Description
Description
This episode examines the issue of "family values," and touches on the media's effect on them. Host Peggy Noonan discusses these topics with Barbara Dafoe Whitehead, a social historian and vice president of the Institute for American Values; novelist Anne Lamott; and Stanley Crouch, a MacArthur Fellow and author. Barbara Dafoe Whitehead argues that the foundation of family life has been neglected as people focus on private satisfaction. This adult-centered thinking has led parents to end unhappy marriages despite their actions' effect on the children. Annie Lamott discusses the struggles of being a single mother and how she depended on her family, friends and faith to help her rear her son. Stanley Crouch comments on the cultural forces of television violence and rap music, and how they influenced American families and people's views of African Americans. He advises African Americans to return to the 1950's (without the prejudicial barriers) since at that time the community had a major, positive role in shaping family values and individual aspirations.
