today talks to bring peace to war torn cambodia ended in failure of talks were aimed at working out an accord between the vietnamese backed government and several resistance factions before the withdrawal of vietnamese troops next month several diplomats who participated in the talks that they expect heavy fighting in the coming months that's our news summary coming up a racial killing in new york and a special portrait of soviet leader gorbachev first tonight a killing that has gripped new york city and raise questions about the state of race relations in cities throughout the country the crime occurred in bensonhurst brooklyn a white predominantly working class neighborhood of new york funeral services
police say thirty one teenagers armed with baseball bats and at least one gun attack hawkins and his three companions thinking of hawkins income to the neighborhood to date a local girl but hawkins didn't know the girl you come to bensonhurst with his friends to look at a used car today an hour before the hawkins field to white teenagers were indicted on murder charges related to the incident for other white teenagers have been released on bail and police are still looking for the suspected gunman in the aftermath of a killing racial tensions in bensonhurst or new york city local marchers organized by civil rights groups have drawn the anger from the community what should the whole community be indicted and the wind and cordray says it adds one individually people are good people is a good community and they are not they're not racist in this community obesity
we turn now to four people with different views on the killing and the underlying racial tensions in new york and elsewhere father charles from alien assistant pastor is in dominic's roman catholic church in bensonhurst the reverend herbert daughtry pastor of the house of the lord pentecostal church in brooklyn ralph blumenthal a new york times reporter who has been covering the benson heard shooting and clarence page columnist for the chicago tribune and frequent essayist on the newshour rough blumenthal is it is it is this right that there is no explanation that naked racism for the skillet so as an effect of killing itself was involved in history we have not gotten an explanation from the police or any of the witnesses or survivors as to exactly what happened when these two groups confront each other insurgents just alone but you but so far nobody has come up with any explanation which would mitigate the charge that this was a racist killing cetera not the only thing people said is that that
he was mistaken for someone going to visit this white girl as if that would be next year is our reverend audrey how to use it i see it as a as any racial or motivated killing for several reasons number one there were racial epithets use of air in this neighborhood and that by no means in that i don't know too many other people who have characterize the entire neighborhood as racist but in this neighborhood there been other acts about a year ago we marched in the same neighborhood and two brothers the lamont brothers were attacked on them in the same neighborhood the douche about the us or go on the leaflets urging not to sell to asians and that as we have witnessed from the marches which is a kind of way of exposing
we have seen them as a mark of a well he was a new law as a battle about racism and that it seemed to me that speaks volumes to the situation former familiar this is your parish family music i think is important to get an understanding of whatever neighborhood were dealing with that is a rather insular neighborhood people know each other their networks of the families and friends and there are what we would call jerry's abuse guys not in a negative sense but rather in a sense that they hang out with each other and they have a certain territories with the neighborhood which the guard and sometimes the guards and they feel that that if they're being muzzled in upon the eu reacted by having a pool and very often a grove of other gangs so to speak within the neighborhood not this early blacks lil on this little i'm sure i write the role of those who are from it's a
twentieth avenue as opposed to thirty seven you're supposed to eat it and i believe that that one one thing you're the has to be kept in mind is that these boys and this is where we disagree with you i think never expected that that was going to happen that it was going to be killed and shot he goes empty the elements of the alleged killer of the final borat is an element which is outside of that particular jack he heard there was a brawl he entered a policy and he came and he shot the boy unbeknownst to those who were expecting a parole clarence page looking at it from chicago how do you view it from ali reckons well certainly out there are people in new york are justifiably view this as a new york problem in many ways of course it is a community based problem but it resonates across the country are incidents like this either directly or vaguely someone like it to have occurred across the country various organizations are tallied up dozens of incidents of interracial conflict of the southern
poverty law center just for one example i thought about two hundred nineteen eighty eight about half of those against blacks that rest against the jews asians are sympathizers as they categorize that homosexuals are hispanics native americans what is really depressing about this odd to me is that while we're talking about the ol mom baja lynch mob like activity i wear whatever started it whether it was a hollow those covered in turf battles were accustomed to with teenagers it die it evolved into a mob that was out hunting for somebody look black or hispanic and our values have hawkins happened to turn up the wrong place of a long time now that resonates across the country serving with blacks and other minorities are people who are as hard as they may try to avoid high crime neighborhoods and so they may try to avoid trouble are can still find themselves because of the color of their skin being in jeopardy says more than any your problem is everybody's problem how do you have uncovered than ever brought to ross county
how do you assess what is being called racist and invention well i think the reactions of some of the year the anti demonstrators accountability is pretty revealing holding of watermelons and shouting racial epithets and often people who are racist or prejudice and turns of being used interchangeably although there is a difference racism is much more ingrained they don't recognize themselves is actually refused to confront that have made it so where they do this and they hold up these terrible symbols and yet they deny that they are biased i think it shows that there are neighborhoods in the city where blacks are not welcome we've written enough about it but the us interest is a very homogeneous community is the opposite said whites are a look amid plaques overlooked on as interlopers there to do no good and there other neighborhoods like that neocons on howard beach when it was a killing of a black was chased out in case to his death because he was seeing suddenly as someone who didn't belong in a neighborhood you must've been there for some elusive purpose does that ring true to you know i would
disagree i think that the mob that was outside of the new demonstration shouting of the things they were shouting i were not indicative of the entire neighborhood they were cheered for two and fifty three hundred who were shouting i have three thousand five hundred families like large their sixth arches within the area those people who came to the mob are those who are i believe of the bassist a stratum of the neighborhood who are attracted to mob scenes and so they came and they express themselves but they are not indicative of the entire neighborhood or not mr blumenthal serve perhaps wider were deeper point that in this era a quarter of a century after the civil rights laws we're past and we thought we were moving beyond a lot of these attitudes that people are racist and i don't believe that there are racists no one wants to be labeled you know i think that's why much of the name of a video acting defensively because they don't want to be labeled racist and so what they want to do i believe it is to maintain
a place where they can live among several people as they lived amongst the real people and the point of origin that is it'll it gives the meaning to their lives anyone who is not of the neighborhood anyone who was not of the same cultural background is not his spirit and i think perhaps that's where the basis of racism comes into it content question says those that do have walked in that neighborhood or an irish american or a number of any other white ethnic group you would not have been immediately targeted i would say i think came into the neighborhood at the time of night because he felt comfortable enough to and very often they're blacks who come into the neighborhood walk around the neighborhood and there's no problems so i think you touch on a lot of races you know people get killed but this race as it does happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time that has happened to be in the neighborhood people just an understanding on the handle fear
but nobody's races when it's so clear so obvious from the television from the newspaper or what campbell calls with these persons and there words in that behavior was one in this government raises but the different kind of racism that most racist you know of course that would be movies they had a recall list of additional progress at all age and disseminate material for the neighbors all asians and how you see the care they wouldn't dare say that three races is living in howard beach judge the caucus state and how would beat he said the thing that was most distressing to him this is where michael griffin is chief of the thing that was this present him out of the thousands of letters he received not one letter expressed remorse for what had happened not one that that is distressing it is distressing because there is not going to be in a
recovery any reconciliation until there's the recognition of a problem but that is not the case in in bensonhurst i believe has got a lot of remorse and sympathy has been exposed to a chord so many people have a lot of people are in the community are outraged that some people in the community of fear of the second that's correct and that's why the community is not want to be branded because the actual flu normally want to be branded because of the reaction a small region they must come forward and other people have to come forward now and and put forth the other point of view and accountable themselves against extremists if every family pawn so if the good people are decent and i subscribe to that passage glad the doctor came the tragedy of birmingham's non would beg people that good people get another massive grab a brick wall that is necessary for evil to prevail is for good people to decide if the good people in bensonhurst would've come out last year when we marched
through the neighborhood when the lamont brothers were attacked if the good people would have sent a clear unmistakable message across that community across the city we will not tolerate this perhaps just perhaps use it would be a lie they did this in park slope park slope in brooklyn and young mad men mocking davis was attacked the whites in parks will organize themselves much to their own community denouncing bias related violence i have not heard of any of the violent incident that good people i thought that's an article i didn't tell that patel is the valley that when ahmad we went from a mortar that is always the challenge we are good decent people let them go physically elizabeth galasso that was demonstrated that the tenderness in touch with her yeah that's right and they organized a memorial service the overnight turn into something else but that they are good people when i walked in that community
i begin to give thumbs up sign v for victory sign there were people who looked out of the windows until they hand back up so i went and i imagined it meantime communicate what i was writing this a little bit and go back to clarence page and rafael blumenthal said there are parts in europe where blacks are not welcome how common is that and others in chicago and other cities across the country so i'm sort of expressing deja vu all over again there robin i've been hearing for many years that a disservice to first of all there is a fact all portrayed by community by neighborhood in our big cities and male are small towns for that matter oftentimes entire towns as we've seen in some unfortunate cases that are black people that there be reluctant to go into them day or night i bet that still exists in the nineteen eighties is truly a tragedy for which we all must die it takes some responsibility are the days of like prince's i've been hearing for years that want to buy in the communities not
bad dice not a racist neighborhood there's a few bad apples but progress of as good people but we heard that you're on the southwest side of the market park area went up among working with him the head with a brick twenty years ago of the fact that there were still experiencing this sort of neighborhood apart aged twenty years later it indicates that we can just hold these isolated incidents anymore after howard beach after our situation and benson hours after that many others we've seen and even i'm not going to discount black or white violence but that tends to be somewhat exception seems that i am a long run we do have a community based problem not that i was an old country father for mayor you told our reporter house sometimes knows something that interested me and that was that a lot of people in your neighborhood have the idea because they're fed it by the media that blacks are that crime as a black face and they think they tend to stereotype what particular young black men as either
involved in drugs or crime and if they see one that's the automatic action doesn't work you know that is that is that is the issue yes of the good people in it would could come out on force and do something symbolic but i think something sits down to substantial sri possible that a substantial because symbols can speak you know and so perhaps a gesture of grief because there is an expression of grief but the problem lies with the media if you want to do with this if i were a black pastor i would be upset that every day an atrocity story has shown in the newspapers about someone in my neighborhood every day and so you hear one day a woman throws her baby out of a second story window where is that crown heights as someone great rate's a kid on top of a building where is it jamaica or hispanic immigrants right exactly and what is happening in
fact the very day after the article raises and they have a picture on that on the front of the times showing black's black youths who were found with so many so many cases of cocaine why is it that the media is continuously century in on the black and portraying the black as someone who cannot live in society this is being fed show are you physically fit to was and the perceptions about the black community become reality you see it's in the paper now there are atrocities all over the place and why is the new centering on the black and unless it is well i would say that it's a fact that a disproportionate amount of violent crime is committed by young black youth that is a statistic and there may be many there are many reasons to explain that the disadvantaged backgrounds lack of education poverty etc that is a fact and i think that that is a perception that one cannot really discount in neighborhoods like bensonhurst what about oppression and suppression keeping women into the other part of it
in this case certainly there was no threat from his supporters of his friend so there could be no suggestion there that these kids were up to no good and that neighborhood and if there was any reason for the neighborhood to play devil's advocate here and they're bringing power plants page chicago isn't it also true that over the last couple of decades that the presence and television particularly and in the newspapers on blacks who were figures or symbols of success in american life are have become at least as frequent as serving as those who are you could be identified with clerical work you know lois ever seen some positive images coming across in the media more so we saw thirty years ago when there were for example a latino black anchors on our tv news programs to speak of but the problem is we're doing a new generation that doesn't have a sense of history art doesn't have a sense of guilt about the past all have anything on it you have like youngsters who are not
educated and ugly history of roots of these problems that so many black communities suffer a when they see our middle class black success always say is well look there go and find i'm still a working class neighborhood where they griping about and if you're not terribly really have more resentment building up i think a lot of what we're talking about here is the fact that communities are losing touch with each other well and having more dialogue and talking with each other father of a daughter usually talking about the fact that their summers has been such a concern with keeping its community intact and taking care of its internal affairs it is forgotten it's in a pluralistic society and doesn't that deal with other communities and i said i can do with him a hostel where can deal with them in a peaceful way with that this is the hawkins incident may be isolated itself whether that happens again and again that it becomes more difficult for other people were good people in the community to say i'm not racist or wash my eyes gentlemen if i i have to fight i have to interrupt we're we
have for we have used over time and reverend country rock <unk> page but he was a journalist we devote the rest of tonight's program to an unusual report soviet leaders are famously reticent about their personal lives in their margins fully fledged biographies usually don't appear until a deficit then but mikhail gorbachev unorthodox in many ways as recently permitted his story to be told that story one of the most intriguing and powerful man in the world has puzzled many students of the soviet union last winter i asked the dean of american criminologist george f kennan how he evaluated gorbachev and how he explained his emergence in the soviet system i think is a most remarkable man he has qualities that are extraordinary for anyone in his position
years of high intelligence great courage right firmness one challenge is not afraid to use all their organs of all the instruments of his power to protect his position when people threatened the years great insight into certain very fundamental untruths or what i believed to be truths about our present predicament in this world how do you explain that the soviet system which has put such a premium on conformity on safety would produce bigger picture of you know i really cannot explain the numbers of those who are along that country for a long time simply stand without explanation as to how a man were these qualities could have emerged four in a provincial party apparatus in the north caucasus i have as this question how have people in the
soviet union one thing that they said was you must remember that he was a student at the output of law at the moscow university and they told me to my surprise because i had never known in that that law school had retained certain types of teaching and training and training also in the mannerisms of the law which existed on almost no other place of illegal instruction and russia and that may have something to do with it and it is also true that he was a protege of a drop of who came down there is that many of the soviet leaders to that area for reasons of health and it and hundreds of victim of work undercover as we discover after his death again i never know it when he was alive was a highly cultured man and there was more culture and that the unknown group of song to russia than we ever
suspected we're only partial explanations and i'd known term and they're not fully add equipment to myself i think is rather a man a miracle and questions were on the mind of west german journalist gareth ruger of a r d television as he set out to trace coverage are from his beginnings what follows is an extended excerpt from ruby's report where's he from what this is history this war from a vintage weekend head of state but given the soviet union and the rest of the world know hardly anything about him this report which documents unknown facts concerning lots of orphaned history much of which has never been published but there's a lot of homeowners who only a result of russia's three thousand two hundred have been a couple of families on the mound thousand small farms there's an entirely new life even today
it's unsettling to work in the car cause the promise yeah everything's on privately owned land the life of people are doing comparison with better than most that their custom many of them point of small houses and every year on easter we really fresh flowers in the garden grove mo is a traditional lifestyle as being maintained but that was a much better today and the year's <unk> was living here many people have figured the fact that they would have survived hard times of radicalization law and poverty in relatively good condition for the commitment of commercials grandfather and his father renaud that things will get better and their native son park in moscow you know that was when the smaller and not just as part of used to do with his friends fifty years ago the vastness of the country
every minute it's an empty one hand on the one hand this means that most of the area which was once the prairie and on the other hand it means freedom ago at the pharmacy or when that myself the first one from kenya had escaped and then the owners and voted on this week of a lot of money is small olive garden chickens a painting of thirty six the money that's right within three months
with his mother's parents you spent a lot of time with his grandparents and his mother and father were working with a very respected man and the village found then chairman of the co host orange here with his mama who pledged allegiance of the soviet state all of his own free will on this left its mark on was especially close with his grandmother the senate's position however did not mean that life was easy for them if a school and above the atlas property investment group picture because i kept on crisis management of our senior do me opening ceremony of the harvest and pain and always driven factors and combine harvester has been wounded during the wall and reliable rather quiet reserved men respect this is an exemption too many wooden cross at the
graves of his grandparents here lies as a move on the village this area and the customs of mourning festival i've noticed a lot of mexicans who moved on mitigation to his father and in the village his childhood friends talk about it to appreciatively from one of the vehicles you will never came to the village when he was secretary of the district into a party when he was the leader of this great state without stopping to visit the greatest late father said again that average and he would come to the village to the people to all of that is you know that's what the people liked and they understand that is a very humane human being is very respectable is a terrific guy thank you his grandfather
rich was chairman of a collector for a long time his grandfathers and great grandfathers both of his father's mother side are among the organizers of the establishment of the soviet power and the us still remember the organization very well i was very it was in nineteen twenty nine lets you reset of their names didn't really come from a large family was beginning they would even come to a judge it was very difficult in the period of one year removed six times my older brother was also killed was persecuted for a few the reason one his mother was sick
he's a lebanese morass we want military is also making it a grave for material on top of it and if i remember correctly he didn't have boots made of raw leather how he was hacked the site so and to well you know well you don't know what else i should say i am repeating myself when he was
intelligent and had you know this is the kind of combine harvester when his father and son marshall worked in nineteen forty eight the local paper reported go wessels combine harvester was ready for harvest and i tell you're going through and he would report for assignment along with their sons so how does this tune of the ninth grade that it received the owner of the red november you're welcome there is a cost of course
initially no no i do and a little known we were so the london office of the more so says the nastiest guys in the village the village has survived hard times of the heavens above that preserve it in the proud of that different than in the implosion of a half deserted villages in the north yeah
the experiences that he had in the village here and china to lift them up and politics as venice and memory also way that russian peasants can also be a monument sexist and many cities and villages in russia memories of the second world war blue monday was occupied for six months of them in a lot of his mansion sometimes of the memorial is also must have had an influence on his ideas on foreign politics in peace as improved quality of problems with the school that he was a high school in the next small town was nineteen forty seven or fifteen years or twenty kilometers and from twice a day it became too much even for somebody who was hungry for an education about tight money whether they wanted to send to know so he rented a place near the school there were a lot of good sleep monitor to oversee a lot of money for a far less and this mosque which has since been torn down a lot of the small room with two other more
years who fixes today doolin india has long since retired like remembering their most distinguished you nisha the trial and eastern borders as we called it in those days always used to actively participating classes and was able to as of the most difficult questions and he always gave the most elaborate answers army sent the files they gave its gorbachev the school had a great influence on him of course he was a very active boy very active it always ask questions you would not as do something out of will to listen or to get his way mr bourne going to see that echo in which he didn't always consult with us of his cars and with me family years ago when there was a fight you know with children alike they fight and then they scuffle immediately he never scuffled with anybody that well he may have grabbed somebody once in
a while he wants to separate two children but he never participated in the fights himself you always tried hard to show that this was not the way to go about it and that there was another way that and he kept on trying until the boys had finally understood and then there was peace in baggy pants a violin played in dance we often had evening performances in the school feeding dance with all the girl students either in a group or by himself he was cheerful i'm thinking about when we know usually did not stand out because of anything in particular that we didn't anticipate that he would one day old the high altar but we knew that this point would make his way through life on his own in his good players moments of on the left as an o genocide mr purdum no mentos masquerade and then the commander the father of all the women teachers a beautiful boy returns away with customers just look at the total young to
know a lot of our defense because director of the archives in the us or does almost anyone else and with one exception only and them this is known as the fission first of a matter it's still at in property market because battery when it applied for admission to the university of moscow in nineteen fifty five he moved to the capital and commentary which is a condition that has been a terrorist bombing condemn the twenty years of that kind of room in which humans lived what is that that its interests in the states is there was a room number three percent remembrance of the river's nineteen thirty nine in cairo myself and the other fellow students i remember clearly because birds and my beard still below the window we didn't have a single cause there was
nothing else to a huge table were each of the sixteen of us live that if this is where we're so forcibly of this for three years the main building of the old university is located in the heart of moscow this is where generations of russia's best and said well this is when the home run out of study hall in an exclusive institute which mainly accepted those feelings when you have to fund schools receiving a good man moment of going from the problems and on those fellow students who had grown up in the big cities and intellectual ferment <unk> final four the revelers flock last for robert love who only gave a salon the nation the last minute granted an interview with the professor's they accepted him maybe because of his mentor about it meant they go they were impressed with his own size safe confident and since most of his fellow students of the office's chief editors judges all public prosecutors like reading it was a
