It's not really right now but it's private or whatever they're serious or so a little bit tough you know. Sure right. Will this you carry that switch these tools than just the way that we learn the concepts here is completely different than most of the things I learned throughout my high school and my college career. We learn the concepts on our own and so we're totally responsible for our learning. We have a connection here because they're all ideas. It's still hard because it doesn't matter about it it's what you know that hurts anybody. You really have to think through carefully what you're being asked to look at and predict right. The students start from the very beginning by making observations that make plausible certain assumptions that there is a flow through a circuit and that the brightness
of the ball indicates the amount of flow. They then test those assumptions in a variety of circuits and through their observations by connecting bulbs in series and in parallel develop the idea of resistance parallels that really adding resistance. OK so in this experiment students are developing a rule for adding bulbs in parallel. They start with two bulbs in series and then add a third bulb in parallel with one of the others and observe how the brightness of the bulb changes. Just heard right. This is the resistance. Right right right. As the students are working through the materials they're developing a model that at any stage may not be completely correct. We have incorporated experiments in exercises that
try to address some of the more common difficulties that students have and developing their model. They're going to the battery is increased. During the Institute it's very common to work in pairs. My partner and I would get stuck on a spar we would have a question on a spot we returned to our other table partners and asked them what they thought it all out because I got to thinking about what we talked about yesterday and what they have to be the same brightness right. But yesterday we talked about how you have that junction point to where. To put the double flow through the battery right. So with this we said that would make this brighter because it's getting twice as much. But because this is in series with us we're going to be like that half brightness and this would be the same brightness as a single in a single circuit in discussions with one another both correct and incorrect ideas are expressed.
That's the reason that they come to identify some of the caps in their own understanding because they're in series but because this is getting twice the flow it has to be bright. If you're going to teach this material in a meaningful way they need to have a deep understanding. They need to overcome those conceptual difficulties that many. To the study of this material they cannot do this by being told they need to live through the experience.
