San then Grover. Yes it really is me. Maybe I changed that much my God Sam. I'm so glad to see you as in 25 years Mark you too I just got in. But that's all you have. Because it goes with the joy of a lie anyway. And Sam welcome to Canada. The true north strong and free. Who am I going to say you've been doing research. I had the time. Let me sit down Jimmy please. I'm tied. Oh yes of course I'm sorry. Can I still tell you the truth I could never stop you before you look rotten weary and then and just the Jarrad syndrome off a little more permanent and unpleasant and obscure ailment that attacks intellectuals mostly in the back. I'll get over it. You look older than your newspaper pictures. Last time was six months ago. We age fast under certain conditions. Yes and it was I know I was Claire and the kids
or I think they separated. Oh I didn't know. I'm sorry you're alone and I know I have a mistress. That wouldn't upset the campus would. Oh no we know all about such things. We watch TV. Oh and by the way there's a little welcoming party tonight at my place and a press conference this afternoon OK. I plan a Jamie show it's OK. I've even got a new photo out of it. We're very proud you chose us with your reputation you could have picked any university on the continent a lefty you sound pompous. Doesn't suit my memory of you so cut it out OK. I came here because you're here. I need old friends. Besides no other university would have me. Well I can't believe that not that I applied. Well you sense these things after a while. The popular radical English prof. A great man but not on our campus police not aka campus.
You're testing me Santa aren't you. Yes yes I am. Well we did think about that but we decided you don't scare us Dr. Grover. Thanks to me I am grateful. Really there's no need to be but I've got to be. I'm a refugee. Even as I say the word I can hardly believe it. An American refugee a refugee from America from not too from. So good old lefty right out of being president of the universities would you. I'll tell you a secret. You love it. Worse I can't live without it. Sandy's upper middle class stuff is just great. It beats me why we ever wanted to make a revolution except I've got a 16 room O's sought us rimming both servants and a portfolio of blue chip stocks. Well like we used to say right now I think do good for the working class. Was it rough set rough What's six months in
jail being wounded or becoming a refugee. Jail Jail. Funny that scares people most of all it always scared me. It's interesting James. I mean about us intellectuals. We can accept pain of heart attacks migraine headaches and becoming a refugee. Well given the right reasons is almost like wearing a medal. But prison is that if the authorities only knew a Ph.D. is no measure of a stone wall is an iron bar oh crap Jamie cut it out. Now I recognize your old snappy sandstone walls I am crap brutality. That's what's Gaz as brutality living with sexual deviants gunman the assault and battery boys being scedule be beaten up by a mindless A because you're an intellectual discovering that all your research all your study all your insight is absolutely no defense against a flying fist. Or you can to reason with a mind as a. They're worse than politicians.
You can't. You want to know if it was rough. Did I get a shiv in my ribs. They gang up on me in the exercise yard. Was I a victim of rape. You want to know if you could take it if you had to. Well would you rather find out for yourself when I ever get the chance again. Well isn't that up to you old buddy. As the thank you as the junior member of the English department I'm still close to my undergraduate days and back then I had a hero. Yeah there Maggie my goodness. It was a chance thing. I read an article about Selma Alabama and Sam groper English prof was quoted near the end of it. Just one small quote he said and I remember it verbatim. He said Whitman and Sandburg would have led the column
the least I can do is march in the rear. Well you know what stuck with me. I an English major and it struck me that if ever I wanted to stick to my field ever I wanted to be of service to English literature. I better learn that equal with Chaucer was five b x. Later on if anyone's interested I'll perform 32 pushups. Dr. Sam Grover an uncompromising voice rising over the thunder of a national storm. There's little need to catalog his travels. It's all listed in Time magazine. Canadian edition Dartmouth Penn State Brandeis Yale MIT Berkeley. Some say he left a trail of violence in his wake. It's true that here and there students were galvanized into declaring their names openly and together. After listening to Dr. Grover it's also true that the sight and sound of 5000 students walking in a bunch so frighten the authorities that violence followed a lot of that to do with the ideas of Dr. Sam Gruber. Well finally as you all know he was
shot gunned down by the Mississippi National Guard. And inevitably he was jailed. I think that when Dr. groper announced that he was emigrating to Canada he sent shock waves through the American academic community. It was an announcement that implied I may be overdramatizing but I think time will prove me right. An announcement that implied an American Academy in exile as the first admirer of Dr. groper. And on behalf of the students the faculty the administration and the community in general whether his stay with us is brief or forever. Let me welcome to Canada and to our campus Dr. Sam groper. Thank you my new friend. Like all of you I am many things to the county hospital and that man is Mississippi. I'm an explanation with a gunshot wound to the McManus county jail. I mean it's gone. And of the energetic young man who was introduced me I appeared to be a hero. Well I'll
acknowledge the first two labels I am an expiation with a GSW and I'm also an ex-con. As for the third category I don't know. You know we all live with such an overlay of doubt about our actions that it is impossible to think of oneself as a hero. Certainly I do not. Neither would my valid if I had one not of my children. To them I'm simply a father to sell them a home in the eyes of many Americans. I'm a rash fool or a communist in the eyes of the Canadian authorities. I'm just another landed immigrant to this community I'm a new arrival on the list of the Welcome Wagon and of the students of English 411 before a 1 A and 421 B. I'm simply a professor who wants his essays in on time and who sets tough exams on memory. Thank you for having me. Thank you for welcoming me. May we become brothers and sisters in the days ahead.
Well has your back recently in the bank. If you'll excuse a political comment. And how does your garden grow Mistress Mary. My new garden is flat is the top of this table in this treeless is of Paul Bunyan had gone over it with a lawn mower. But last night I walked home at 2am hand-in-hand with my lover and a policeman said goodnight. I would say so my garden blooms full. There are plenty of American towns just as peaceful you know so it's really not the same here it's all fair weather there. It's the calm before the storm. Why any death already. We just got here. No but it's enough time for a few seeds to be planted.
I'm already SLAWSON. Well that's no I don't think so. And what else is it. What makes you think it's anything a mistress knows. Does she always got a paper so she can worry about her kids. Me all I got is you and sensitivity. I guess it's all a reaction to desertion or deceit. Maybe they're the same thing. Or just middle age. What the Jared syndrome. Do you know there are eight other Americans on staff and about 60 American students on campus Jamie told me maybe we should form a club or something. Maybe not. Look see. We're here and as far as we know it's forever. So let's settle down and go native. How different for a lousy How's your son now now. We'd better get hold of some bullets record and not take it easy. I've always subscribed to the old bridge theory that any native can understand English as long
as you speak it slowly and clearly. They tell me the French won't just stubborn when I come across the back with a riding crop that'll smart amount of sand that's corny. If you don't mind who the natives jokes al-Marri come on. Well I've never been a green one before. I don't know what to think. You're not a green horn. You're a landed immigrant with a yellow card to prove it. Yes I am not even a citizen. I can't even vote. I don't even know what what flag to salute say my home. I don't know what the hell's going over me. I never knew it was so goddamned patriotic. I guess it's just a moment everyone has to go through. What are you doing today. Today today I'm strolling along panty raid road to seek a hole we're in is contained a library. I understand they're looking for a librarian for the five hundred volumes. They just got in a new
shipment of National Geographic American there you know. Ah well be sure to cut out all those pictures of naked ladies. We don't want to corrupt the natives. Oh I will but I'll save them all in a plain brown envelope. Are you saying he was sure and she I'm sure really sure really sure do you. I'm ok now. I think everybody's here and out of the group maybe we could begin with somebody close the door and duck to grope for it. We've come to see you because we want your help. There's a situation developing on campus. Well as a matter of fact it's been developing for some time that we feel should be OK. Hold it for just a minute Warren with you I'd like to get a few things straight before I'm forced to make decisions. Yes. For the past few years I know many developing
situations which seem suddenly to crystallize when I arrive I get this straight I'm not a floating revolutionary looking for a mob to leave despite what you've read about me ok. We're not a mob Dr. Gronow I expect. The fact of my present to catalyze vague issues into revolutionary causes. In other words take no strike from my being here whatever issue you've got a better stand on its own two feet OK. Well yes of course. Now explain why a developing situation has suddenly reached a crisis point. Well we've just had a public announcement that confirmed a lot of big rumors. What's this the campus Weekly the memorial chemistry lab has been funded. The final money is arrived. Construction begins in a few weeks. So what the final money was contributed by Amor Kim. Now as you know they make everything from corn I thought the napalm with a whole range of household cleansers and industrial acids in between so what we don't like it. What don't you like American money.
We don't like their investment in our university especially in our chemistry lab. Yes and their money so well why should they give money to an obscure Canadian university. There are thousands of American colleges eager to accept their contribution I don't know. Maybe they're looking for tax deductions. Maybe it's just good public relations I don't know. And what's more neither the money and power are synonymous. If they put their money in a chemistry they'll want something in return. It's possible. Why not wait and see. It'll be too late then. Besides you can disguise research under a dozen different labels. It's American imperialism right. Dr Grover we want to hold up construction of the new lab until the money is returned and new money found tainted money. Yes we think there are other sources that won't tie us to the American military industrial complex. OK. I don't know if you have an issue or not in my personal opinion you're all disappointed that you don't have a drive to protest the Vietnam War issues and you're angry No sir that's not it at all it's that I was just an opinion. Personally I don't buy your issue. Not now and certainly not on your evidence. I think if you move now you'll all be
crucified in the press and ultimately you will end the rest of the student body. In other words you will shoot your bolt on a target you can't hit. You will be tried as radicals in search of chaos and discredited when a real issue comes along. We think this is a real issue. We think the student body is behind us really well let's roll it out and see how many are you. 15 20. We can't really count ourselves a number as we think we've got the support. How many are you with as a discipline body Amen. About a dozen about a dozen that represents an almost unmeasurable percentage of the university community. How many of that doesn't the staff just me. And what do you want of me. We want you to say whether you thought we had a cause worth fighting for. When I've said it now what do you think. I still think we have. How do you know. Simple morality. We simply have even if it's a lost cause worse you lose your credibility with the student but we don't care we object to our administration selling us out it's wrong is it. Of course it is. After all this is
our university. Ah now then as the question is it really yours. Yes it is. Well we'll see we'll see. Get a majority before you act advised Dr. Sam Grover ex-American campus activist now on staff at the English department. Small groups tend to overreact to make up for their weakness and their reaction to over action leads to violence. Dr Grover told a newly formed stop the chem lab Committee. Sam we never talked about this. I sort of took it for granted that you knew one. Well we expect you to stay out of trouble here. What trouble am I in send. Stay out of this stupid chem lab business and don't go near Warren. It's just a mixed up kid looking for X Jamie. It's OK to live up a middle but stop thinking like one. I didn't go to war and he came to me and I'm not involved in the cam lab affair. Some students asked me some honest questions I gave them honest answers. If anything I discourage them.
Not according to this. Never mind what the campus paper reported I'm telling you. Warren is called a campus wide meeting for next week all right what if he has. Don't panic. Jamie maybe nobody will turn out I mean nobody. You've been invited to speak. I have. That Warren is clever than I thought. You mean you know it's the invitation to for contacting an old tactic. Well that settles it. I'm not having a member of mice staff treat all JAMIE No that's a cheap way out and I won't let you use it. Well the moment it's between Warren and me if I need your paternalism I'll ask for it. OK OK if you want to operate independently then issue a statement and decline. But I do a lot of good on that platform by cooling it all down. That's contrary to reputation decline a lefty right. Take it easy old body. You look at your chemistry. Sam I fought hard to get you here. Now I'm telling you begun.
Yeah. Well someone's telling me but it sure as hell ain't you left to right lefty lefty. It wasn't your pitching arm either. It was a political tag. They pinned it on you when you led a march to the state capitol against high of fees. That was 25 years ago. I have new responsibilities now I'm president here and I'm telling you to decline. Lefty let me tell you why this is all wrong. Firstly I've got a reputation which means that no matter what I do everyone will take meaning from it. If I decline I don't think I've been intimidated. If I deny it I'm a lie and I make a mockery of my immigration stop complicating a simple issue. You're new here you're tired and you've got that whatever it is Jarrett syndrome. Yes but suppose for a moment I do go and speak and try to grab hold of the campaign and guide it endorse the objectives but reserve the tactics to myself. I
could with my experience. Or suppose I go stay out of it and just offer some advice. After all I do have a reputation now. Given those alternatives Mr Wright what do you think I should do. I told you what you should do. Now I'm begging God to end it big time. That you are on. I'm here in the living room. Opus if you want to see me I'm sorry you're not serious. It's my back most of their own and I guess today Sit down sit down. OK Warren and what are you. Marxist. I like as testy as I don't know what you've got this country or don't you believe in life with a lot of those things in Canada but not on this campus. I don't have a label. You're either experienced or you're being advised your tactics are too good for an amateur who's advising. I'm sorry about that
speaker but I didn't want to force you to come but it seemed like good advertising. Will you be there. And that's quote about reaction to overreaction leading to violence so I never told you that I got it from that old speech of yours. I don't like being manipulated why aren't you making an enemy out of me. I'm tough on either side of an issue you know I had to take the chance. I don't think you can ever be neutral in matters like this. Your reputation is too big. I figured you'd have to come down on our side sooner or later. Dr. group are you all right. Yes yes fine Warren. Don't worry about it. We are right you know Dr. Grover this AMA can business is just part of the takeover of our entire country by the states. We've got to fight it everywhere. Yes as I'm sure you think so. Well don't you. Look Juan I'm not feeling very well I'm sorry. Give me a day or so to figure this thing out. Can I Bill you as our main speaker than I'll be in touch with you know a few days just a few days. You look a lot better this morning.
How's your back. Not asking me just because you're oversexed or you could. Well in that regard I'm as good as ever. Good. Then I won't watch football practice this morning OK. And neither will I. I see by the city papers that Dr. sand groper might be addressing student militant like old times. He even got that old picture. You know the screaming one it but put it up. Never mind I know it by heart. Famed campus activists recently taken on staff at the university St.. They can be no revolution without mass support. Did you really say a silly thing like that. All I know is what I read in the papers concerning the new university chemistry laboratory student militants said they would pick at the start of construction and kill the university authorities returned a recently announced gift by Emma Kim. University president Dr. James Wright refused to disclose the amount of the gift but
said that such donations are quite normal I think I'm beginning to get a pumpkin sized headache. Have you got some. You can get your pill. OK let me get out of it was this. Now if you'll just hang on a moment I'll have this call traced. Thanks anyway for the advice. Is it all just an obscene phone call for me. I wish it was now for me. Well in that case you'd better take a double dose. You what did you say. I don't play she's alone. He called me a rotten commie yid. Well I don't think it's so raw. You're very kind. All right.
Would you go back go back to the state because of one lousy phone call. Part of that yes. See we worked this whole thing through before we came to Canada was to be a final protest. Our self-immolation are one big gesture. Well we made it. Going back cancels the whole thing. The students did ask me to speak at the meeting. So but Jamie Wright asked me not to. Well whatever you think it's your future I'd like to read the following message Dear Warren. I regret that my recent illness makes it impossible for me to attend this meeting. Yours truly. Dr. Sam Grover.
Dr Grover. Yes. I wonder if I could speak to you privately. Can't wait till I get back to my office I have a clue. Yes it could but it would be a great convenience to me if we could talk now just for a moment. If you don't mind. I'm constable Austin RCMP. Your credentials place. Oh yes of course. Everything in order Dr. Gruber. Right. Now what do you want to make. We understand Ted Copeland is coming up here. Ted Copeland Yes the student radical from California Yes I know who he is. See a friend of yours. We share the same platform we're not enemies. We understand he'll be staying with you when he's here. Oh so far no invitations. Wait a minute who told you that. Oh no one in particular it's just a rumor. Is it true. Dr Grover. What are you expecting and when are you expecting him. I didn't know he
was coming. Now that's all constable I have a class waiting and this will take a moment. Does he use drugs. Dr. Drew I don't know. Constable Now if you'll excuse me of course er sorry to trouble John at all. We appreciate your cooperation and I cooperate. Same Ted's Here he is. Where where is he. In the living room. Who invited him. He just walked in. What you talking about. Since when does Ted need an invitation. OK I may add that I have a drink. I'll think you go in and say I am so good to see outta jail. Have you been good said Good to see you again. Yeah what's the matter. Who brought you up here. Alan Warne he's been in touch with me for weeks. I thought you knew him as well he did mention something about it.
He sounds an experience they all are as much support. Not much any right wing on campus the frat boys. This place is just emerge from the panty raid. Well we all did once. Are you speaking at some rally or what your very uninformed I'm sure. I'm not really involved in this one. Yeah we're headed that way. But I told him it was just one of your tactics to ignore it. You did it. Well that explains a lot. When are you leaving leaving. I just got here I still want to know. I don't know when it's time to leave volleys. It's a lousy issue Ted. I don't think it'll stand up to maybe all issues look lousy at the beginning. Look Sam you know why I'm here. A bunch of kids are up tight about the institution they've suddenly discovered it's been bearing down on them all their lives and they want to change that's all you are you a double scotch and soda.
Oh by the way today I tossed a sleeping bag in the den you can bunk on the couch but clean up after yourself. Maybe you'd better bunk somewhere else to say I'm sorry. I decided to stay out of this one. Your presence here might be misunderstood his lack of presence here might be misunderstood by me. I'm sorry the RCMP talked to me today. Well nothing serious they want to know about it. What did you tell them nothing what kind of a crap question is that in light of your crappy hospitality. I think a pretty good one. I just wondered if he was staying here that's all. Well he is. I told him he wasn't where I would want to make a liar out of you Sam. Warren told me I could bunk in with him. Wait a minute you two. Since when do we knuckle under to this kind of two bit intimidation. Since Sam became a refugee. Get your stuff. All ready to drag you out of class and that I'd like you to hear this. I want your opinion. What happened
this is Les Moffatt. He's an executive assistant. You know that Warren's Committee meeting last night. I thought it was closed. Well it was hardly policed. Anybody could walk in and sit down and you did that with us. We're interested in all student activities. I see sort of like watching football practice or something like that. Only this time the quarterback was named Copeland of course the Mounties told us he'd be there. He's he's a very persuasive young man you know. There are about half a dozen holdouts but even they sell in line eventually and in the end they agreed unanimously to present only one demand and it has to be non-negotiable. Does that sound like the Copeland You know Dr. Robi. What was the my return the money to AMK of course are they cooked how much is three quarters of a million it's not very much. That's not the point. We're going we allow an infinitesimal percentage of our students to dictate the finances of the entire university. Would you allow the majority to dictate the
finances of the students got to do with financing anyway except pay their fees or protest them if they're too high. You do give them that right. Mr. Moffat I think that'll be all. Thank you for your report. I'll be in touch with you again if we need you. Yes Mr. Wright thank you just one day. OK Sam what are you getting at. I still don't know why you sent for me excavation begins in five days. If we don't return the money they'll pick up the site sell the students think the workers won't cross. They think they can hold up construction. What do you think. I've never known a hardhat who lose a day's pay over a phony student they could learn a lot about phoning the Union. Don't just be setting up a confrontation if anything your chances of avoiding violence are best of the workers don't anticipate the back violence. Oh come on Sam I know these students they wouldn't dare. If you ignore them don't have to do something to get your attention. All right what do you suggest. Well
how about giving back the money. Be serious and what if you did have a revolution on my hands as a symbol is it on the board of governors. You know how hard they work to assemble all that money. It took years. OK Jamie suppose we lay out the alternatives then the alternative is one we do nothing. We ignore the petition. We let them take it. We pray they'll disappear it could work. A mere handful of dirty long had pot smoking Afleet snobs you should excuse the imported expression are no match for a truckload of hard hats. They might just melt away at the sight of all that muscle but they won't really. Would you in fact did you. Not without a push poll turning to number two. We recognise their concern and praise them for their humanitarian instincts and try to explain to a public relations job on them. I mean explain the absurdity of their fears that's what I said public relations. Well I'm sure there
wasn't but then you have to listen to them where they buy our explanation would you. You know Sam you never did lose that old Jewish habit of yours I didn't. What habit is that answering a question with a question. Haven't I. OK we had enough of this tactical crap should we lay the real problem on the table. OK Sam you lay it out for me. The kids want power to determine the direction of this university which means for them own direction how much power are you prepared to give up. That's all we were discussing the chemistry law. Well I don't own any power splitting has I hold power true but only at the pleasure of others. Ok I'll rephrase the question. How much power do you think the other was up at that to give up. That's a stupid question especially from you it's a rhetorical question. Let's get back to basics good old basics. Nobody relinquishes power without being forced to. Conversely nobody gains power without fighting for it. In other
words Mr President if you're sure they'll win and start negotiating. If you're sure you'll win. Hold fast. Do nothing. If you're in doubt fight it out. But what do they want with power. How could they use it. What do they know about running a university organizing in a border area hiring professors community relations. There are a bunch of kids and educated irresponsible kids. Goddammit Sam we never wanted power. We never attacked insecurity and we never got those fees lowered either and was nobody was afraid to make you president of the institution when the smoke cleared. That's cheap Sam I'm surprised at you. After all you are sitting here right beside me. When the demands come I'll invite Warren and his committee in for a discussion with me and my committee. All right and I appoint you my committee he said. CHENEY You way.
Has the right doctor Grover. We're here to present our demands I want a warrant take it easy just relax this is just an informal get together to talk over a relatively minor campus matter there's no reason to shout. We think otherwise. Our concern is for the Academic freedom of the sooner I'll know just a minute. We feel that the contribution of Amor Cam will necessarily restrict that freedom and therefore we demand that the university return the contribution immediately even if it means a delay in the construction of a new chemistry lab. Have you any idea who contributes to this university that's beside the point around Asians Legacy's bequests corporations individuals Len owning stocks bonds and three levels of government plus student fees. Has any of it ever ever restricted your academic freedom. We are into a different era. The university is one of the major sources of scientific research. We're opposed to having that research exploited by industry for its profits by politicians for their power by the military for killing people.
Our chemistry lab our little chemistry lab here on this campus is going to do all that just because gave us three quarters of a million I don't know how much they donated but yes right here on campus. You don't have much respect for his warren if you think we'd sell out for so paltry as some. We think you have no choice. Money is a commodity. A mechanic doesn't give it away for nothing. They'll expect something in return. Sure a tax deduction that a public image no standing in the academic community and attractive to the graduates will come out of this very lab and work for them. As a matter of fact three quarters of a million is a blog and I think we should hit them for a million and a half dollars. We want no part in building either the image or the profits of that American corporate giant who want a chemistry lab course but not that way. There's no other way at this time and we're prepared to wait. How many students and faculty do you represent think we have the support of most students and some faculty. Well one less of the faculty than we thought in a possible war on that you don't know how to count Streit but that's beside the point. How many
in numbers as a percentage how many. The rightness of our demands is not affected by numbers. We demand that the AMA can money be returned but numbers will affect the success of your demands. And what's right does without success. An academic exercise. We think we'll succeed. Your demands are impossible they're non-negotiable and they're not demands. They're an ultimatum. You've taken it on yourselves to dictate financial policy to this university. You obviously represent practically nobody. It's hardly a Democratic approach. A university is not a democratic institution. Our demands are non-negotiable. Suppose we begin by negotiating the idea of non-negotiable Lety. Who knows why only you may even convince us our demands are non-negotiable. You want that picket line very much don't you lar and we want our cam out of our camp Yes but you want that picket line very much as a matter of fact you're about six years behind your American cousins and you're embarrassed and Barris by the fact that you've never held a protest sign never had a taste of tear gas never got a club on your noggin never
went to jail I never got your picture in the paper and so you rode in on a handy issue in order to collect a chest full of medals. Well that's your personal problem and it can easily be solved by any shrink. What's wrong with that however is not that you want the experience but that you're exploiting other sincere students to get it. In the old days Warren you would be cold and provocateur a commie agitator. Your new label at least according to President Nixon is campus bum. Personally I prefer the old French phrase excavation begins in two days. If our demands are not met we'll pick at the site so you'll. Yes I'm not talking to you. What about the rest of you. Right wing right. You must know Warren and what you're asking is impossible. Think it over all of you. We appreciate your concern. That's not just a phrase I mean it in a sense I feel rather proud that our students are sensitive to these matters. We are not failing in our task.
Let me assure you that all your fears are absolutely groundless. I hope you will reconsider your action. Thank you all for coming. Sam it's Jamie. Yes Jamie. You know today's the day. Yes I know the tickets are already out. Yes. Drop by my office on your way to classes morning class this morning. And why not. I'm sick that's all. I'll be all right tomorrow. Seems the tickets have been out since seven I'm not surprised at the hot has come yet. No they're not due for an hour or so how's the student body reacting to tell you the truth I think they're ignoring them. They seem embarrassed by the whole thing. Picket snow kept it quiet. I'm beginning to think we all took it too seriously. I suspect it might just fade away. It's possible Bush and the RCMP dropped around. What did they want. Just making inquiries about you and this Copeland chap. Don't worry I gave them all the
right answers. Seems they plan to depart Copeland if any trouble start trouble expect trouble. I thought you said I don't expect standing by just in case everything's under control take care of yourself. Drop by my office when you're better OK. Well what do you want to see me about. Oh nothing special. It'll keep you take care. Mary I got you. OK OK. You sound kind of breathless. What's up. I asked Ted to drop in before you leave. Is it going so soon. Andras course he's being deported right. But the Canadian police are very gentle. They're going to stop by here on their way to the border. He isn't hurt is he. Oh no the Canadian police are very gentle but firm. Anyway Ted was expecting it so there was no resistance. You mean hoping for
it. Probably yeah the whole thing was a hopeless gesture from the beginning. All he could get out of it was an incident that would radicalize the campus. You know one awful lot of details for a campus librarian I was on the picket line. Why. I didn't know that. I didn't think I needed your permission. You don't. But we usually talk things over. It was a last minute decision. I looked out of the window and I saw a dozen scared kids blushing with embarrassment. My heart went out to them that's all. So I decided to make it 13. The police were there only three of them. One would have been enough. The hard heads came the pickets trembled. Ted tried to work them up to hold their places the cops grabbed him and it was all over. Cops Yep. Three polite handsome young men who called me. Me and Warren. He froze. He was scared. One cop talked to him quietly moved. That's all there was to it. And you me.
I hurled rocks traded obscenities with the hardhats and kneed president Jamie in the growing. All right he's got four kids. That's enough for anyone. Never attack a man in this pleasure. You make an enemy of him for life who's very chilling too if you'll pardon the pun. You know her as one. I've come to say goodbye. Well one for sure. I don't know about too. Are you okay Ted are you kidding me. A veteran of the battle of Berkeley these pigs around matters. I was one fine Mary said he was terrified. Everybody feels as parents the first time they'll be OK. You mean the next time well be a next time. Sam I don't trust you anymore. I'm sorry Ted. Do you forgive me. No not until I understand sorry. Me too. Do me a favor will you
possibly shut up about this when you get back home for a couple of months and then then if nothing's changed don't shut up about it. Meantime tell them I'm trying to work something out. OK well for old time's sake. OK Sam Well the giant arms are waiting by Sam to take care of your back I will. And good bye dear sweet lovely Mary. We all miss you very much. Sure if you get a chance run your hands through Sam's guts and try to straighten them out. I will will. What is the matter with him. Who did you see this. No what is it to believe as you think and as we do look at it. Cops on campus disperse peaceful anti chem lab tickets one of rest is who the hell is the editor anyway. Let's hope that with him cops on campus they were there to protect the students from the dead. Did I need protecting your god damn right they did with all this
publicity that was bound to be violent. Did you call the cops Jamie called me they said the heart ads were angry they were afraid there'd be a fight. There is permission to police the site. Then the Mounties came and said the same thing. Besides Moffat said is coping and was working everybody up it looked like trouble. I was determined to prevent it and I did. And what are you so upset about. Have to issue a statement. What will you say that you prevented violence by using the police and event is just as well. How about the old war on or a bit in the first part and then you can get into the outside agitators in the next part and say something about the minorities subverting the will of the majority and finish off the line on democracy and God saved. OK wiseguy you write it. I didn't call the cops you did I didn't even advise you to call me lousy cops three. Why not apologize and promise never to do it again you serious. Yes verity you intimidated a dozen students who were trying to protest an action they
thought wrong and therefore by implication you intimidated everyone on campus who doesn't agree with you. Now that's not what you meant to do so you'd better apologize. I did what I thought was best for the university. I protected its property and its students. I've nothing to apologize for I'm off of Jamie. I could not let those kids get hurt. She was always so clear on the other side of the issue so easy. Maybe that's why you stay there was alone. I never thought of it that way. What would you have done Sam in my place. I would have held up construction when the pic showed up I would have given those kids some dignity by acknowledging their concern. And I certainly would not have called the cops. I did what the Board expected me to do and alienated the student and I gave it in to them I would have alienated the board. Seems like you're the ham in the sandwich Jamie. And yes it does. Sam I got a proposition for you.
I was going to bring it up the other day when you were here. By the way how's your back. I assume that's what was bothering you. Very good healing rapidly as a matter of fact. This will seem sudden but it's the product of a lot of thought. I'm going to nominate you for Dean. Why. Listen Jamie I'm new here the site I know what I'm doing Sam. I said I've been thinking it over. I'll take my chances with it actually. What do you say. I say I'm flattered but why so sudden. We're stepping into a new era and you're familiar with it. We need you when you think it over I gonna ignore the board meets in a week. I'd like you to be there with me. OK I'll let you know. And one more thing I'd like you to draft a statement for me to the student body something to the effect that the presence of the police on campus as a result of administrative error construction of the new chem lab will continue but the Amica money will be set aside in a special fund. And the president of the University invites the entire student body to
debate the disposition of that fund. Can you do that for me Sam. My my Jamie when it comes to making a defeat look like victory. You're a very clever man. You know one of the major presidents I did lose didn't I Sam. Your kids now have power. They have you a vision. And no blue chip stalks to protect. That's a lot of heavy auto real money. Mistress Mary quite contrary How does your garden grow. Do you know you're a male chauvinist. Me never will cut out this mistress crap. Since when have you become a feminist. I nobody's mistress but my home our sex life is as much my choosing as yours but it's only a word so as make it as they say in the Westerns. I think you got me right through the heart. Good now I'll nurse you back to health. What would you like your forgiveness.
Ok ok I'm sorry it's just that lately you're not the same man I shacked up. It feels kind of adulterous I'm still me. I've just been working something out that's all. But you've been saying that for weeks. When is this project going to end I don't know. It could end in 10 then OK I'll clock it. Mary do you think we always pick the easy side of an issue the easy thing. That's a queer sort but if you face the National Guard with a cannon sometimes it is easier to be armed. It's also more painful. Get me a drink with you. Well let's help a double martini Holder the most and know all of it. Their turf wars. That's why I need that drink. Who can see what happened.
Jamie's offered me the deanery. Really. Oh yeah that's marvelous. You mean a farden genuine All is ready to take it to the board. Wow well that was two months on campus and already these are fast moving times so that I don't go with it. So those are the new they didn't grow. Maybe we'd better get married. You get a lifetime supply of headache pills a free postal and a hotline to the police station. You Drink hearty cheers to chin chin and all that kind of rot. Oh man is that all. No it's only the first paragraph. You think if you take it you'll be selling out. Thank you I have been all along in bits and pieces like a refugee selling
his jewels. But you're not a refugee remember you're a landed immigrant with a yellow card to prove it. I thought I would get them out of hock when I got right again. You're not being fair to yourself since you've been you. But now they want the whole bagful in exchange for a house status and some blue chip stocks. So what you've always said there's nothing too good for the working class. But I was just about ready to buy it all back. There's nothing ruling with wealth. Ask any poor man anyway. Mary do you know what a screw is. I beg your pardon said a screw is a God in prison. That kind. In the McManus County Jail the school was named Elden Eustace.
Yes the Jarrett syndrome. Yes No wonder none of the medical dictionaries have Jarrad was in charge of our barrack. It was like the Army about 35 of us in one huge room. Every morning we made our beds and stood in front of them for inspection every morning at the screw found some reason to make me turn around. Then he would jab the butt of his club into the small of my back. Oh God. I didn't know bros never had a chance to heal. After a few weeks I couldn't stand up straight which annoyed Jarrett's the screw no and so he began jabbing me in the gut as well. 6:30 a.m. in the back 7 a.m. about an Augusta didn't gather is minding your own business is the best road to ride in those county jails. Most of the inmates knew that I couldn't complain the warden was too busy with his girlfriend and my congressman was too busy defending the Vietnam War. Anyway after a few months it became a kind of personal
challenge to see how long I could take it. I even began to look forward to it until one day I turn around smiled and Jarrett's face and said Thank you. I didn't understand Didn't you never spoke. Jack it doesn't matter it's all past but it has got to be a better answer to sadism than those as I suppose now there is but it was all I could think of then. Besides I think the other inmates were rooting for me. They never said anything but they never picked on me either and they all knew they could if they wanted to and get away with it. But they never did nothing. I took it for six months and then it was over and I felt victorious there I was a free man with a bruised back and there was a screw sentence to that son of a bitch of a jail for the rest of his life. I even felt sorry for him and I
told him so what he said. He said I was crazy. He had a good civil service job a nice house and a good pension and all I had was a broken back and a criminal record. But why didn't you tell me. The pain was such a personal thing. I wanted to hang onto it. I guess I was afraid you'd take it away or something. I know it sounds neurotic but it was a personal thing. Me and Jarrod and the pain. But why tell me not because now it's all gone. I can stand up straight again. I know it's a corny symbol but it's true I can stand up straight too. Is that why we came here. So is that why Jarrett the screw. Yes same and I think so Mary forgive me but now that the pain is gone I think so. I thought I couldn't live in a country that rewarded the
sadist and punished the innocent until the pain went. And Jamie offered me a safe job a nice house and a good pension. They're not quite the same. No of course not. It's much gentler here and the cops call you my man. He's a good country so for some for us we have a right to enjoy it we're not bad people he's not ours Mary will make it but that's not the point. Then I can walk down the street alone at 2:00 in the morning I haven't done that since I was a young girl. I can't let Jarrett the school kick me out of my own country I can't come to another country and do what I wouldn't do at home just to get away from just smell sweet the lakes the clean the land is empty and full of the promise of spending back home the world is red hot and full of jails and Jared's and kids lying dead on the can I'm sorry Mary I can't buy Jared when I simply can't. He hasn't won anything. He's still in jail and. And you're free. He's What's that. Where did you go to my yellow car. I
don't see it that way. My landed immigrant status card my passport to Canada and the local deanery a nice house and 2 AM walks in the park at the screw said to me. It's beautiful back home thousands of kids get thousands of cards from thousands of Jarrett's when they get them. They burn them. For God's sake what do you do when I'm just sending an old fashion message to Jarett it reads there Gerrit. Hell no I won't go. So you say you don't. He said Im a bad mate of mine dear bedmate I'm going home. I coming. I'm sorry I never knew Jerry. I know We's they
say and we're good people. We deserved this place. Look Mary I tell you what next July we'll come up here in my caddy convertible complete with cigar and we'll both take off for a week of skiing. How's that. Yeah ok I'm tacky tacky. That was the Jarrett syndrome by Mort for a starring George Roberts and the Sam Grover and featuring Vivian Reese James Edmund as president right.
