The Iowa School of the year presents. Why is a writer. Why does a writer is produced by radio station WSB why under a grant from the Educational Television and Radio Center in cooperation with the National Association of educational broadcasters. A day's program Martin Marprelate the secret press. In 15 88 England center ships and seamen against the mightiest Spanish fleet ever assembled the ships met off the English coast and then England was victorious. He had returned to England at the court of Queen Elizabeth. Everything was normal.
Take a listen to why this happened to the old party that Charles taught does not bless us with words to say where that gentleman will read more later. The French do know better. Bridge. I would not put up with the Frenchmen if it was the last swordsman in the world. Good taste but with a Spaniard a Spaniard rather anyone who laughed and there are probably many a question is rather Do they show their faces. Faces but not this salt. Well Clive had your rest with you practice more today. My compliments Baron as much as you please. Boyle's child but I promise lady is saying I have no intention of going to tell you. Probably Charles better is your last and the bear I would rather pin me to the wall the way. It is she your my we is it Potters. Well no one answer the knock into the
millions. Gentlemen you are cowards before the fairer sex. I shall appoint myself oh my lord. I'll second that Sarah. Tis not she is the Baron Gainsborough yet what is it. Come in and that's a royal message are you sure it's for me. For the Baron of GAINES Well I don't know why that you have only to open it. Do you suppose you think the queen the queen perhaps. Oh look at you open the sea you know. Yes of course. Well address to me of course but what does it read. Very strange indeed. Do you want another Spanish fleet of ships in the game. No the Queen has asked us to go in search for a writer of treasonous pamphlets. Well that goose it was most alarming was the queen upset about this.
If you'd only seen her she walked to the table and was there but she was there and had to wrap Charles in the pamphlet. Reason. We can stay with Charles cousin. A most wonderful table there I'm told. Good good. But we'll have to do the Queen's business as well if we can find this writer of treason if we can. Why shouldn't we. I don't say we should and I say we may not be able to. Why not. We are dealing with a clever man ma polit are police in deed. Oh is he more clever than anyone else. Is he more clever than the queen Queen is not searching for him. Well I don't quite see why we are.
After all he's only written a little and flits hardly anything at all. He was attacked by the Church of England in the oldest term he only said there's a little corruption and we all know that there is no no. But gentlemen do not put it in print. Well then he's not a gentleman. Hardly. But why hang him for it haven't you read the pamphlet. I've been so busy visiting waiting I called upon it to pay my respects before leaving I could do no less. I am a pamphlet. Well I should read it. No hurry. That's why I was there I've never heard of a mob mob within our wells that I keep that kind of a knife in me. Not even for a crowd. I'd gladly tell you gentlemen but I don't know anyone like that. Do you know a printer a printer with the printing machine. Yes someone who knows how to put type together. Surely someone in this vicinity
there is. I mean was it Jones was his name but he gave it up and went to see the very man. Did you say you know him there and knew him dead dead against this planet at least we don't waste our time. We're in a tavern. I'll bring you a tank a gentleman you want arrested it was from chasing that. Take a seat Clive will not catch him today. You know. You are Martin Marprelate. Hey you are Martin Marprelate I imagine not very you know Peter Peter Peter obviously not our man Baron the puppet but they can talk outside. Yes outside what could I do for you gentlemen either thank you sir.
Thank you. What now. Oh I don't know. Although it does appear as if the scandal is real is obviously not my president. Obviously it would make him easier to find what you suppose. Oh yes of course since he's no fool he would hardly go by its name the scum. No not at all. He says what he has to say he's only careful not to be caught. Do you defend him don't be overly humorous dear friend I am merely understanding. Besides it's quite dangerous to defend a man who attacks the bishops of England. The Queen does not share your humanness. Who attacks the bishops and tax the queen. Very right so you are disgruntled and now you know as well as I know what we shall never catch this mock letter and never laugh if you will live three more attacks have been printed since we've been looking. We don't look in the right place.
All these men and horses this is something that we have no trace of Her Majesty said the royal troop of horses. Pray walk for a sign of what you mean Charles is near as I can see it. This has caused a great deal of trouble. They know his name is from what does that have to do with these horses. Just imagine. Still we have no trade it is a national crime and since you represent the queen in the church in the church indirectly Charles me cos And since you represent them the queen.
Are you sure it wasn't her advisor on a bird. No matter who it is. And since you represent them this truth has been sent to make the matter appear impressive when it's called by way. With what information. Yes I forgot to say that we have a clue from a professional clue seller for a few crime quite respectable. That would be a change. What is it a paper merchant in London but whose ship sailed from this very point has been asked to leave so many pounds of paper here for Mr Cambridge Cambridge. What of it. Mr. Cambridge arrived and took the paper away in a way. What of that. Could he carry it on his back as to Cambridge it was seen and what of that to Sir Charles your point my point is Mr. Cambridge was recognised as Mr. Penry a known critic against the Church of England and where shall we find this head.
OK we pump neither seems to me that only one road go here are you Mr. Henry. No I'm not. Are your market. No sir I am want to grade the printer. Why did you pound on the door I have nothing secret what would you consider this summer as I use it because it's cool dry. We know you've just moved here and we know you came at night. We know that no one knows that's a printing press is here. It is not true we know it. I am wonder grave Waldegrave the printer. You are older Americans you waste your breath. I use my saw good
thrust. Why why do the Mako not. None of us are so young anymore how has that changing Martin Marprelate. He's a scholar but he stays on. Yet we've caught his printer Waldegrave admits to nothing. I am Waldegrave go printer. How do we know he's not Marprelate the wrong answer. I thought I'd mention that mentioned walked another tractors appear Clive's just joking The man has no printer. No not quite correct he may not have wanted gray but he had another printer. Indeed another and the Queen and all royal rage. But let's be fair. Shouldn't you be if you had sent all the troops. If all of England could not catch one nasty pamphleteer Are you saying he has no support of them. Oh you call the Puritans not to speak out even they well disown him yet they don't turn him in. There is some honor among Puritans don't you think I feel more than I think in this matter. Oh indeed. May I mention that my
honor is involved. I was too but you still are saying what. I haven't told you my memory of. Yes but it's true my dear baron true what's your point was simply that after all the queen feels we ought to seek out what are you saying Mark. We're. Writing. But Martin Marprelate whoever he actually was was never English history record that. The unknown writer became an interesting mystery. Heard in today's program were Don's dribbling Zull parado Dick said of Tom Keaton
and Gary Williams Harold Swanson and Fred Moore as were our studio engineers. Why is the writer is written by Floyd Horowitz and directed by Larry Walcott. This is Dave Carter speaking.
