A. I'm really proud to be here with so many of law's friends some of Lowell's friends who came out today to ride school buses in support of desegregation included lieutenant governor Evelyn Murphy former Red Sox pitcher Louie Tiana and Grace car again. The mother of astronaut Christa McAuliffe and I am here this morning think as Bob Moon with your own walk ins call me to ask you to stand alone can't even talk to them about them seems. Well I'm very glad. Do you want to put aside our political differences for just one day. Well that's right. Robert Kennedy says he called the celebrities and public officials in to help him build faith in a bussing program that has gotten off to a shaky start. We think that it may be a period of a few more days or weeks until
the rats are in their final form until we can actually identify how many drivers will be needed to service to the system for the rest of the year and it will be at that point that we can begin to really formulate our driver work for us in earnest and. Try to recruit the proper number of people. I mean right now it's a lot of chaos. But in the wintertime you're going to have people getting killed over here. That's what I feel they have no business out here on the streets until 9:00 9:30 10:00 o'clock in the mornings. The mother is in love with the air until 4:00 5:00 waiting for the kids people. That is totally and completely political. This didn't happen and I just some point that you know what has happened this year I'm ashamed of these people and I oppose any outsiders being called to come into law and make an issue out of this local school committeeman George Harris is a staunch opponent of the city's busing plan. He's campaigning to stack the city council and school committee with anti busing forces
who might alter the state mandated central enrollment plan. I want at the next election is that there will be. Four. School Committee men elected. Who will be able to. Go in another direction and so far as integrating all of our students and not doing it by busing as mayor. Robert Kennedy cast the swing vote that approved the desegregation plan last spring. This city has two choices whether they want to go back to what happened to Boston 15 years ago or have a federal judge running this city or whether we are going to control our own destiny. That's what it's all about the future of Lowell. Next Tuesday's election is viewed by some as a referendum on stopping segregation but it could affect whether implementation gets better or worse. Milk.
Thank. You. Thanks.
Thanks. Thanks. Thanks. Thanks.
Like. What.
Way. Way. Way. Way. To ask. You. Know who.
Will. Lead. The way.

Episode Description
Marcus Jones reports on tension over school desegregation in Lowell. Jones reports that Robert Kennedy (Mayor of Lowell) called on supporters of school desegregation to show support by riding buses with students in Lowell today. Jones' report includes footage of Kennedy addressing supporters, including Evelyn Murphy (Lieutenant governor of Massachusetts), Luis Tiant (former Red Sox pitcher) and Grace Corrigan (mother of astronaut Christa McAuliffe). Jones reports that George Kouloheras (Lowell School Committee) is a leader of the anti-busing movement in Lowell. Jones reports that Kuoloheras is campaigning to elect anti-busing candidates to the Lowell School Committee in order to overturn the present school desegregation plan. Jones interviews Kouloheras. Kouloheras says that he hopes that new school committee will reject busing and find another way to integrate schools. Jones also interviews Michael Kennedy (Regional Manager, National School Bus Service, Inc.) and Donna Senior (Lowell parent) about the bus routes in Lowell. Jones notes that the coming elections will decide how school desegregation is implemented in Lowell. Jones' report is accompanied by footage of students and school buses in Lowell. This tape includes additional footage of school buses on the streets in Lowell.
