Difference and reach out to the neighborhoods we serve and by the members of the Tribune-Review to
rediscover park experience the history. Chris Moore I'm Carol ESD and welcome to On cue. Coming up it's time to get you
reacquainted with Pittsburgh part. And tonight we'll take you on a tour of two of them rich in history and recreation. You may not realize how much family and Holland parks have to offer. But first it's time for the main event to fear some force and then get right to the introduction starting in the guest chair. You've read his columns in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and now you can experience his wit and wisdom on live television Erica put the pressure on him. Eric Heil is here tonight and a lot of our guests are from the print media Eric and I just wonder where you get your news from print or TV. I steal from wherever I can. Oh there you go. Oh moving on down the line I care a columnist for the Post-Gazette North Ruthann printer TV which well-known Eric's giving away all our secrets that you know every every source is legitimate and has something to say to us. Isn't that high minded a little bit of a COX 1 0 5 9 the eggs do you think radio news is becoming less and less the news outlet of
choice and you know I guess I just got my hair cut and they told me Look they're right but I look like an Elkhound so Elkhound Yeah I did. Aqua line features I don't know what did you ask me what do I like what radio news you think never get I don't do it what I'm talking about you know we don't do radio news I mean although I will have a new column showing up in Gogol magazine but other than that you know I don't know what do I do for news I listen to Pittsburgh's news authority whatever yeah I turn I click over to you and I respond those teenagers and these DNC Fred you work actively on the radio and TV your thoughts. Radio news source I mean that's the first place people turn that we actually compliment everyone else they hear it first on the radio and they want to see the pictures on TV and then if you're really a news junkie you read all about it in the newspaper that's really the way it kind of rolls I just have very Ouray turned to the newspapers. Yeah that's pretty much a borderline a bird we don't respect I have read some of your columns but you know
what and I read your heart you don't really know if you are in your house and the family isn't where you are really I mean I you know if I'm in my car and I do wake up the radio goes I watch the TV on cardio it's the radio. Well now that we've set a timer in a matter of debate let's turn to the subject at hand. From Vermont We'll start with you Erica Senator Jeffords has gone independent. Will this affect the Bush agenda and trying to get across might make it a little more difficult. Yes Democrats getting that kooky majority now and Jeffords becoming an independent voting along with the Democrats in terms of organizational purposes. Might make it a little more challenging for the Republicans and Bush to push that agenda through. There's been much talk about big snow Mr Bush do you think that that was part of it or that he was just naturally a Democrat all along and Republican his voting record was a tad on the moderate to liberal side and didn't always side with with
Republican interests so I don't know that there was any one thing that pushed him over the edge I don't know if the press was invited to a cocktail party at the White House or something along those lines I think he was probably leaning that way for some time. Alan what do you think. There is no well you know to me it just goes to kind of the sensibilities of where voters heads really are when they say that they want their politicians a certain way because here's a guy who I was watching CNN they showed all these people at the Vermont airport with these signs. People who voted for him as a Republican you soccer whatever we don't want you here anymore I'm thinking you know what all the. We get screwed so often by politicians and their various peccadilloes here's a guy and you know we stick with them and here's a guy who who said I cannot in good conscience kind of continue down this road in the Bush administration and he flip sides and I think that's you know to be commended and the people are chastising this guy I mean granted if you vote for a guy one party you want to be relatively certain that you he's going to stay in there but here's a guy who said look I can't do this. I'm going to switch on working.
We decided that after the Republicans had agreed with him that they wouldn't run a conservative against him thereby costing the Republicans a seat with either guy. They did that for him in the primary. Let him run unopposed then he discovers his conscience that he discovers that he's not for you know my time is going to be a numbers game you could go all the way out to a Washington where Nader takes claim for the defeat of the interim senator there were the I can't remember the name but the lady defeated that introns senator out there. So if it's just a number one it's not a number scale. It's not a numbers game and I just I take exception to and about this I know the thing I'm angry about. Yes I'm irritated because now we go. Pat Leahy on the Judiciary Committee instead of Orrin Hatch and we've got to listen to. Well done the walk. Ted Kennedy for what. What's the Duponts the Democrats are going to play the same game the Republicans played like that or is ahead and Senator Santorum played with Mr. Clinton about judicial activism and they
didn't want these Clinton activists there and now the shoe's on the other foot put it all yes it is and that's politics that's fine. What irritates me about the situation is saying this is a man of integrity and principle when he waited till he had the office in a box in the slightest I mean in their integrity and principle to you. Of course there are. OK I just want to. Fred I heard you then. Earlier this wasn't always you said what. Don't fret either if you're reading this I mean you're just off the people in Vermont we're all kind of kooky and kind of wild a lot of this sort of stuff I mean and they like this guy he's done this is to his advantage. I think staying a Republican was to his disadvantage and perhaps this is gotten him publicity he hadn't had before. Nobody knew who this clown was. I think there are several advantages that the Bush administration has I mean look at Ronald Reagan. Look what he got done with a Democratic Congress. Look at Bill Clinton got done with a Republican Congress. Are we saying that George Bush can't get something done because the sentence in the well and yes actually Erica 12 senators voted for the tax bills that were democratic right
so does it matter so that helped and that hello because everyone when he said he wants to be bipartisan this is going to help him get by party he's going to have to woo some Democrats over he's going to have to do with the Gipper did. And he can do it and this is also going to teach the Republican Party a lesson because there are too many Republicans in there. If you're not a staunch conservative then you need to get out you know what you need to embrace the moderates the moderates or what both sides of the road will want to shop who need moderates and if you don't embrace moderates you're going to lose I think again that I would take exception to and this is isn't that what George Bush has said he's been about from the beginning so people are saying oh this is proof that he's not able to embrace the moderates. When are they going to give the guy a break. This guy's a Bartley's guys did I selfishly did it for his own reasons he was never my he was always a Democrat you know that is. Can't tell that from the press coverage and that's what's so fascinating to me about it again as they go I guess you're guys you think the press is vulgarly. No I'm I'm not I'm reading the coverage of Jeffords the analysis articles that were in the last couple days where the man arrives quietly at the hotel he didn't seek the
spotlight that should have been his at this moment is such a man of principle even in through the back door there is no front friend because a this resolution all of this was a look at Mr. Bush and his responsibility before this. Should he have done something when it's 50/50 what it is that we yes should have done something as Fred said to embrace everyone to keep everybody within the party. Yes he sure does. My point is I think he's done an awful lot too and any time that he fails or that he's perceived to fail or the oppositional press can accuse them of failure they're going to do so. And this week's story is just another example because they have sucked up more to it because they're going to be terrible there that's all there is you know let's make sure I mean I know you guys are going to be pissed because now you don't have control of the situation anymore so I want to know every minute of the weekend or you know we have sometimes seen a different word because you know I don't think that you know anybody and I you know when every one now every nightly news broadcast when they're selling advertising sponsorship for the George W. Bush foible of the day. This guy clearly is not kind of you know
the only thing this guy has embraced. Oil tobacco is not true. That's guys gone they want to man and it's not it's incident down to happen. I mean what's to stop somebody from going to the other things I want to argue with you because they're not really are not representing Democrats who are not as good as you now represent any one of them I want to have one representing his consent to say yes I say he is he's not representing himself and his conscience I mean you to love this guy but isn't that what people say they want from their politicians. Everybody talks this talk about how we want to talk ready I'm ready man of the people we want somebody and then a guy who does all this mean everybody in shadowed I love guys that do this they're wacko up their mind. Right now you're just mad about gay marriage up there. Let's let's focus on Pennsylvania for why do you think that this will have anything that any effect on Pennsylvania. We've got two Republican senators Chairman of Committees. What's going to happen as far as Pennsylvania politics we
talk about the light rail that Baltimore is battling full of it not it's not like maglev saving maglev thank you maglev that might have had some sort of effect in terms of dollars jobs. Anything no matter which you think of maglev when you have Democratic leadership at this point who are going to attempt to be working now with and with a state that has two Republican senators and a Republican governor I mean so obviously I think Pennsylvania probably will drop on the priority list as a result of this move where that's they can raise taxes. So so for. Will it mean something particular for the commonweal but I never knew that we had a Republican governor for now I don't think that's going to hold up very long. The next election I think even you know we got the KC clone and we've got rain down there will be coming and resent Jeffords said he told President Bush in a meeting the other day that he believes he's got to be Bush will be a one term president. Think he's off base I don't think he's off best Thanks awfully cheeky to say that Cheney again was a one term president wasn't.
Can you spell rude. Yeah well you know what is it rude to speak to the president frankly when isn't it important for if you're part of the lower majority or disloyal minority whichever one is speaking. Thank you to someone. Yes it depends entirely on how it was said Bill Hemmer Moni. Yeah I thought it was a bit of a breach of protocol as to as to what his credibility has already broke on how well you know if he said George I'm really worried Mr. President I'm really worried that if you continue on the path that you're on that you'll only serve one term and I don't want to see that happen this is all about for him all about him upping his profile in Vermont upping his national profile getting more hard and getting more you run for governor more power. That's what all of these guys who are absolutely Republicans never grabbed in the red and he doesn't matter she's for sale but that's all plus some are pretending that he did this out of this incredibly enlightened conscience and it's just more politics.
Yeah but is it politics this was the stuff you give was I guess is it politics to save money on this Memorial Day on the flags that we're putting on the graves of veterans who have served this country so honorably. We talk about saving $20000 these are the same flags they use that Arlington Cemetery and other places around the nation Eric should veterans be upset if this new money saving procedure we have you know they shouldn't be upset at all because they are upset they are upset. But I don't think they really have a right to be because the the money that's being saved is being pushed back into county veterans programs that assist. Veterans families this is like a man thing you know you want to bigger better in America we want everyone to V8 engine we want a large economy savages go through this kind of you know sere and I'm not and not so not to dismiss veterans at all because obviously I can't speak from their perspective but this country has a huge flag fetish that we need to get over we need to get over this whole freaking out about the we do not no no no no flag pole in my back and I'm going to like
that land is a what matter with you. Why old wooden Oreos. We got a serious problem though with people who are freaking out over flag burning is it big or is it smaller people saying these men died for this why didn't die for the flag they died for the idea behind it including the idea that you could run the flag only but that's the symbol that it represents. You're right it's the idea behind it but symbols are important but I know there's some debate over the same fervor in play I get there's no useful symbols or for the simple minded Chris and I think it's a bad idea here you know I'm sure they were about to say well you know essentially you can talk about symbolism all that you'd like but the money here that is being saved is being a pumped into programs for the living and I guarantee you that you're not going to hear any dead veterans subject to the size of the flood wall that's now was there or may I know that. It's a Saturday Louis's in the morning on the living not the dead I was dead or not being forgotten. She's there getting a flag just because I do. Wouldn't you rather have the money being spent on those who served our country and are still alive yes and probably struggling right now.
They worry about the memory of man which still matters still do remember that depended on the size of the flag up there on the set I had on. I'm thanking the veterans point of view here that I have read about in the paper why they're upset. These are men who take very strong women the fact with a slight of let's do this right in time there was one official protest by a VFW troop and when they found out that the money was being saved in going to help the living veterans they withdrew that protest there was one protest. What's the problem whatever they want to shrink the Salvation Army flag How do you guys feel about that flag it's a flag. OK. When I say the Internet assessments that are out there someone I and I'm not saying that we should take the names off and the pictures off and all this other stuff doesn't really matter Frey is now public record you know it's interesting that it was public record. It's got to be available to the public you can get it at the county office building. You can also find out where people live in the municipal buildings yesterday the home bases of just a valid or just because now
technology makes it easier to access public records. There is one compromise though I could see in here and I don't think I've heard anybody talk about all we hear about is remove it and then Vince Gaston say well maybe we could have exemptions for some people. Why don't we just leave it on there. You can still see one exempted people like judges police officers probably radio and TV stars doesn't matter to me I'm someone that I'd better you know reveal as you can say yeah well why don't they just leave the names on but you can't search by name you can search by I mean if you want to do I mean to do so make it happen. It's not harder. You go in there and you go in I have a need to address because you know what I actually have to go to when you get there you can find out who it is it's not easy. So the public record is still there. It's still easy to find out what you need to find out. I think that's an acceptable compromise although I really don't have a problem with it the way it is right now. You have one. Yeah I do like that you know if it's for anybody it's invasion of your privacy like you know it's like if I want to have an unlisted phone number I don't want to be in the book.
Anybody else got to homeowners OK. I prefer not to have my name right out there with my address or being a public figure with with a wife and child. There are certain privacy aspects here but I also have to balance that too with the convenience of getting a readily accessible public information about you know this is now an easy one to have said Oh yes I mean not out of the question I would move there. OK the last last subject last woman in Chicago doing a lot of shops and shopping grab by going to make this a woman question. I'm just it's a great sharply. She was shoplifting and it just bought the lawyers excuse that she was a shopaholic wasn't nothing it was repaid a hundred seventy five thousand. I was like you found me it's retail therapy everyone no matter for crying out Oh our group there was it's do you get me out of you and that as much as I'd like to be able to say I feel her pain. I don't need to get a grip. The Judds really needs to get a grip that's insulting.
It's insult when did all these hideous higher gender not one of these judges start handing down all these like capricious verdicts you got judge judges sentencing kids who stole from their parents to walk in the street in their underwear in it because all these judges they see all the judge shows that are already on TV and they have one of TV's You know they're going to do anything to get their highlight reel to go oh OK well thank you all for being here and we appreciate your contribution to our fearsome force of the Bank thank you again. Feel good to get a hat. Still to come A beautiful to live up to parks hats and shoes sorry and for many of you they're practically in your own backyard you know to pick of the guys that went right over here then pick that up right along with the first look ahead to Monday on Monday. Special Memorial Day edition of On cue. It's one half hour dedicated to our better. So we'll talk with people who served in World War 2 the Korean War and Vietnam. These are the stories from nurses female Marines soldiers and the prisoner of
war. You'll hear about their experiences and how it felt to serve their country in times of conflict to Yama the stress the sadness and sometimes humor. Monday a Morial day on cue. You live in or near the city of Pittsburgh while you've been reassessed but you don't have to go far to experience nature recreation and beautiful scenery this summer. You can gather the family and head out to one of Pittsburgh parks. There's really something for everyone and it won't cost you a bet. And as a part of a special series on cue we're going to visit four Pittsburgh parks and tonight we're headed to Shanley and Highland Park. I'm a Cheever I'm the president of the Pittsburgh parks Conservancy. We're in the Oakland Pittsburgh Oakland section of Pittsburgh Schenley Park which is really the flagship part of the city the transportation to get Stanley
Park is pretty easy. Oakland is at the center of a lot of bus connections. Today shortly parts about four hundred fifty six acres conservatory you might say is the crown jewel and Schenley park. It's a very interesting place. The slogan is there's always something. And I think that's true. I think it's a great place to start your tour of the park and then it's important to go and visit some of the other places and gently park to Flagstaff Hill which is across the street from Phipps conservatory is really the closest thing we have to get sport to a beach although it doesn't have the ocean. Shelly Park has an 18 hole golf course
at the show. There's a lot of active recreation and sports facilities. In Shelley park Anderson the playground has been completely redone. I think it opened about yourself go down to it's been a great success. The city of Pittsburgh said about maybe four years ago to make sure that all the playgrounds in the city of Pittsburgh were up to todays safety standards for the kids of Pittsburgh. There are some wonderful playgrounds in each of these parks on any given day. You'll see people just walking and enjoying the fresh air in the sunshine and you'll see people sitting outside talking with their friends having a picnic. You'll see runners in the park you'll see bikers you'll see birdwatchers.
That's what makes these parks so special is that they really offer a range of activities to the people who want to use them. I think Shelly Park is a wonderful resource to have right in the middle of a bustling city. And about two minutes you can go from the edge of the park down into Panther hollow. A lot of people say that Chadli park is really essential to their spiritual well-being. It just gives them a sense of refreshment that they can't get out of on the pavement of the city. Highland Park is in the neighborhood of Highland Park so the Highland Park refers to both the section of town and also the park itself. Edward Bigelow designed Highland Park over 100 years ago around the reservoir which is a working part of the water system for the city of Pittsburgh.
Every day you go there you'll see people enjoying themselves getting their fitness walk or just walking with friends. It's really quite a gathering place for the community. I'm in Highland Park right down at Lake Carnegie which is a wonderful place to be like Carnegie is beautiful as it is you can see there are docks and Canada geese and nice water flowering trees. A lot of people like to come here and bitch. Highland Park has a super playground that the community built some years ago and it's a place where a lot of kids like to go and play it's a big wooden structure pad has some towers and turrets and people have a lot of fun there. And my lord. Swim in the pool. There are also some tennis that are good to
use. Highland Park is about 400 acres including the zoo zoo has been a part of the park since the very early days although it's certainly grown a lot since then. Our project in Highland Park our showcase project is to try to restore the entry garden to the park. There is a reflecting pool and fountain that used to be there and only the edging is there now there's no water in the pool and there's no fountain so we hope to bring that back. Highland Park is a great place to visit to start and then finish by having a picnic at one of the picnic shelters a swimming pool or a look at the lake or a walk around the reservoir or jump around the super playground. Then you can go down to Washington to learn and zoom around the bike track and throw your Frisbee in the field. It's really a fun place to be. Look forward to seeing you at the park really soon
and play golf. I don't know that Phipps was actually part of Shanley park. That's a part of the park. If you had watched you would have a word. Oh and for more information about Pittsburgh parks visit the conservancy on the web at Pittsburgh dot org and be sure to catch a visit to frick at Riverview Park say that real fast on Tuesday June 5th. And now here is tonight's BNC past media calendar. And that's all we have time for tonight but be sure to tune in Monday night at 7:30 for a special
Memorial Day presentation of Montreux featuring local veterans and big flags are going to France. And in the meantime have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend good night everyone. You know shrimp on the barbie. Group. Broadcast
