[Background conversation] "Good morning my name is Maynard Orm, and I'm executive director of Oregon Public Broadcasting. And even though it's gray out, in our minds it's very sunny, because we have some wonderful announcements today. Even though it's Valentine's Day, a wonderful day of its own, and also the hundred thirty of anniversary of the state of Oregon. We are going to change our call letters today. But before I talk about that, I want to let you know that Oregon Public Broadcasting has existed more than half of the time that the state of Oregon has existed. This is the 67th year of Oregon Public Broadcasting which began its operations in Corvallis on December 7th 1922, so we've been around a long time, and we've had the call letters KOAP for a long time. But as one knows, times change and things change. We
used to be known as OEPBS, Oregon Education and Public Broadcasting Service. Now we are calling ourselves Oregon Public Broadcasting. And I have the only pin I think in existence which says that. Next week- Oh John has a- J.S. May has a smaller pin, next week we hope we'll have more of those pins that we can distribute. But we are now going to be known as KOPB in Portland television and KOA- KOPB Portland FM radio. We are not moving our channels will still be Channel 10. We'll still be 91.5 on the dial but we feel that the call letters KOPB more aptly reflect Oregon Public Broadcasting. After this event is over, we're going to have refreshments here. But before we go outside to celebrate the unfurling of the banner and have a little fun, I wanted to show you a video spot of the campaign that we're going to be running on the call letter change. So John ?Frazy? if you're ready?"
"Move this podium out of the way." [Background conversation} [Video Clip] We just made a little change that makes big sense. Our Portland TV and radio call letters are now KOPB. Tune us in, same time, same places. Channel 10 at 91.5 FM. [inaudible] "One other thing I'd like to mention is that in the next few weeks you'll be seeing spots called Air Oregon around the state of Oregon that is to emphasize the statewide nature of Oregon Public Broadcasting. And since Air Oregon the airline now flew away in 1982
permanently. We felt that it was all right to use Air Oregon. It's also a follow up on the campaigns that we've had in the past called Fresh Air and a radio program called Fresh Air as well. So you'll be seeing those spots around the state in the next few weeks. With that let's all pick ourselves up and go outside and watch the unveiling of the banner and we'll let some balloons up for a little fun and then we'll come back here for refreshments. Thanks very much for coming today." "Are you ready? [Background conversation] Ok we're all set. You ready? No. Okay Good. Is George up there?" [Background conversation] Al-
"All right George. Let 'er rip. [clapping] Those are environmentally safe balloons I want you to know. [laughing] " "That's fun. [Background conversation]" [Background conversation] [Background conversation]
[Background conversation] [Background conversation] "Change the letters of our flagship station to KOPB so we can identify ourselves and let people know that's our new-our new image, our new [inaudible] for Oregon. Oregon Public Broadcasting cause indeed we are We are statewide. And, provide a service even though Oregon Public Broadcasting, I look at us too as a comprehensive telecommunications service offering many Services to help [inaudible] Group [inaudile] KBPS no, no, not at all. Oregon Public Broadcasting I think it's very clear. That there's- there's a difference." "And you spoke about the new image. What is that exactly?" "Well we're-we're planning to do more locally focused productions. We
hope to double the amount of Oregon produced productions in the next year. So I think that's very important. Of course we move into our new building, we have new equipment. We simply think that. Focusing on the needs of Oregon, Oregonians, is very important and we plan to show that in our productions. "So the new call letters say 'we're here for the whole state?" "Absolutely" "OK, Alright good. Thank you." "Sure you bet." "Do that again for me? I was still in line in... How does this this reflect the state?" "Well Oregon Public Broadcast is a general title reflecting I think the service mode Of this organization for the state as you know we have four television stations, four radio stations and about 25 ra- television and six radio translators scattered over the state. We serve 90 percent of the people and have 1.2 million listeners and viewers every week. So it's a large audience and
I think OPB reflects that Oregon Public Broadcasting." "Thank you." [Background conversation] [Background conversation] " Yeah. Put this over here so you can get the full benefit of the comics being made here." "The complete insights." [laughter] "Now, everybody go in and eat banana cake." "Let them eat cake" [inaudible] The napkin balance. It's been approved by the [inaudible]. [Background conversations] [Background conversations] [Background conversations] [Background conversations]
