[Leo Tierney] There are apartments in Roxbury that should go to Roxbury residents. Leave us the hell alone! Leave the Blacks alone! Leave us live in peace. That's all I have to say. [cheering] [Reporter] City councilor Jimmy Kelly stirred things up tonight by linking this year's housing integration to the raw memories of school busing in South Boston a decade ago. Kelly seemed to suggest that violence is now all but unavoidable. [Kelly] It's going to be making examples of some kids who perhaps engage in some activity, and I certainly hope they don't, but we know they're going to. We know that some adults will. Misguided adults, misguided youths, but they are going to be made an example of. And there are some people in here, or certainly your sons or your daughters, that they're gonna serve time for civil rights violations. That's another problem. [applause] And if the Mayor Flynn- if the mayor will admit that he's been the mayor of the city for 4 years now, well have they been denied? Have they been discriminated for the past 4 years? Has Doris Bunty denied Blacks the right to move into a development of their choice?
If they have, they're much more guilty than any person in this room. They should be hauled into court and made to answer for their charges. [applause] [Flynn] As I look around this room I've had people who have worked against me, who have voted against me, who have also supported me enthusiastically, and I'm very very proud of that. But I'll tell you one thing here to you: one thing that I always want to be remembered as, not somebody who is the best vote-getter in South Boston. I go to meetings, and I like to do one thing and one thing firmly, and that is to tell the truth. What we're talking about here is fair and equal access to public housing in the city.
