In nineteen forty six barrier Sun saying the artists here. Started a little summer art session and I was one of the lucky few that got into that. And. I remember doing with the standard drawings in the sun saying would come through once in a while. And the painting that I was doing was of a donkey. And he looked at it and he said more pain and that was basically his his idea was to put more paint on anything you're painting. Well that's certainly very apropos given the surface of this painting. And saying as I'm sure you know was born in Sweden and moved to. Lynchburg Kansas in 1894. To teach at Bethany College. And like other artists in the region like Thomas Hart Benton and groundwood Midwestern artist he was away. More avant garde. Movements like cubism or Futurism and modern trends like abstraction. But he really preferred. To paint a realistic view of the American landscape because he felt that that's what people
could really relate to. Right. And he had a unique style of painting. Where he built up the paint surface. With the really. Short. Brush strokes. And. Left a very thick layer of impostor over the entire surface. After he visited Colorado for the first time in 19 08. He brightened up his collars and his whole palette became lighter and brighter. And this is actually a Colorado word. Yes. It's signed and dated 1937 in the lower right and it's also signed and titled On the reverse. Mountain stream Big Thompson Canyon s just park. Right here and my parents are both part of Bethany College. And. The. Thing was that he would. Paint a lot of pictures like this and my folks had no money whatsoever. But. Because of friendships and things something like this he would sell them
for 20 25 dollars max. And sometimes they were just given I know my older brother at one point said. Wow what a beautiful painting in the studio. And he said Oh you want this painting. And so he got it. So it's a gimmick here we're out there. Yes. Well this market wasn't really didn't really take off until the 80s and 90s he was really pretty much on recognizing the American marketplace. And because. Of his unusual technique of painting. He would sort of nickname the American Vango but the artist always disclaimed any great influence Vango. I think at auction this might bring as much as 30 to $50000 and folks. Who. Know of it. I was thinking in the hundreds maybe thousands and no. You see we have about six of these.
