At the beginning of no Dean's yammers regime the CIA which had helped bring him to power the embassy and most observers felt he was the strong leader that South Vietnam needed. In 1955 Senator Mike Mansfield spoke to Edward R. Murrow about it. Do you think that what is left of that. I certainly do I think that we can be pulled out of the work and keep us honest and incorruptible. I've been covering every concern they have been. Put to receptions which this man has been receiving throughout his country and it appears to me that this man is on the right road to going to communism. Chinese peoples especially the Vietnamese and respecting the leadership we expected miracles of his
regime consolidated its power it became clear that whatever else he was he was not a miracle worker. Aloof and aristocratic became increasingly remote from the people.
