conversations with Dr. King.
