And by the members of the controversy over confidentiality that require names if you want to be coming up one of the hottest bands in Pittsburgh the poets are here live. Treasure after these fall zones of Capitol Records. On cue starts right now. I
earn I earn allowance Karalee S And I'm Chris more Welcome to you. Well the buzz poets are back. They were our very first local band that we featured on Q and you get to see him live again tonight. Also tonight we have a great response from a story we did on the historic St. Anthony's chapel in Troy heal and believe it or not we listen to our viewers so we'll show it again just like you wanted for Stacy Smith has tonight's cover story Stacy girl Chris. Thank you. We begin tonight with the controversy over confidentiality. For years those who wanted to take an HIV test did not necessarily have to reveal their name on them as testing has long been an option. But that could be changing. On cue correspondent
Michael Bartley is here now with both sides of this contentious local issue. Michael Stacey there are only four states in the country that do not organize computer files of HIV positive people based on people's names. Pennsylvania is one of them. So the state wants to join the majority saying having the names makes it easier to track individuals and help them. Plus the Centers for Disease Control says that HIV name based reporting system is the best way to track HIV and AIDS. But many who are used to not giving their names locally distrust government computers and worry confidentiality could be breached. I mean. Paying support for my buddy being there when they ran into us an emotional long course CICS away from
what they guess I'm not sure about. He's 54 years old HIV positive and volunteers as a counsellor here at the Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force. We'll call him James because he worries with some friends and relatives might think if they knew he was HIV positive. James tested positive 11 years ago and so far a combination of drugs has kept him from getting a full blown AIDS. He says he's feeling fine but he's upset at the possibility. Others come here to get tested will be forced to give their names and their names would be reported to the government for years at this particular testing site. People had the option of being identified by number for example. James who counsels among other people intervene as drug users fears such at risk people won't come to get tested if they have to give their real name. If they have to give their name for HIV testing it's not like the name's going to be in the newspaper or on television. They're promising
confidentiality. You just think that the people on the street distrust that. Exactly so people fear you know their family their their their neighbors finding out. And things do leak out. I think that that the population the under-served population in there that have not been tested yet that maybe they won't see it is that that the name or might be HIV testing is done by either drawing blood or this now less invasive oral test an oral specimen is taken from inside the cheek area and drawing cells to be analyzed in a lab. It is not a saliva test but an antibody test. The executive director of the Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force Bob Franken says the test is quicker and easier but he too worries mandatory name reporting will keep many
away and others are lobbying the State Department of Health not to change the rules. There are many people who really would benefit a great deal from HIV testing will be reluctant to get tested if they know their names are going to be reported. And that's because there's still a great deal of stigma attached not only to HIV AIDS but to some of the behaviors that have become associated with getting the virus. And that ranges from homosexuality to intervene is drug use which of course is illegal so I think it's understandable that people who otherwise feel stigmatized or engaged in illegal behavior may be reluctant to have a test that will have their name reported to the officials. But if you take a test for other sensitive deceases as well you have to give a name. Well I don't know if they're quite as sensitive as HIV AIDS. There are still an awful lot of stigma that's associated with the illness and especially here in Pennsylvania. We have a great deal of concern about rural areas where the stigma is even greater. I just read
the other day that Pennsylvania is they were the state with the largest rural population of any state in the country 3.6 million people and AIDS does occur in real areas and the stigma there is a very very strong and severe but the state health department argues they keep track of thousands of names for other diseases in a special database and there's never been a breach of confidentiality. The Allegheny County Health Department is not an anonymous test site. It requires a need for an HIV test. The health department for many years has provided free and confidential HIV testing for people which means we do take your name. We keep that name and keep it in confidence. We do not report that name to anyone else. Allegheny County Health Department spokesman here Moe Cole says he understands why Pennsylvania wants to join other states in the name based HIV report. When you have an individual's name you're better able to follow that individual to
ensure that they are receiving treatment for their HIV infection a treatment that can prevent the onset of four blown AIDS and that is very important. You can also do some of the other things to ensure that they are receiving adequate social and social services and other support services. So so there are some some benefits to name reporting. So while state health officials it's just having names is the best way to keep track of the disease and those who have it. Local AIDS activists argue keeping track of HIV patients be accomplished without having their name. Now recently Allegheny County adopted a policy requiring all local test sites to report positive HIV results to the health department so that they can keep better records and better determine how widespread HIV infection is around here. The county would still allow however a test site to report results anonymously. However
if the state does require later in the year that names have to be used in reporting the county would have to abide by that. And it could bring. And and two anonymous testing the Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force is still confident however that they could remain anonymous testing site. We'll have to wait and see if there will be public hearings and committees reviewing it. And of course the Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force will be lobbying to keep name based reporting at least away from their clinic there and walk ins. Michael what's your best guess what's what's the information you get whether the state may require this or not boy. You certainly get a clear impression given the fact a clear majority of states have an HIV reporting system based on a person's name. Sure get the impression that this is going to go through. We'll have to see though if it does go through. Do they have a timetable and some people would like to see it take effect. They're working on it right now there are going to be some hearings and so forth especially in Harrisburg. Probably if it goes through this the name based reporting will happen later this year perhaps early next year.
All right thank you Michael are a local church that is also a museum. Coming up after this look at Friday on cue. If the new trend in western Pennsylvania corrupt and cruel world of dog fighting Friday on cue how local authorities are stopping the culprits and helping the animals. Also Friday she was a wealthy socialite with Catherine Drexel dedicated her life to the body and races. Some say she performed miracles to help Harry Harry. It's the story of a saint with close ties to Pittsburgh and the alternative country sound of Buckeye. It's an encore broadcast Friday on Christians observe holy week it seemed like the perfect time to dip into the on cue archives. Now we want to revisit a story we did on one of Pittsburgh's religious treasures in St. Anthony's chapel intro Hill was started by a priest with a passion for collecting relics. Now a relic is an object that's venerated because of its association with a saint or a martyr. It can be a piece of the saints body their clothing even something that was merely in their possession. Well sit back as we take you on a guided tour of this fascinating and holy
place. But you can always tell when it's a stranger comes in the back door. I mean come to the front door. The expression on their face. There was one of those little mysteries I didn't know it was here and then now we come by once a month to light a candle when you come into the chapel and you feel uplifted in your spirit and you feel that you can talk to God directly as though everyone has their own reasons to visit St. Anthony's chapel. I am the man and the man. Some come to gaze at the magnificent collection of relics. Others prefer to sit and reflect. Still others seek spiritual guidance. The chapel is the dream of Father sweet son of a wealthy Belgian family who migrated to the U.S. in the 1800s. Father Mullingar
loved to collect relics. In fact he owned so many that eventually he needed a place to house them. At the time the parishioners of the most holy name of Jesus church couldn't afford a new building. So Father Mullingar dipped into his own inheritance to finance the new chapel construction took about 12 years and in 1902 it was finished on the second stage he was father David Shorr oversees the chapel and the parish and he built the chapel in two phases one to house the relics of the saints in the first part of the chapel and the second stage he would put in there a set of the stations of the cross. Father Mullingar named his chapel after Saint Anthony. Known to many as the wonder worker who performed many miracles among the sick the father Mullingar followed in the Saints healing ministry. In fact crowds flocked to him for his medical cure.
The summer camp lived in Troy hill all the life we do up with seeing treacherously and from being told by my mother my parents how it was a thing that if we stayed there would be hundreds. People I am truly just for seeing Nancy nice day people would rent out even their lawns just to sleep overnight to be here today. The great crowds of stopped at the chapel remains one of Pittsburgh's best known secrets. OK sister Margaret Liam took me on a tour. Sister Margaret there are so many relics in this chapel. I guess it's even hard to pick out your favorite but I can't take my eyes off of this one here. Can you tell us something on this side here there are around and 700 products right in here and where you see the statues there are
statues of the apostles. We have relics and there the Apostles relics of the canonized relics of some prophets piece of the table of the Last Supper piece of the crown of thorns the place of the stone of death 70 feet. Remains of some early Christian martyrs including same to me and Saint and Saint Macarius all have seals were documents attesting to their authenticity. Here this cross and this is a cross in the back of the Cross are relics of the apostles and they are the tiny pieces right inside all of this also on display a tooth from Saint Anthony on a special altar in his honor. Yes this is a replica of a picture of Our Lady of
Perpetual Help in Rome and miraculous about the original picture but the picture was not. In addition to the relics the chapel features a set of life sized cross carved from Germany. And just above the 14 stained glass windows featuring the Apostles
gives testimony to the unique vision of a priest more than a century ago. Father along with the support and hard work of dedicated parishioners in the chapel in place of beauty. Not just for the Pittsburg but for everyone who ventures to this holy destination. There are so many relics in the chapel that there simply no way to show them all. You just have to go there and see for yourself. St. Anthony's chapel is on Harvester street and Troy Hill for tour information call 4 1 2 3 2 3 9 5 0 4. Right now Chris has information on an African American Film Festival going on right here in Pittsburgh. Chris Carroll it's called the Brawns buckaroo film series raw cowboy and it starts on Friday if you don't already know the bronze buckaroo was a Hollywood film starring a renowned never going to cowboy.
Well Hugh contributive Minette seed has the details I guess the role the range and psycho about of two simultaneous if you like old films if you like African-American films if you like rare films if you like a combo meal this is the perfect weekend for you. Friday the 13th and Saturday the 14th the Cooma trust along with community media and collaboration with Pittsburgh filmmakers and the Carnegie Museum of Art film Association are putting on a wonderful two day series that are centering on films black films with a western theme and this is no better film to present this because I've never seen it but I've seen clips of it and this is just fantastic. This guy rise to rave has got to do six guns that didn't gallon at Geoffrey's. Saying he did he did everything he's perfect this movie is perfect a lot of ways because it's symbolic of what Oscar Micheaux actually did which was to make films by and for the black community which had such a low level representation at that time in that time ran from the silent movie era into the late 40s early 50s. And what he did was he made
dramas and romances and adventure movies and social commentary and especially singing Westerns for African-Americans who could not go into normal theaters and you could not get decent jobs working in normal movies you bought a clue. I bought a lovely clip starts with her. Jeff is telling the story of how he became the bronze Booker was the real actor who played the villain live in a very dashing I must say. Oh don't tell me that yes I think so. Oh heavens. All right let's take a look at the clip. It was an early evening about five o'clock and there were a bunch of children running up the alley way group of little white children and one little black child running along behind and he was crying. They went to the fence and so we called him over. It was mad those guys hit you and he said No they're my friends. So your friends what are you crying about he said well we're playing cowboy and I want to be Tom Mix and they won't let me be Tom Mix because I make same black and boyish guys in a band were really set back by that. And we talked about and said gee you know little black children cannot relate
in a cardboard picture who could maybe say. And yet there were many great black cowboys great heroes in our history. So I came back to Hollywood decided that I was going to come out here and somehow instigate a black cowboy picture to get play and thousands and thousands of segregated black theaters throughout the south. I said I got to get to make that cowboy picture somehow. Jeffries went on to become the first black singing cowboy. Yeah. Jeffrey Sachs has a war already couldn't be cuter. Now this is a film series. This is a film series on Saturday April 14th at Pittsburgh filmmakers Melwood screening room which is located very close to North Oakland. They're going to show black Indians an American story which also is an amazing thing because so many African-Americans share a history with Native
Americans either forged during slavery before slavery immediately after slavery. And there's always been that strange intangible Western Indian black people thing so if you wonder about all that stuff if you're just curious or if you like film this is the way to go. You know if people really want to know more about that relationship you would talk about they ought to read a book called Black read in bed laid by our bird talks about the relationship between blacks and Indians in the Old West. Filmmakers number 4 1 2 6 2 2 3 2 1 2 that's 4 1 2 6 2 2 3 2 1 2 if you want more information on the bra series I'm ready to ride off into the sunset. All right thanks.
