Since my earliest days in government, and that goes back to my experience in running for the Oregon legislature in 1950, I have watched the progress in government regarding education. Rapid advances in technology focus our attention on the educational program and a re-evaluation of curriculum and goals. As young people face college they realize that competition faces them and the importance of meeting it and getting a job or entering a profession. Secretary of Labor Arthur Goldberg has told me that the picture of a large number of unemployed is an unhappy one. We as Americans face it. We face a world where the educated and the college trained will be those who survive. This fall increasing numbers of young people will enter college. They realize the importance of an education in competing in the world market
today. I mean the world market for getting a job or entering a profession. We are faced with continued unemployment in this country and only those who are educated and college trained will be those who will really survive.
