Now when my two boys and girls to listen I love your son's wedding brings you another spawn. I know boys and girls. Today we're going to vie and find out something about a flashlight. Are you already Mr. Flash Were you good and Mrs. Light are you there too. Well good for you. You know everyone else is ready to listen and to watch Mr. Flash and Miss Light. Let's take a good look at the flashlight you have there on your table. Mr. Fly Suppose you pick it up and show everyone what it looks like. Hold it up so everyone can see it. There are all kinds of flashlights and I don't know just which kind you may have but there are some things the
same in all flashlights. Mr. Fleischer pipe the flashlight up toward the ceiling and turn on the light. Release the pin point the beam up there toward the ceiling so you won't shine it in anyone's eyes. Can you all see the beam of light as it shines on the ceiling. Good. Mr. Fleischer had only to press or move a little switch and a beam of light came out of the flashlight almost like magic in it. All right Mr. Bligh's when you turn the light off please. Now I wonder if we can look at this flashlight and show all the boys and girls in your room some things about it. Mrs. Light would you point to the parts we named While Mr. Flash holds a flashlight so everyone can see it.
Mrs. Light. Will you put your finger on the spot where the light comes out. Turn it around Mr. Fleischer so everyone can see that pop spot. What is that part made out. Well ours here in the studio is made of glass. Yours may be glass too or it may be clear plastic material one of whatever it's made we call that part of the linens and the lands of the flashlight and the lens of the flashlight cover the bulb the little electric light bulb novice light. Put your finger on the case. The outside of the flashlight. Is the case of your flashlight made of metal. What color is it. Well it doesn't make much difference does it. The case of a flashlight were almost together all the parts of the flashlight. Now there is one
more part we better show everyone. And that's the little button or switch with which we turned the light on and off. When you turn the flashlight so Miss Light can show everyone that little button. Thank you. Most everyone knows what the outside of a flashlight looks like but how many of you have ever seen the inside of a flashlight. Lou some of us do here and I expect that some of you have seen it too. But shall we look anyway. Right Mr flash. Do you know how to open the case of your flashlight. Perhaps your teacher can be a helper too and help you if you need him help. Shall we ask you to be ready if you need to help. All right go ahead Mr flash. We would like you to open the back end of the flashlight case now. Yours may be one whose And you grew or it may
open on the side with a clasp of some sort. But open the flashlight case. And I've got it open. What do you see at the end of the flashlight case down there at the bottom. Is there a spring wire in the bottom of your flashlight case. We have one here. Most often I should like to do we have a spring of some sort. What do you suppose that spring does. Do you suppose that holds the cells inside all right. No. Let the small electric cells the little battery like things slip out of the flashlight and put them on the table stand them up so they won't roll off those electric sails are sometimes called batteries. But you are scientist aren't you. And since you are scientist you're going to learn to call them electric sails.
How many electric sails are in your light. We have two here. Do you have two. You have three. Well some flashlights only have one and some may need two and some may need three. And there are really some that are even bigger than that and need more than that. Those electric sails make up a battery when they're put together and supply the electricity to light the little ball of the flashlight. Now if you've got the little electric cells standing up on the table. All right. Now when you lay the case of the flashlight down someplace so it won't roll off. All right. Now Mr. Fleischer maybe Mr. Sparks could hold it while you do something for us Mr. Fleischer Mr. Fleischer pick up one of the little cells and take a good look at it.
Are both ends of the cell just alike. Look at it look at both ends is one end flat. Is there a little post a little bump in the middle of the other end. They're not alike are they. Do you remember which and went into the flashlight case first. I wonder if you do. Well let's see if we can find out. Now listen carefully slipped the sail into the case again with a flat and first let them and wanted to time with a flat and berth. Now screw the bottom and on the case or our clothes the keys that may take a little time. Teacher I wonder if you'll help there so we can hurry a little. All right have you got to put together again. Good now will you. Push the button our turn on the light.
Get it you're in on this time. Well we'll have to try again unscrew the end take the cells out. I hope we're not going through faster you take the cells out of the flashlight case. All right now turn them around and put the little post and verse at the end that has the little bump in the center of the little post in the center put it in first this time. Put them all back in. Now screw the cap on are close up the key and now try to light your flashlight. Did it work this time. Well then you know which direction to put the flashlight cell at the end don't you. All right now let's take the cap off again. My goodness we're making you work hard today. Take the cap off and slip out the electric sails.
Stand them up on the table so they won't roll off. If you get that them all right now can you unscrew the front end of the flashlight. Now be very careful not to drop the lens or the small bulb in some flashlights the whole front end will come off in one piece. If yours does that fine we won't have time today to take the bulb out or the lens off. If it's all in one piece but you might try that after the broadcast. Right now we'd like to look down into the long tube of the flashlight case. Now if you're ready to get the front end off maybe it's hard to do unscrew the front end so that all you have left is just the case of the flashlight. Miss Sparkes be sure that things aren't rolling off the table. You take care of those when you good. Now are you ready.
Look down into the flashlight case now this is hard to do. Look inside the tube. Can you see anything in that tube that Miss Sparkes look down there too and see if she sees anything. Can you see a Dan Band of metal running down one side of that flashlight case inside. Is it attached to the button or the switch that turns on the flashlight or turned it off. What do you suppose that band of metal does. It must be there for some reason don't you think so. Miss Wright will you pick up the lens end of the flashlight please give the put the case down on the table pick up the lens and or the little flashlight bulb it gets loose. Now Mr. Flash will you stand the the little electric
cells one on top of the other and hold them. Now Miss ally every ready we have to work fast Miss. What have I been calling you. Your name is Miss Flite isn't it. All right Will you take the bulb and hold it on top of the top post of the flashlight because it touches that one when it's inside. Does it light up. No. Do you suppose that little strip of metal inside the case has something to do with helping those electric cells make the flashlight work. Would you like to talk about that after the broadcast is over. All right now let's put everything down on the table again. Put all the parts of the flashlight. Do you suppose you can put that flashlight together again so that it will work properly. Oh it isn't
easy and it's not easy to find out what makes the bulb light up. But when you talk about we haven't had time to talk about some of the other parts of the flashlight Why does the shiny ball out the little bob in the flashlight have a shiny polished cup of metal around it. We haven't talked about that. Why do we find a piece of a lens or clear glass in front of the ball. We haven't talked about that ether. Well there are lots of things that you want to talk about after the broadcast. We do think about them. Will you see if you can put the flashlight together again. Now before you put them together I suppose you look at all parts of the flashlight and see if you can decide just what each part does to help the flashlight give a good light. An electric light. When you do that.
All right. Now see if you got all the parts there why don't we call the little pieces those little round things that we put inside the flashlight to help us make electricity. What do we call them electric cells. And when we have more than one to put together what do we call it when it's put together. A battery and electric battery. You remember all those things and you try to put the flesh like together won't you. And get it together just as carefully as you can. All right but I want you. I don't know. Let's find out I'll read tonight in the studios on Ellen St. Louis motivate U.K. radio is there.
