From Northeastern University the National Information Network presents issue and inquiry. I would like to say something in the defense of even the most proud to be able to give you as much as a Navi of Nixon and as much as it did Johnson before him that is not to say that all of society it is not to say to you and to be honest it is this is not seing Copia as a whole is a heat sensor. This week on issue an inquiry Bruno Bettelheim world famous psychoanalyst and professor at the University of Chicago discussing the rich young and angry the psychology of revolution. Here is your host Joseph R. Baylor. Psychoanalyst Bruno Bettelheim who is best known for his innovative studies of child emotional development has recently turned his attention to student radicals. He has talked with some student radicals in his private practice and has observed others on the
campus of the University of Chicago where he teaches I'm director of the Sonja Shankman school for psychotic children. Recently he delivered a speech at a lecture sponsored by the associates for Human Resources of Concord Massachusetts and he presented at that time some of his theories and some of his explanations concerning the behavior of today's youth and the revolution that they embrace in opening Dr. batell hyme discusses the prerequisites needed for creating revolution in any society using Nazi Germany as his first example. What is necessary but it won't do this if you believe these are an affluent society. This is obvious because the distance is so and no one who still has a youth who boasted that was a good thing because you. Typically and right splat we won't use rust to be fobbed in Germany before Hitler. This was art so you lose. So it considered itself
highly idealistic so was revolting against an establishment say fart cheated time out of their chance to live. So it was fraudulent. Most are by old men and said you know there was a united and willing to put their bodies and sell life on the line to create what they consider to ideal society that will do a way because all the selfishness of the older generation whenever you have large number of young people affluent enough so they don't have to work as a livelihood just going to come from. When they are not yet settled in society they have the tendency to label it. It's never a majority of young people it's always a minority but it can be quite a sizable minority of young people. Dr Bennell Chaim claims that the main cause of any revolution is a search for identity he explains the difficulty young people encounter in
their quest for identity. And he shows how violence is often the byproduct of the search. So I seek excitement. So the Sikh identity. Why is that so important. Because our to his story a person's identity was to give his personal identity both deny forms of a rocky post doing for a living by using religion as a community social class in which he was born which was very exception. Define his existence is essential basis for we want to use all of us a search for identity. COMPERE But it was a simple way in which one could gain. Demonstrations of Amanda ness and of one's identity as a useful member of society. I indeed feel that our young people today have a rough time of it. What worries me most as a psychologist is that at this point in
the development of society the fairly logical POV young people seem to be trying to handle their BS and imparts US hostility. I guess and so the most primitive psychologically mechanism of all neighbors who did not have to simply deny is that same like say I stop us and I face the feelings. Selfish feelings I beset by hostility and aggression. Difficult emotions difficult to deal with as they say we are made out of pure stuff in this way aborting us which I can see it's an ominous feature but as a denial of my passion and hostility. Because you don't know such a question of violence and denial. All of this leads to the most vicious capitation of violence. Not only I but quite a few of my psychiatric friends who work with such young people that
we mocked how by denying their hostility by pretending that they are just trying to make this a better world. These people are the most hostile and violently destructive way. Destroy their parents results the smallness of guilt. As a matter of fact. So you can deny this and say say all they want to be left alone. Obviously this idea lists. So idealism extends only to their own age group so the rest might as well drop off just provide it so leave them see enough inhabitants so they don't have to wear the Mike Nichols film The Graduate is generally considered an indictment of today's adult society. DR BATTERHAM however used the film as an example of the hypocrisy of the
so-called new higher morality exalted by today's youth. Exact society now as you know Ben is a bright college graduate who returns to his wealthy period's Hollywood home and flops on his bed. There is a divide about how often the food politely dispassionately and I quote from a leftist leave us together with polite and dispassionately he declines the options. First the team by a Barbecue Society what its Barbecue Society alright but it's a barbecue society that has paid for his college education. It's a barbecue societies are to invited to be supreme in which he spends his days now let me quote again from this review in The New Republic. What is truly did it mind you did it. And see if what if question you Safin smuggle stands. That live today in our world is not we are living unless one can prove it day by
day by value set into the body he continues. Band is nice and I got my lecture. He's a healthy ascends a moralist. He wants to know the value of what he's doing now. But to his value his high moral value let him do to be set used by the wife of his father's partner. Not so bad as that but they are by were seduced by an older woman is in the best French tradition. Serves the elderly woman as a young man very well indeed. What is new is a French tradition. It was at least that it benefits but also who cares. Good luck to boss. So modern American tradition is to let oneself be seduced by an order of woman and instead of being grateful to God French man was but despises here that's a new
market stance you get something you take it and you despise the people who give it to you. That's a hammer ality actually got you see any success young man wants to be dependent. But he hasn't to accept his dependency pretense that he's being pushed around. Not to speak of what his critics didn't recognize it's a revival of the typically adolescent fantasy after being seduced by the muzzle. And once the wife of one spouse of popping up is as close as you can come to the master. I could come to the Mars in a field two years ago. So it all has changed since. Senator this we see the ability to be himself which is typically for young people of course for which I shouldn't be playing. Afterwards I've got to find some self is you as a higher morality. But most of all
when he finally said uses and Mellissa doctor of the woman with whom he was in bat say acting out of 30 percent and it's a girl acting out who are you to prevent disease. Namely that she gets her husband to a possible men's lover which is a female deeper conflict. So this is a habit I lity But how does he gets a girl by chasing after her is a conductive book is probably to society files and it's given him and yet not the least prompt to accept. You see when I was a young man we also felt like you're voting against our parents but our morality at least that we try out that we shouldn't take any money as a gift sponsor it was a.. Higher Morality. It was that a more intelligent it was another less than to vote like all of us but it is
kept in a fashion our hands clean of the despised money. I think at least you can do while disturbed by today's young revolutionaries. DR BATTERHAM was equally critical of their parents parents who he feels have raised their alienated children via a double standard. This is able to use is of course exactly what their parents deserve. I'm speaking about white middle class intelligent use wasn't leaders of the school. I'm not talking about a phone you know. If you're against the war and you want to demonstrate against it. But I means to say I'm talking about it. You voting to lead us. I'm not talking about the young people who is getting excited with what's gone PC for adults or society. Mistakes. I don't listen to people it was the wave of the future. Some instinctual tendencies such as hostility. I still repress this
before but. As a side effect or to a discharge without any intervening thought. But national control of course it makes no sense at all it is a major source of the youngsters insistence that our society doesn't make any sense because the decision I got to the press about not to have got to this judge are not based on the interest of the child but as I suggest that on the convenience of and this is valid that parents fatal errors lie and say this is what outrageous this generation that is instinctual pleasure was not given to the child so that you would enjoy life more because these pads are so busy to tell their children how wrong the society is so that no type possibly could enjoy anything in it it was a bride to the children. So if people would become more proficient and effective exactly as I mentioned already before good reasons and for
youngsters what up. To make a fuss of permissiveness they ask for everything without any sense of obligation to do anything to gain it. Now when I see subsidies we are students and washed and unkempt of course nothing I see here is too for I cannot help thinking there goes another youngster who as an infant was practically scrubbed out of existence by spare hands is a neighbor of good hygiene and loving care. And look at the amount of press on here do so demonstrate it. How's it a vote against parents who tore times they could dress alike provided they came out looking exactly as the parents what exactly is it better parents Pat and not the child's convenience. Then I'll be just at Halloween and I wasn't mad at what Halloween used to be like turning over all powers US displacing
Princess plane travel as it's too inconvenient. Father says so we make a dress a party out of it and collect for UNICEF. Nothing against UNICEF but why on Halloween. We will pause here to let our audience around the country know that they are listening to the world famous psychoanalyst and professor of the University of Chicago. Oh no not a line I talk about all the time is speaking at a lecture series sponsored by the associates for Human Resources of Concord Massachusetts. His subject line the psychology of revolution. Dr. battle Himes suggestion that if not today's Youth in Revolt are plagued by a self-hate complex and a complex that drives some students almost to the point of suicide. DR BATTERHAM explains that the dependency forced upon young students by our educational system allows our young people to remain isolated from the adult world
for 20 years or more in better times opinion. The commitment that our young students give to such dictatorial leaders as Mao Tse-Tung and the late ho Chih min are reflections of nothing more than a deep seated cry for discipline from the outside. Not as a distinct thing it is that despite all that you know the Dixons hoots. So it is extremely stuck up in Moscow it is all the behavior he said to himself and no society at all of goods. Now I would like to say something in the defense of even the most valid to be able to use as much as an hour of it Nixon and as much as he hated Johnson before him and as much as I hate all of society and is about to say to universities This is nothing compared to the how they hate themselves and it is a desperate maneuver to project yourself in the outside and to fight itself.
I have not yet met but who was not deeply deeply beset by self-hatred. It's the most extremist ones. Obvious suicidally it's a little early. See to be distraught since this does work and for men like me means that there are people in desperate need of kind of business I do not mean J. I hope your distance in desperate need of help. I sing so moderately both of us can only be understood by the educational system that tries to keep her dependent for some 20 years of sellout This is degrading. This is inhuman and no society that has ever typed it before you know it societies the vast majority of the population will assume
is education by the age of 16. A very small incredibly small percentage of the society went on to say education for another six or maybe seven years never beyond 21 or 22. Now we scatter at school it has become 25 quid in medicine in other fields up to 30. This is absolutely ridiculous. Think of it so 30 was the life expectancy of human beings just a short while ago. This tag to keep our geography independency which was naturally must due to a negative reaction so being kept or depended educationally. Only can we still see up his independence but he will sit by and to stand up in the style of living of the US and of sexual behavior and since his very collides head in with a friend of contradictions that in my opinion provokes student abroad
because deep down you know suicide empty stands us by making your sort of self determination bred to be economically sustained by society against virtually Boyd's abase parents denies his independence and citrusy in apologies is there going to be our city. It's very reasonable to me to understand why he lashes out at the university. Also it's obvious that a university conies and civil war dismantle the military industrial complex or Chief or any individual it's a personal independence is he naturally craves. But consciously the amount freedom and participation unconsciously is a deep commitment of these Yardley students to such leaders as met Mauer or to mean the most dictatorial of our top talent and their dreams. So just a desperate need for contorts from the outside because they know
without it they cannot bring order into the killers says another reason. Valuable use use chooses Castro and not a particular caregiver for a few of us because it's over meant to appeal to the man who leaves the city culture and comes out into the wilderness. It's the same what a generation ago was never meant to cause a cobbler and so west the man who denied City fight society and lamented for seeming independence it shows how little they have to lay out on the child to the identifications which are kid culture heroes and how deeply they have accepted the X ideals of maturity in our time. Those of the scientists so his work and his discoveries really changes the world. Or those political leaders who improve industrial society a tad to do
so. He hasn't tried to destroy my escape. Both Castro and Cuba they present an image of individual man living a primitive life outside of a society. You facts such as it's a police machine eat they extort because it is modern technology they feel that robs them of the chance to be a real star to be a real man that can give our the truth a crack such quixotic battle and certain defeat was a pool to mask iPods attributes of the source noble savage. So as you know this desperately poor souls to be take care giver. Because sailing outside as a side of course the poor always will reject because the poor
were nothing more than all of the advantages that only modern mass technologically industrial society can provide. But since he's young man evolves and Medicaid has nicely taken care of first you intensive business out of the pocket book of the parents you know to live in the diary seems awfully go mad because they don't know anything about the topic to disease. The police have been looked upon by today's youth as an arm of the establishment. Indeed almost as a domestic military organization our law enforcement agencies have been examined by a more critical public I sense they violent Democratic National Convention in Chicago in 1968. DR BATTERHAM compares today's clashes between police and young people with other confrontations out on the times between the law and the young of other generations. Now the last sense Highfather police since types remember
that that was taken for granted because boys will be boys but now they claim to do it other feeling of motherhood super Yalit. And that is a good system. Simp. Acetic attention of all the editors or radio TV stations it's not on adolescent body. You support essentially tied since times immemorial as I said since the days of Catalina. This is true at least a good vocation of idiology which has very little to do with it. He said was that I did buy into the Feds having outlined the problem as viewed through the eyes of a Psychologist Dr. Ben Haim points to a few areas in which we can make corrections to help bridge the growing cause of alienation between today's youth and what has come to be known as the establishment of immediate attention he suggests must be given to those who by means of drugs or self exile have dropped out of society. These people must be effectively integrated back into a useful position in society for the benefit
of everyone. First I see all too many who now go to college a little business to be there. Many of them would be much better off with a higher level of education in the professions and the services preferably close to doing to be of course set. Main complaint of use is that nobody needs that. This therefore feels upset parasites of society and everybody comes to hate a society when he thinks he is a parasite in here we should not be a buffer Dowding from the communistic countries. Where are the studies combined with will be to the factory or as a field particularly into the service occupations. I believe this is a much better management for our young people. So simply to go to college and waste your time. I think young people and old people are till there's a heck of a lot to go on in this society that could be improved but it could
be proved only some hard work. There's no Arsenal reason why our young people couldn't spread let's say two years of sellers working the poor slums to improve our schools to clean up our part of it is to be a major sport was they would really feel so to do something of importance. It's also Zend want to go to college I think they built it so it should be publicly maintains. Now I same Narva SA who had subsided so much so at ease I have to drop out into nothingness. So Alice Deal was always Well ours was the tariff to explode export society so they won't have to explode themselves. This need our attention most need
our most considerate and most devoted care so that we can regain the useful life in society for their benefit and society spread but I believe it's cut to amount to concentrate on these few I think it's about all the attention that the present man for example get is they want to play havoc on the streets let's have a say. And if it gets too bad suppose police take care. Let's not be so much attention to these few. That's a house of our apartment. Let's try to arrange for meaningful education and education each years ago over the top so you could do more important things out in life and do it responsibly. Doing something really meaningful in society something worthwhile to improving society and none to destroy. Thank you thank
you. Those of you in the audience who follow this series great to read are probably aware that issue an inquiry has discussed today's youthful revolution with a sociologist Dr. Margaret Mead a politician Congressman Adam Clayton Powell a journalist William F. Buckley and a young black leader. Julian Bond I think those listening in the past 30 minutes would agree that psychoanalyst Bruno Bettelheim has provided us with a still another perspective a much needed perspective on the young in revolt. Northeastern University has brought you Bruno Bettelheim berthing a psychoanalyst and professor at the University of Chicago discussing the rich young and angry the psychology revolution. Now the news and opinions expressed on the preceding program were not necessarily those of Northeastern University or this nation.
