We have in this situation also to distinguish between. Teaching the child's Windham sense of gloom but with me some football totally got into the psyche of this community. That old school kind of toughness came from the
steel mills. I love the hit dead first hit that first lick my dead guy out of High School in 1957. Dan Marino Central Catholic 1979 in the area of western Pennsylvania. Football is a means to a way of life. Sunday afternoon at 5 here on WQED 13 Next on to the Friday forum Chris Moore welcomes the regular panel Fred Allen Cox and Ruth Ann Baker. And tonight they are talking stealers with our guest Edwin Elsa. Also tonight meet the nature woman. She's teaching local people about preserving this region's wild life with her unique program made in Pittsburgh. Good
evening and welcome to On Q magazine. I'm Stacey Smith. On cue always wraps up the week with a Friday for an evening of talk about some of the big issues of the week. But first a look at some of those headlines. The war on terrorism. The first group of captured al Qaeda and Taliban fighters have now arrived in Cuba. They will be detained at a special facility at the United States naval base in Guantanamo Bay. Congress has stepped up efforts to investigate the collapse of Enron Corporation. Today a Senate panel is set to issue 51 subpoenas and a House committee is asking executives at Enron's accounting firm to turn over information in their personal records. President Bush was in eastern Pennsylvania today where he signed legislation to clean up polluted industrial sites. The five year plan will provide up to a quarter of a million dollars a year to states and local governments Pittsburgh's embattled school board members will spend this weekend on a retreat. It is an effort to soothe recent tensions over such issues as school closing school
openings and the budget. And of course the Steelers will play their first playoff game Sunday January the 20th at Heinz Field. Their opponent will be the lowest remaining seed in the AFC. So that means if the Jets defeat the Raiders tomorrow the Steelers will be playing the Jets. Otherwise the Steelers will play the winner of the Ravens Dolphins game which takes place on Sunday. Coming up former Steelers joins the Friday forum to talk about Steeler football and more. What you're watching on Q magazine because these foundations carry local television to help pay for it. Welcome back to rags he'd have curious war and we've got a rowdy group ready to go on the Friday for me it's time now for our Friday form so let's introduce our regular week Lee panelists friend Hans Berger joins us from KDKA radio and PC in CTV. Then Baker is a columnist for the Post-Gazette North addition and Alan Cox can be heard afternoons on 1 0 5 9. The eggs stolen again and tonight as a play on Fever is back Spitzbergen Hugh has drafted almost illiterate SPORTS COMMENTATOR And when Nelson to be our special guest welcome to the Friday for American brand we have you here. I've enjoyed your commentary on a lot of the sports shows where I have seen you. I wonder what you think is the biggest difference between this
year's Steelers and last year's other than obvious fact that they're winning. Well the biggest factor as I see it is the hiring of Michael larky is as off as a coordinator. The problem with the SEALs were they were floundering with hiring people that wanted to get their system in a set of working with the players of the head. And Mike has been around long enough even almost through the Chang era where he kind of knows you know what Cordell can and can't do. The biggest factor of course is is Kordell Stewart splay and Tommy Clemons is kind of brought out a little bit more shall we say confidence and backs coach. Well I mean yeah with him you know behind Cordell I think Kordell all he needed was somebody the pad want to back every once in a while and say hey maybe you need to take a step here maybe you need to read this maybe to see that they kind of simplify things for Cordell and it's not like you know you need to read a progression. Everybody had all of this thing about you want to read progression this progression that progression the other no throw the ball someplace it is not open. Ron is that the way the game has changed from the traditional drop back quarterback to to suit the athlete in the skill they have in
each position. Well I think it's changed in that the guys are so much bigger and so much stronger you don't have time to be you know a Joe Naima sitting back there and dancing around and just reading and not have the ability to escape. If you don't have the ability to skate they're going to blitz you they're going to show you all kinds of coverages and there's big human beings that are going to be chasing you around in the back of you and if you can't if you can't escape them tell you what you're going to get yourself back there I mean that's just a fact a la Al and you follow the Steelers much. Well I mean yeah I've been following him 50 percent because my Bears have been doing as a business ever Johnny 19 years yeah they won the Super Bowl on the Pittsburgh and that was not the afterlife. You know you guys support the home team but I think the sweetest. This was revenge was my home team. Brad he's done about the best I got I was I'm a transplanted Pittsburgh so I followed the Steelers 50 percent of the time that I split my time but I think the sweetest revenge was Maxim magazine. There I think December issue had an article a big long article on the
most over paid over hyped underperforming athletes in every sport and Cornell was in it and it came out just as the Steelers had gotten a playoff berth it's gotten just as the Steelers how everybody had just oh we love this guy we love this guy now and everybody else in this article are still you know overpaid and underperforming but he has risen to the occasion you know Cornell's do and you know much better than anybody thought he would do. Well I guess that's a good thing. The fans certainly have turned around who then have you followed this much at all. I mean I know you love the stadiums and that they're there now and you want really to go over there. Yeah I wondered if you wanted them every penny all of that. I've I followed the season I'm a fair weather fan when they're winning it's really fun to watch. But I'm as confused I'm more confused than Allen is because I've lived in it. I'm hard to believe Qada I served in Washington D.C. and we lived in Erie for a while where you can either root for Pittsburgh or Cleveland so it gets really. Now I never made that
mistake then. Groaning over there Fred what is your assessment of this I know you get calls all the time about how they're doing. Do you think fans are fair weather or not in the sense that who vanished talking about but all you gotta do is win and the greatest thing since sliced bread right see Enron. The problem here was that that's true of course fans are fair weather friends fans and that what they say drones but drones a jersey is the third best selling in the country now. Absolutely when you when you're on top when you lose your bomb. And that's the way to get one. And you know and Ruth and I will disagree on this but you know how we talk to the folks in the city about talk to the business people the city of Pittsburgh and how much money they're making because the Steelers are in the playoffs. Giant Eagle each playoff games like millions of dollars for them not be party to a party has rays etc. talk to the hotels that are going to be filled up when they have less than 40 percent occupancy at this time of year. There's we've got a we've have
home field advantage so we're getting paid back on these stadiums and we get paid back in with the pirates in terms of parking taxes and other taxes that are coming back that we didn't have before. I certainly agree with you to a certain extent but there's a difference between us getting paid back because we built stadiums and us getting paid back because we've got a winning team. Do we have a winning team because they have a new home to play on. And usually I ask the powers that you know I think the art of the argument is whether we'd have a team at all and whether we could not have it not forget the extra income the income that happens during a regular season so well because the market is the way it is because things are the way they are having a winning team is really going to help Pittsburgh. But it doesn't This is the Tampa Bay which is where I'm from and I'm not a fan just want to let you guys know. But you know the fact that they are away yet brings a lot of things in here in the focus and respect we're going to focus. Time to show off the CD and we can show both of our beautiful stadiums and so so I think it's good to hear but there are a lot greater problems out there that unfortunately
those incentives for our particular team in our town just will not you know I'm surprised by is how exciting it is. It's it's a kick on Sunday afternoon and she comes home from church and get to turn on a game in your team's winning and eat good food and it's like it affects your mood for quite a long time you know we forget what it was like and when the when the Steelers are making it to the Super Bowl downtown they have signs in the windows every office building would put here we go steel and it was great to see the Duquesne incline get national exposure. Vand Yeah I mean this is the town is it is it's electric when when this happens it's a lot of fun I'll tell you what amazes me and I have to I have to give major credit the Pittsburgh fans fair weather or not is how many Steelers fans go to road games more so than any other city behind them. To morrow you know that that's not true. Well maybe so maybe something to get in your car and drive I mean farther away than Baltimore or you know I mean yeah they're going all over the place. What happens is in these other cities too as you'll find is there is already a fan base there right that a Steeler fans that never left from the Great use of the 70s and they just they just kind of show up and just kind of go to
the game. Then you have the influx of the people that are already here going here you know and that coupled with the fans already and as a trans I mean you go to myrtle beach you'll find a steel bar you know I was in our business our goods our clubs Pittsburgh clubs all across the country is exactly what I want to air in England tomorrow morning. And there's a Steeler fan over there the guy knows all about Kordell Stewart the guys talk about the British accent he's telling he's telling us how great it is record I can't do that was that. But so it's interesting and the downtown Pittsburgh downtown partnership is trying to get Pittsburgh to try to get all over the country to try to get bars to have steel or steel or parties were trying to get one set up over there in England and they were not I think when do they boil the fries before they put him out of that and then they use salt at all there are sort of talking football over there. The big we have a hard question and we're going to come up with a hard question tomorrow when we go on the radio in England for the for the British you know most of what I did. What what are the Steelers colors they go I know. Was there actually no season ticket holder from Ireland
this NG who frequent low season ticket a season ticket holder comes over for probably half of the games. Make sure the comes over when they have two games in a row in concession and comes over again Lang's out and I ask what the best sophisticates money around and it's now got to give them to me and I can't get any takers. I had those yapping on the show when I want to play all situation look like you this is a bye week because they've won so many games and that that surprised a whole lot of people but there are all those formulas about who they play if and when the wild card in all this sort of thing rises over in the right before you hit it right at the opening man he says. First of all you've got the two lowest seeds will simplify it as as low as possible to the lowest common denominator to lower CS The Jets and Baltimore. If the Jets win. Then they could possibly come here if Baltimore wins they could possibly come here. The Jets of the lower seed they will come here if they win so if both the Jets and Baltimore win remember Baltimore's play Miami Jets play in
Oakland. If jet if the Jets win they're coming here for sure no matter what bottomless the chances of us seeing Baltimore for a third time at 50 50 and I don't like that you know this time I beat a job but what is one thing when it's really good advice you know is the thing about Baltimore they're not very good. I mean you don't you know that's just the facts are the facts you know they just aren't very good. Cordell exploited them big time with the passing game the last time they were there I think that's where they are very very weak in their pass defense. They don't have much of an office either their quarterback that they put all their stock and after you know trading away and actually cutting their quarterback their Super Bowl quarterback of last year this new quarterback that they have isn't worth a dime I mean he has to be able throw the ball downfield. So you can't be too worried about their past even if they really can't run at them they've had injuries to have well they've had some injuries but you know who has it. I mean that you know the Steelers have also and the Steelers have made the adjustment the Baltimore Ravens have speaking of injuries was the best going to look like with all that rest on and they talk about he's going to be rusty is going to take you know about a nine pad Brillo pad to scrape the rust off
so he's going to be I mean you know and I really wanted to see him play against you know Cleve in the sense that I really wanted to see him get some work just to work some rust off. I can't see how you can be off for seven weeks and then come back I don't care how veteran a player he is. But the running game looked pretty good with Chris in there and I was just a guy from the small college and even he looked good in that often sublime really. He will not play much in this coming game you're going to have the studies show observer will be back healthy who has been playing very good I would expect two to start I would not expect the buses to come off of 7 weeks and they just throw him right in there to the dogs I think they got to work him in slowly but I could be wrong but I'd like to see if you get a chance to establish a running game and work the bus in as needed. What about the fans in all this. They always a critical factor it seems to me they've been loud like they should be the last couple of games. It took them a while you know with a new stadium and people moving around the Season tickets were going you know a little empty sometimes it looks like everybody who got the memo as he saw me get held
back and you know you could go inside and you can have your hotdog or whatever Watch it up on a monitor you know go in nice spiffy bathroom you don't even have to come outside to watch the game you'll be in club level ceiling seating so. For those people that want to enjoy the game they're going to be outside they're going to be ready to go and I don't think going to see very many people inside I don't care how cold it's going to be it's going to be a great atmosphere. But it took a while for the fans to just because everybody was sitting next to different people so they didn't know who they were sitting around and usually when people are in a crowd you're sitting around people you know you're much more apt to act like you're crazy as opposed to sitting beside Fred however who I do not know and I have my hot breath and stop and know much about football right. I sit and then I can find I just don't give a beer bottle because they'll act like they're in Cleveland. What about that portion of fan behavior you think it's been kind of boorish across the season to those things like New Orleans and Cleveland just isolated incidents. Why don't know why it became such a big deal because I've had dog biscuits
oranges beer bottles everything thrown in them at me when we played Cleveland we went to Denver we had oranges and everything pelting on us when we were coming out of the tunnel so I don't know why it's such a big deal I mean I can see if you disagree with the call. Please don't throw anything out there but believe me the fans have been throwing stuff at players for years and it never really became a big deal until this year when you know it was some other people involved and it shows that the man a great for it's exactly I think you that enjoy the game you know when guys we did a lot of people would you know about a lot of it is now a weapon nobody get hurt give me a break I guess I grew up in Philadelphia throw snowballs at Santa Claus come on and they go there they they want to vote. You know Penn State they treasure. We would like it if you don't want to hear that you have to. Well if you raise it you paid your money yes exactly. As part of the goal was to have some fun but it still is going to go all the way to New Orleans. Yes you think so. Unequivocal Yeah they have the best team in the AFC bar none as long as they don't start believing in their press clippings and believing everything that we the media are saying about them and keep their
mind focused on the business at hand which is winning one game at a time. One play at a time. I don't think they want to have any problem. And also I did magic whether we go in or would it take it was stated that it's souls if they need to give 110 percent when we run the table we're going to run the table and we're going to get there. Leave me in my cliche as well that I was taught no guile to God it is by the cliche. OK I know you know what it is right you're right you're absolutely right it's so simple but that's just the way it is. You cannot let your focus get outside of what you need to do. You've got to keep your mind on your work that's a chuckle. OK keep your mind on your work because if you start thinking about man when they introduced me when I come out the tunnel on the Super Bowl I think I'm going to do a dance. I'm going to be saying we've got to work on some more music and we start thinking like that it's all over man and then the team that is not supposed to be to comes in there and upset so what do you think of Coach Cal and his motivational techniques. He said so much this week to the precious office the pressure was on the regular season it's
not in the playoffs where you think that's a typical coaching ploys trying to take the pressure off of the players and put it on himself or dissipate it or put it somewhere where it is going to be the players have to do the playing he understands that he's just trying to pull a little bit of pressure off of him and say hey we're we've had a successful year regardless of how far we're going and that's true but if they don't go any further than the first playoff game and they lose it there's going to be some pressure on the players big time next year so he's just trying to dissipate a little bit. Make sure that his team comes in focus and ready to go and if they do that they'll play like they've been playing all are you happy with the way that people like Plaxico and finally come through and has Woody's got to be to play it for me. I mean that guy goes down catches balls makes blocks. He does everything you ask of him and more that you ask of a wide receiver GM his word has been one of the most physical guys you know on the whole team and for me to say that about a wide receiver I mean it's almost sacrilegious. It's at last I mean I'm really are almost hurt when I have to say that but he goes on he kills people I mean knock people out and then he stands over he doesn't look well you gotta talk to him a little bit after you knock him
silly you know they thought he's got a couple of lads that he's got a couple parts. He's my kind of player you know he gets dirty and stuff and he's nothing's pretty about his game. Yes mother in law already has this problem on anything pretty but just catch balls and just play and that's what you play football. OK so you hollered something he's created. So will you be in New Orleans with the Steelers. I don't know you but I think I'll try to go as a fan and just enjoy and I want to take it all and I want to see those guys play hard and then afterwards when I soaked it all in then I'll be better capable I have to tell everybody there was one time when they were about eight and two and it was like this was the big game against the Ravens or something like that. We walked into the studio as you were getting ready to go in with or Tolo this man had his game face on like he was going to play I thought you go up there no one I could have played for about a play or two. I didn't rock some like razor blades you did not I had to get out go somewhere and I think you had both of being here and to our regulars too we do appreciate it. Coming up on cue the
biggest salamander in history may we get him in uniform too. He's on the loose and could be in your backyard Karalee ask me has the story on who's trying to catch this giant amphibian next. Want to know more about on cue magazine's recent stories upcoming guest on q community and of course viewer feedback. It's all on our website. WQ dot org. Just follow the links to on cue. If you watch a lot of television you've probably seen the new breed of outdoor reporters who catch snakes and wrestle crocodiles. Well western Pennsylvania has a similar personality and of course that word is similar but instead of showing off her expertise on cable it shows her knowledge in the classroom. Tonight we bring you the nature woman and her popular wildlife program made in Pittsburgh.
Stay in your seats but look at the budgets from the mission frogs out what she wants people to know more about Western Pennsylvania's reptiles and amphibians especially schoolchildren. Her goal every child loves their backyard. What do fish underwater. It bothers me that I go to a place and I talk and everything and that I mean our What's the most poisonous snake and they next have live babies are on says my baby. OK this is the deal. Some snakes
snakes this one today. April is at the Urban League of Pittsburgh. The school these students are learning about herbs and if you didn't know that means frogs toads salamanders turtles and snakes. I brought tons of stuff with me to show you to pass around. So the first thing we're going to start off by talking about is a lecture she prefers a more active approach. It's just going to smell you a little bit and that's what the Tang is doing. That's what the tongue is doing the tongue is coming out. You feel Bansemer he likes it. Next group of slimy stands for legs long tail. Why is it not a lizard when April
brings out the salamander. It's called a hellbender salamander lives under water. Did you know that these live in Pennsylvania critters come from all around this region. She has a special permit from the fishing boat commission that allows her to catch and maintain these animals so she can show them in her programs. This is where she gets it. Today April and her friends are in a creek up in the Allegheny forest. They're all biologists but they're also in food and reptile lovers so it's not unusual to find them spending their day in a stream looking for life. It's a hellbender hold on pretty black spots.
This is a rare catch the largest salamander in Pennsylvania. This completely aquatic creature can grow up to 29 inches and weigh five pounds. Basically you need to find three little and large objects and they generally enjoy good water like April will release this hellbender already has one for show. And later that day the group goes hurting looking for snakes. They found plenty under some rocks and alone busy highways a lot of people wouldn't think but roadside habitat makes some of the best habitat. So if you just stop for a minute look under some rocks you can find a number of things from Selman interest me but 20 species. So that's Maine and we have 20 species snakes some of which will find the best places to live under rocks in the sun.
These are northern ring necks and they lay eggs and they specialize on eating Sounders and other small invertebrates like spiders and slugs and that sort of thing. These are real common but people are killed them because I think they're poisonous. They do snakes here. Can I hear what do they do. Language they feel vibrations and the other thing they do is smell. Now out of 28 snakes in Pennsylvania how many are poisonous line kept going. Sorry back in the classroom is where April really hopes to make an impact teaching children to respect and preserve wildlife a lot of times when I go to work. To show you what happens is I think you can knock on a salamander and I took it home and died. I think it's important to know shouldn't we. We go out with habitat for these animals. It's best to just go out and observe them in nature and leave them when I need one volunteer to demonstrate a frog.
OK ready. I want you to three ready. I'm ready for more information about Klaus and the interactive environmental programs go to our website dot org and follow the links to on cue. Now here's a look at what you'll see Monday on Q Our cover story is all about preventing Pittsburgh What's the best way to lure young people to Pittsburgh.
