We're back live with the magazine publisher editor Chris Fletcher is back now after
the news of the week with a covering sports network. You look like an expert. Hello I'm Stacy Smith and welcome to On cue. Tonight we will have your guide to all things football as we bring you our version of Steelers 1 0 1. First though we are going to talk about the news
of the week with upright a fearsome foursome. And here to make the introductions are on cue hosts Chris Moore and Carol ESB. Even though I'm over here by myself I will not sing my rendition of Bobby Vinton is lonely I'm mr lonely. There is a merciful God. Thank you Stacy. Now we begin with the special guest chair and this week it belongs to Pittsburgh magazine publisher and editor and King Chris Fletcher. I get to keep the chair is to do as you match to his left is the woman on the right. Ruth and Baker column. I'm sure those guys that we you know have to make it evident to people sometimes that I just want to be called ok and can next the man of a Thousand Faces. Alan Cox of 1 0 5 9 The xx and then the newest cast member of Survivor to the right answer. I think you can last forever. Go Lions. Photograph the last of them are all of them ramrod it up for the big game. I'm going to. Allan we understand you brought something to share with the class tonight.
I did actually yes it's not a you know it's not but I like everybody to you know them over again this is a very good I've got a tight shot and there's a little bit you know if there is any indication as to the impact that the show has had on Pittsburgh it's the brainy line of fearsome foursome action figure which one is really there that is not already set up the Hons man of course is the original lineup but yours is still being made so the jury employer action figure and I honestly want ended and then at the very end or than everybody especially special guests. I know as with the show there is a choking hazard to children under three but you can find these at any fine toy store around the as I said the truth and all is still being out there trying to get the measurements right. And on cue hosts trotting out a bottle of contrasts with him trying to do. I see they got all the other measurements right and the you know the interesting thing about these is that the likenesses are so uncanny and they look exactly like all of us a special guest has hair and oh all over.
But but the un peu hosts are sold separately when they say they're really that special deep nasty plating but in truth it and gave retailers the biggest dog as moving on to mathematics for its assessments Pittsburgh Mayor Tom Murphy was reassessed and he says he plans to fight it Ruth. And they believe you're dizzy with the rest of us a go girl. And yeah I'd fight it except you know. I mean fine if he doesn't agree with that but when you saw what was the property about listen in that it was 18 South eighty seven thousand twenty eight or so and they say he says they compared it with homes at least a mile away from him in Observatory heel which are he says are worlds apart. I thought he was on observatory pairs of 11 and then I'd say is assessment time trick or treating him like did you. Would you go if I want his hands ma'am and the Cape of the nature that I still have a brain it's a very
maybe use it for the next well what are you going to be in your hand here. He ran out of candy actually with time we got there we went over to Franco's house and a couple other which Sophie's apartment and he was so he was going to do it he said we're out of candy but come on up and take some of my kids. I was like yeah I think that maybe that's one way to get his assessment lowered but but he's fighting it he says it's it's unfair and he sounds like so many other people who are complaining about their ass now Mr Ferguson from Saber Systems says that it is fair and the likelihood of it being changed is little or none because the mayor is comparing his property to some property near he has that sofa look for below market I value it well below market value very interesting Mr Ferguson is raising judgment without having a hearing. When the guy the big Maha in charge said listen these are preliminary. We may in fact he said we may have made some mistakes and so will have the hearing. Bring your evidence with you. So I saw the Ferguson
guys I know were right on that it's interesting that he would say that before even having a hearing. Well it's also interesting that if you check the website sometimes you can't find any addresses of the comparable properties and so you don't know where they are that is how I feel about it. Well I think that's the worst aspect of it because without any context for what's going on it's almost if they wanted you not to be able to protest because you don't have enough information. So when we get it it's the whole game is location location location. Then they ignore the first rule of real estate. Right. Well they're I guess they're not still in there just to see it and maybe that's the difference. So you have the mayor going down the city retire we're going to add together we will win. Now we're going down to the doorsill fire hall. When you're done I'll go raise a ruckus. They were after they were all that was going go it's well you know bingo it gets pretty heated up to the nine I think the problem that they're having mostly is with land with
parcels with lots you know just a lot of you know 30 40 thousand dollars for an empty lot. But it's so hard and certain it doesn't seem like in certain townships and certainly this a pallet that you can have a gas station next to a house or an industrial parking lot next to a house. How do you really to how do you assess that. But isn't it interesting how Jim Roddy also got socked in his response was OK well maybe he's good at the moment is the really interesting thing is when these people are all when the mayor is selling his house I wonder how much he'd ask for the house how much he thinks his house is worth. But now that they're being assessed it's never worth as much. We're not we're not this is a piece of junk this is garbage. You know my wife doesn't clean the bathroom up stairs for three months and that we get now this is no good then you go to sell the house. But we got the best of everything you know I would. So but isn't that what everyone does that mean Joe the mayor is just like all of us that in some respects as all my people have the right to see if that affects his policies the savvy the taxpayers money my guess is he's going to one of those meetings like everyone else going to see him
in the background waving or waiting on his time to speak. Well you know I don't know if he's right or wrong. He's the one of the indicators is houses on your block in your area what they have sold for what the fair market value is not three miles away. We're not even three blocks away in some areas of this break even way even where the mayor is I mean there's a difference between here and the end of this the street something has for hundred sixty five thousand you can be three blocks away and it's where 30. Yeah so that's the absence of addresses for the kind of the cell phone question of did saber systems do a good job. What do you think it's a tough job that they have just by the sheer numbers we know it's a tough job but did they do a good one of the nine yet I don't know when I find out you have a when I you know you sound just like the mayor for one of the last ones about Monroeville So it's going to be like on COBRA thing. So we'll have to hear from you later on now that speaking up I'm sure. OK let's shift gears here if we can and what amounts to a theological
U-turn on the Vatican has said that condoms may be OK for containing the spread of the AIDS virus. Is this a good thing or a bad thing and it is certainly a reversal from something Mr. Banta may Basco participated in back in 1998 when he said essentially the same thing this might present an opportunity to curb the spread of AIDS. It's a kinder gentler Catholic Church by the way. Anthony who is the bishop who confirmed me when I was 12 years old is that right. That's a way certainly good humor that's why I think I had an effect on whether or not I mean you know what I mean. Well I don't it's just the basics are you ok. No no I think it is good it's you know it's showing some compassion and I mean they they're talking about still that in the church's opinion it still is the only sure way is is to abstain. Of course but I thought it was a good move for the Catholic Church was a busy week in this country.
Well there's more to talk about we'll get to that in a second. Ruthann do you think that this is the age of enlightenment that we come into that and the way it was introduced to and in the Vatican's newspaper buried so deep within the story that it missed all of you from reporters until some ethicists read it and and saw the true import of it did they kind of sneak into it. No because they're not writing it for non-Catholics necessarily there's a there's been a lot of headlines recently involving the Catholic Church where I wanted us to discuss here or anywhere else whether they were addressing their own or the outside world and it makes a world of difference. You care for me now and not then how do you feel is I don't think they are unique. The dreaded inducing my No I think it's a very humane thing for a church to say here's what our moral standing is. We realize that human beings behavior often fall short. If it does please don't risk your life for it.
I think a church can make that final distinction and they are making there seems to be a distinction between what they're talking about as to they're talking about containing it not stopping the spread of it because if they were to stop the spread of it that would be almost condoning evil behavior. The point taining it is like a married couple that one of them has AIDS and they're keeping it with you know so that the other person doesn't get it but it's within that family and it's not the spread. There's a distinction and did the language did they say where they addressing it only marriage only or just you know not only that not everywhere but full sexual that the purpose is that one of the articles I read said that they know that there are people in fact Bishop Basco say this in 1988 on the committee that he examined this whole issue because he worked with a number of health care workers. It seemed to him according to health care workers that there were people with HIV who continued to be sexually active. And so morally they felt the only course to take was to say
for these people if it stops the spread of this dreaded disease then yes they should use condoms. And it would be an act of compassion on the part of the person who remained sexually active to at least say I'm not going to try to infect anyone else or I will be responsible for what I carry within me. Alan are you sexually active you think this question around as a sexually active Catholic Chris you are carefully. I am Catholic you know I mean it was like out like I'm in a deprogramming period right now but I was raised Catholic yes. Well I you know I consider myself a dyed in the wool cafeteria catholic I kind of pick and choose you know what I want to do. However you know I think the church should be commended for getting right on the ball with the whole condom thing at least they didn't wait too long. You know people complain that you know why doesn't the church and Catholicism the Catholic Church. Because it's largely a political organization as well. It takes a lot of heat for this
but every religion takes heat for not being more contemporary. But it's not really religion. I mean I think this is a great thing they've done I think it's immoral. I think obligation on their part to at least you can't whitewash this and pretend it doesn't exist you have to do something about it but it's not really religion's job to stay contemporary I mean religion can't go changing its rules. You know every 10 years I know the Catholics have tried really hard to change you know. But I think that one reason that the Catholic Church and other churches who update their theology that doctrine or whatever. And I understand what you're saying about change isn't one thing that they say so populous and or popular among the parishioners the believers in the well but it's. Because they're able to change now that there's a lot of people who argue I mean I don't I don't necessarily know if that's the case I think of things in terms of I see the Catholic Church make a lot of changes. I'm glad to see them make a change like this that I think and have a very serious and long lasting and positive effect on its members and other people. They seem to kind of trifle with change a lot more than
anything else you know or like people complain well how come women can't be clergy you know well all of the Lord's Apostles were men. Well you know what that doesn't matter anymore so there seem to be things that should change like that like women should be able to be a clergy since they're 50 percent of the global population and something like the whole condom issue I think that's a very important step for them to take your frowning out as a Salvation Army view that oh I don't think the Salvation Army has a view I mean there's no ban on the Salvation Army which is my church on birth control and I'm not being critical of the Catholic Church it's a stand they take. Interesting in listening to the conversation we say well we think it's compassionate now that there's someone who we don't want to spread now. So is it OK for the Catholic Church says no birth control for married couples. But if you're under married and have HIV you can have sex but just use a condom. I don't know about those other things I think that yeah I think that's why I was.
I wonder what that rule is eat that end because that's one of those kinds of things where it's compassionate and no one can argue that but as far as doctrine and dogma go it's in their best interest to keep it relatively vague. You know because the more stipulations you put on those things the initial compassion of the gesture is going to be washed out with sniping and things of that nature so I think it's probably if you bring up the question of what it was you know what are the specifics. I don't really know if they want to get into that right away. Well you know I was just wondering I mean it was it was you know I don't know either. And is it OK to have sex outside the marriage if that's ok then. Well that's still not OK I think kind of don't they understand that even by asking people to abstain that they that they can't achieve that and they're talking about beyond marriage there. You know that I can understand that they can't that people aren't going to they have come to that Realizing I think it's really I don't believe that this is one of those rules that most Catholics abide by the no birth control rule. I mean I have a lot of friends of mine who are Catholics and I would tell
you what they use the rhythm method not to have kids. They're planning their families as they should. And that's up to them and not being a Catholic I'm not and I don't want to be critical of the Catholic Church I'm just observing what apparently most of my Catholic friends are saying you know that's not important. OK before we leave the condom issue Sports Illustrated had something about a local university and condoms too didn't they Chris. Right they had commemorative condoms with Pitt stadium and not commemorative condoms with that state and it's beautiful the slogan on it was FEELS LIKE IT'S NOT EVEN THERE I don't know I you know I don't know why you ask me that I have to try to figure out what kind of hand it was in a stadium to scale. Well you had to get the number. OK I'm going back to the church for just a second that it's reported that the pope Pope in fact performed an exorcism on a woman last week who was said to be possessed by Satan who's left on laughing why are you laughing because this is why people make fun of my support.
If you're Catholic this is why people make fun of you because in the year 2000 the pope is still trying to get demons out of somebody I mean I you know I understand the situation now and he was somewhere in St. Peter's Square. I was on the air. But it isn't where I was in the Vatican and everyone why I'm here I'm an approach a bit and we can get one where the woman has rights to him and him a voice not unlike the movie that is celebrating the anniversary of this cavern is a voice right supposedly approached him. People with him recognize right away that there was something wrong and I understand the church tries to make a difference between mental illness and actual demon possession if they can they do it with their pending on what this the that the London Times reported that the devil beat the pope. Now if you read the Italian newspaper arrow or something like that which is one of the main major Italian newspapers they said no pope triumphs over Satan in St. Peter's Basilica and so it's I understand that they try to make a distinction between
those two things but you know what. What I read was that she spoke in a cavernous voice and that she was she was showing feats of strength by pushing vicious bishops off of her. Well those are the same effects that you can get from a good dose of crystal meth. So whether or not they want to start making those kinds of distinctions I don't know I think it's good PR for the church. We're going to know whether you believe that people can be possessed by demons or not. I mean they were in Bible times I mean Jesus very if you're if we don't know what they were in by well I mean we don't know anything about the Bible in the fact that it's for the most part probably a very lovely work of fiction don't we often the work that we often use the word that you're battling demons around the Grand throne. We often use the phrase that we're battling demons using demons as addictions and saying using it the same Can't a demon also be an addiction something a monkey on your back so that's maybe why would you make that distinction but in reality in Biblical times there were a myriad number of afflictions that simply weren't understood. And if you're epileptic or if you were I mean you could name anything and at the time they were drilling
holes in people's heads to let out the evil humors. So I think to a certain degree there is still there is still an element of that that is alive and well in the Catholic Church and this is when it kind of rears its head. I'm not going to go out on a limb and say no there's no such thing as a devil possession but I think people start to get this image in their head of Linda Blair's head spinning around in her spin up the soup and I don't necessarily know if that's the case yet but Don King was seen in the background looking for the remote. Yes I mean what's big is the same the pope in round five. Well I guess if we have our leaches right after the show it was old we do exactly what it is that is that I live this is where I am. He's got rid of the Jesus look we need this yeah you know you may hear these stories. Great recently just because I got tired everybody call me Jesus you know the kind of guy I mean we were out there in the Salvation Army on the street corner you come down there you'll buy the drum we will put our hand on you pal we will bring you. I just want to say you know this is way too sacrilegious. We're really making a mockery of many things right now. And yes ideally no I'm opting
out. OK here we go. Well you opted out at the right now because we're all Muslim but we'll do it again and try to be religious next Friday we want to thank this week's panel. Chris Fletcher with then Baker and Cox am friend and then I took him down and I'm sorry you know you think in this things around there are various groups I have volunteers asked by Ruth and the other guy to head over to co-host Stacy Smith next. He's going to make sure you're not a big sissy The next time you watch a Steelers game. But I was over I can say I'm not going first to give us a 45 second time for this we'll go ahead the money on human. To be in the movies or on TV then you want to watch us Monday on cue. Our one guest has done a ballad Jack and the movie TV shows and commercials that are made in Pittsburgh.
In fact she used to represent a 10 year old has a great story and we'll go behind the scenes to show you what that's like. Also on Monday the woman who started one of the sites on the web and she herself not only don't know if you know there's an op of the Steelers play the Browns this weekend in Cleveland it is all always a big match up and it's not the time to look like a sissy in front of your Steeler fanatic friends. Not to worry though if you don't know the difference between a roughing and an interference problem the penalty well on cue contributor Angie Corley is here now with Steeler football 1 0 1 0 9. The Steelers an extra point away time there so
let us still. Yes I know very little about football. Oh yes absolutely. Yeah 21 yard run from Kordell Stewart and there was no indecision there. So how much do you know about football. Who's a current Steelers coach. What is a steel curtain back and how high is the cross bar. How do you get a par in a par.
Do you know how many attempts you get to get a first down. Who was a coach before coward. I know that's where Chuck know who holds the record for most passing yards and again three branches of the white ants are already most stars in the game. Take a guess. They were no match. Steve Young. Me Is it me. Yeah Marina. Johns. Norm Bon broccoli.
After safety Where's the kick off from that 25. How many times had the Steelers been to the Super Bowl twice. Maybe five for one for the thought. Now do you know they're cheating over there. Is it that they can now. 6. We think about women in football. Doing what. How do you make a par. If you need your golf clubs if you get a first down. Offer the first place. I could see it as a double eagle I need some golf balls to go along with that if you get it after your second down. I consider it depends on how far the drivers even get the third down. I considered as a birdie. That's not it's golf. If you get it on the fourth now I consider
expanding some of your money and that's one one. But you know that's now six points three point touchdown. There you are still are 1 0 1 0. But I do like that. Did you suggest I do like that new line that shows you what they need to get the first down. That makes it so much easier for that little if you're sure. He'll yeah. Ironically And I think that's a great idea. There are times the players would like to have it out there to be better. What is it like to figure it out. I like I like listening to Dennis Miller. I guess the jury's still out on that. But I actually enjoy some way things. You give him. Yeah I think you know as soon as he finds his feet he's going to make it happen.
Well it's a gray overcast day in South Bend Indiana as a Fighting Irish of Notre Dame anyway. Well that's got to do it for us today. You know I don't know if we told anybody why no I told everybody but I was nominated for six and the words are tomorrow in Philadelphia so we'll let you know how we did on Monday. That's regulations if you can catch a rebroadcast of the Emmy nominated on cue tonight. We've changed it up this weekend right. And 11:30 a.m. them again Monday afternoon. Well and don't forget Pittsburgh casting director Donna Kupp objectives are Monday one on guess and she told me my hair years ago. So if you know anyone who wants to be in the movies or on TV on Monday night at 7:30 and work we'll see you then have a great weekend. Good night. WQED
