Description
On April 15, 2007 a new inlet broke through the barrier beach that protects Pleasant Bay in Chatham, Massachusetts. Overnight the town of Chatham faced more sea level rise than most communities will face in the next 50 years.This talk by William Sargent chronicles the changes brought about by the break up of Nauset Beach. Eight homes were swept into the Atlantic Ocean in almost as many months. The town faces the collapse of the third most lucrative fishing port in New England. More homes will be lost as the inlet continues to migrate north. Chatham is the canary in the coal mine. Over 200 other coastal communities in the United States will face similar problems as their barrier beaches break down in the face of rising seas.Sargent also discusses recent changes on Plum Island and Nantucket.
