Charles Eliot Norton Lecture Series At Harvard University; Lionel Trilling: Sincerity And Authenticity: Authentic Unconscious
- Transcript
It is my pleasure tonight to think with your trolling on behalf of the Charles Elliot lecture committee for this remarkable. I think I may say this beautiful series of lectures with what is going on. Perhaps you can even hear what is going on. What a pleasure. What a privilege to be here. The value of history and literature quietly formally reaffirmed the Charles Eliot Norton professor of poetry is if I may an inept simile like the proverbial iceberg. No temperamental implications of course. The part that you see here from is a small fraction of his life during his year in the community. He
has four graduate and undergraduate frightening. Who put the kind of fundamental questions that only the young have the nerve to. He is a member of an undergraduate. He's an honorary member of the department and may be asked to take part in seminars. He has the dubious privilege of attending faculty meetings. He's a sort of Embassador extraordinary from his own university to this university. The institutions of learning in the neighborhood. In fact I've discovered this year that the neighborhood extends as far south as the University of Connecticut and as far north as the wilds of darkness.
Mr trolling has played his part with the intelligence that he has displayed here night after night. His subject this evening will be the authentic and. Thank.
You. It
is fiction. It is.
I did. And in it. So. And if
I did. And you. You. It. But as it.
Is. Thank you and. That. It is. And intention.
He was conscious. You know how. To. It's. And.
They are. It's and. Right. You. That. Oh.
If. You do. Yes.
But how. And and. But. That.
Yeah.
He said. This is
me. And. Well.
It. The end. OK. The. Why
the age. As it is. Now. This. Is escalating. Let me. Oh it.
It was. It. It. But. It. The. Yes. Yeah. At.
Family.
And you. Yeah. Yeah. And it's destructive. It's an action.
But. Action. You. The. So. Good. Yes.
The pragmatic. He is.
Yeah. You. He is. Well. And. I think
in on the. And. And. And. I think. Yeah. How
much. Temple. Well. One. Right. Yeah. Like it. In the pub. I think it can be a
private out but it can make a contribution to ideology or action. Exactly. Public intellectual time. Again why the problem of the individual is as alien in that relation which represents as a necessary condition of man's and happiness. And yet and in a way that makes an indigenous prophecy. The bags the book stands for contemporary sentiment now. As perhaps you gauged public attention and
approval he and his compassionate transactions will take out whatever. The psychic dynamic explicate blind psychic pain is inflicted. They seem to be in his psychiatric. Staying as indigenous pain pain because of its process. His concept of the idea that external pressure is exerted upon the mind specifically upon the sense of self. It is manmade.
It is family. And this pressure in the family. And which is the family
situation. Even See. Parents have to go. That's followed by the. That is really. So if they are as corruption. Questioning it's
a compromise. That's the climate of opinion. His relation to civilization is likely to be sympathetic but stands at a contemporary culture. It has to take away that follow from it. And I doubt
it. That. If you just give a structure here. I don't like the tension. I can do just do it like they are responding in a complex argument with two between them. Of course differences of temperament. The demonstration of life against death under the aegis of religious mystical their intentions. To demonstrate the feasibility of general human happiness and the
practicability of freedom from. As well as the right lines of their reasoning. So I feel justified in attempt to paraphrase them together. I should like to deal separately. And paradox aspect. The power in the fact that the feasibility of happiness and freedom his position and nation is as conservative as Freud his change in the dynamics of the psyche. Observation of changes in
between the publication of civilization and its discontents and the publication of the nation and its technology. And the degree and. In this the general relaxation has had an individual to change. You ration all the answers. Change is still to be wrought. Find satisfaction in them and indeed he regards them with his net for example.
One unfortunate result of the relaxation of inhibition has been as a transportation. All of the family which has become so much less decisive in the rearing of the child that. The morphology of the psyche of Freud describes this point. We're human. He is not disposed to take account of the harm done to the. Severity of the soup as it was a classic play brought into being by the family. On the contrary his concern was with the devolution of the power of the super which results in a degree of individuality and autonomy he says. Through the struggle the struggle with unfolds as the target of love and aggression. The
younger generation and societal life. I did this in the past with impulses ideas and need their own. Consequently the formation of the soupy or oppressive modifications of their impulses their renunciation and very personal experience precisely because of this that I just left pain and and life still retain a piece. Of. It. But in all contemporary cultural situation with a diminished. Family especially of the Father the individual's ego has shrunk to such a degree that the antagonistic processes between an eagle.
And their classmates. Dispensation he says. Nation of the ego. The stage of individualization. The generic Adam becomes directly. Say. About the development of the individual before. He means what I meant when he spoke of the sentiment of being and its ideal condition of autonomy which the social experience tends to negate the sense of the reduced sentiment of being all his contemporaries as compared with that of the Spartans or the Persians. Comparing the citizens of Geneva is parallel Hughes's preference. Well the personality type shaped by a repressive society such as Freud took for granted as against the personality type of blandly on this is
that as with anaesthetic of personality and part of the judgment which makes up the contemporary situation it's plain that he simply likes people to have character. It may in repression but also like the aesthetic preferences bound up with political judge who sets great store by the intransigent and even subversive that may derive from repression and sublimation it along as a result of the increase in sexual freedom. Sexual relations themselves are do that. Diminished in intensity and allow them with the general belief the affluent. Control to
a greater extent than the traditional repressive individual less free when the social repression continues to be actually evil. And much conscious that consciousness tends to be reduced. The task of getting that is the individual to find his place in society and. This nation. The fact is that the general happiness happiness in the.
Scripture is happy with the end of the end of it. And with them and their such consciousness. So I would describe the relation between the individual and the culture in nineteen fifty five. Since that time of consciousness and anxiety have come into their own. Which. Has yet to be. That is my apprehension.
It would be but I suspect this. The repressive power provides. And liberation. AS. A 25 year by the successful operation. Oh. Successful operation of the principle has reduced the harshness of the stands thus making the repression of the instincts necessary. And Freud that it has been changed
in anticipating changes and and and I think my own liberation direction of dialectic which is deeply complex and as I've said ground or historical instrument the psychic change leading man. To change color is going to top that. And now. We can't perhaps suggest a. Shared affinity with.
I like identified as here. And I like all the desperation of sexual bondage and and Brown after him generous. He represents the founders as an agent of repression and a. High. Priest. Well you know what. The body says the body is in every minute particular and embraces from the head even to the feet and not a High Priest entering by a
secret place. Readily seen this and specifically genital sexuality. The general tendency of antagonism to the head of the other mental faculties. And rather than. When civilization and its Discontents sexuality is a flaw in civilization it is general genitals that he means and is usually out of his recognition that the sexual and comprised. Component instincts and gradually the
talent he has primed and with the extra. And ultimately subordinated to talent and those individuals and sexual development. This nation. Like in civilization. The continue. Of the pre in adult life. He believes that repression. No. The life of crime.
Very. Lack of freedom. Exact date. Supply. END. Again. Bit. In process. And into. Were just there. The death instinct as it is directed. And it should be preceded by a
somewhat less alien place. But you see them a means of guilt and of depriving the death should be clearly understood what. I'm sanctioning to the nation which is my character formation with the infant section. All right. In finding a fundamental connection between Jenna and her legs
we might like to know the body. Ah. Roy. Right. The primacy of reason. And the step to life. Grasping and
taking action. The throne now indicates. This reply. Do you want one easily can. Imagination is more comprehensive and more truly human. Analytical. Nature. It is through intuition through taking the shape of things S..
We do well and watches passively. Height. I truly develop even the principle but joyful. And. To concentrate my attention
on. It's tragic. What I said. Too big to eat. With It. By his act his imagination is fine.
The life of a man. Five six. And that. And. Praise. I expect.
And especially you. And. So that has come true. Suppose
now that he met with the invention of hospitals. Is magic. Nothing. And so. Charismatic. Yeah. I mean you. Yeah. You know.
Why.
