Description
Episode Description
Starting with his famous cartoon, "The Nazi Juggernaut," the program reviews the brilliant collection of drawings made by Fitzpatrick during the years of the Nazi rise to power and subsequent defeat. Joining the host and cartoonist is Professor Gustav Mesmer, a German engineer who remember vividly what it was like to live under Nazi domination and who comments freely on the psychological reaction of Germany both to the Hitler regime and to the adverse criticism leveled against it by other nations. This program uses not only the cartoons, but also film presentation of some of the events of the period. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
Series Description
From 1913 to 1958 Daniel R. Fitzpatrick drew exciting, stimulating, nationally recognized editorial cartoons for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Prohibition, the Depression of 1929, the New Deal, World War II and the Korean War all were reflected in his work, as were less transient questions such as civil rights, the labor movement, slums and gangsterism, and the corruption of justice. Daniel R. Fitzpatrick retired from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in August, 1958, after forty-five years as editorial cartoonist. In that long period, the newspaper published over 14,000 of his cartoons ranging in topic from fashion to Fascism, from civic leaders to corrupt judges and conniving gangsters. He won two Pulitzer Prizes, in 1926 and 1954, and has seen his cartoons published in papers, magazines and books around the world. KETC-TV in St. Louis has now produced a series of fifteen half-hour episodes featuring the dean of American cartoonists, DR Fitzpatrick, and the cartoons he drew to amuse, awaken and arouse his fellow-citizens. Each episode focuses on a topic which Mr. Fitzpatrick feels to be of particular importance, and joins commentary with the recreation of some of his most famous cartoons. Joseph Passonneau, the host on all sixteen of the episodes, is the Dean of the School of Architecture of Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Each episode presents not only Mr. Fitzpatrick and his cartoons, but also guests who were or are particularly involved in the issues being discussed. The 16 episodes that comprise the series were all originally recorded on kinescope, except the first episode, which was recorded on videotape.
