Description
Program Description
This hour-long program examines the life and artistry of an American whose unique talents have made him the most distinguished male dancer in the modern field. He also occupies a position as one of dance world's most important choreographers and impresarios. This multiplicity of talent forms the substance of this NET "Festival of the Arts" feature. As a dancer, Jose Limon has proved to be a technician in the highest tradition of modern dance. But technical skill is not the only basis of his appeal. There is his heroic attitude to life plus the compassion for mankind that he communicates through his dancing -- artistic points of view that form an integral part of the shaping of his dance movement. And there is visual aspect of him -- the strongly sculptured face that reflects his Mexican Indian heritage and the dignity of movement drawn from the same heritage. "The Dance Theater of Jose Limon" traces the way he developed as a dancer -- from student to soloist with the troupe of Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman in the 1930s, then as principal male dancer with his own company after World War II. Fittingly, it was Doris Humphrey, one of the pioneers of modern dance, who contributed to his rise by assuming the position of artistic director and chief choreographer for Limon's company in those postwar years. One of her creations for Limon, "Lament for Ignacio Sanchez Mejias," will be seen in excerpts on this program. The principal performance section of "The Dance Theater of Jose Limon" consists of two of the finest examples of Limon's own choreography -- "The Moor's Pavane" and "Missa Brevis." The first is a dance treatment of the familiar Othello story, using the figures of Desdemona, Iago, and Amelia, as well as the Moor himself. The technique of modern dance is featured, of course, but the forms are those of the court dances found in the music of Henry Purcell. It is a compelling blend of elegance and harsh emotion. "Missa Brevis" is set to the music of the same name by the Hungarian composer Zoltan Kodaly and shows a group of worshipers celebrating a religious service. In a moving conclusion it affirms the hope of freedom for all men. Among the members of Mr. Limon's company are Pauline Koner and Lucas Hoving, both of whom are noted choreographers and solo dancers in their own right. "The Dance Theater of Jose Limon": a 1965-66 "Festival of the Arts" presentation of National Educational Television. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
