Description
Episode Description
This study of stock market investments focuses on the activities of a single broker, Robert Laffan of Merrill Lynch Pierce Fenner & Smith, Inc., New York. Laffan is seen as he addresses an investment club, attempts to sign up a large mutual fund order, and meets with a small investor. These scenes dramatize the economic pressure placed on the broker, whose business virtually requires him to favor the large investor at the expense of the small customer. The episode also visits the floor of the New York Stock Exchange and discusses investment with several of its 1,300 members, whose seats are now worth approximately half a million dollars apiece. Among those appearing in this episode are Edward Johnson, a Boston-based magnate in the mutual fund business; Daniel J. Bernstein and Graham Loving, member of the New York Stock Exchange and top executives in their own investment firms; Leo Calarco, a Greenwich Village lawyer who recounts his own hazardous experiences with a stock broker; Robert J. Denison, a partner in First Security Co.; and Albert Foster Thalheimer, account executive for Merrill Lynch. "Your Dollar's Worth - Stocks and Bonds" is a National Educational Television production.
