Mr. President Mrs. Kennedy Mr. Vice President Mr. Speaker your Excellency's ambasador brode CEO and Professor Martino Secretary Rusk Senate up-I story archbishop of boyo members of the honorary committee ladies and gentlemen it is a great honor for me to have been singled out by my colleagues on the American honorary committee to be the chairman of this historic event. It is my pleasure to welcome you. It is of particular significance for me since I came to this country as an immigrant from Italy at the tender age of nine little guides
dreamed then that someday this immigrant boy would preside at a celebration of this sort in Washington where the president and other great leaders of this nation would gather to pay tribute to my ancestral homeland on the centennial anniversary of its unification. As a single strong nation I am deeply grateful this morning as never before. To this wonderful country of ours. For the only limited opportunities which I and millions of other Americans have attacked in extraction have received. This is a feeling which only immigrants and the children number of immigrants can fully appreciate. The president of the United States has played a significant role in the celebrations. I have had the honor and the privilege to know the president ever since I first came to Congress in January of 1951 when I served with him in the House of Representatives. I remember the kindly guidance he gave me then
and I shall never forget is encouraging assistance on several projects which I proposed to the Congress in those days. This is our situation continued I asked So after you had moved over to the United States Senate and it is best exemplified by the fact that after I had introduced a resolution on the centennial observance of attacks on unification and brought it to the attention of Mr Kennedy he immediately introduced it in the Senate. Just a brief remark made by Mr Kennedy at that time. That's very significant. And I quote the con current resolution expresses our pleasure in receiving the invitation to participate in the observance and testifies to robbe admiration for the contributions this great nation has made to our common ideals of freedom and independence. It was fitting and proper that we recognize in this fashion the progress and achievements of the people of Italy during the past century unquote. During the ascent time or decade that I
have been privileged to know Mr. Kennedy I have always found him to be an admirer of Italy and I was achieved in the annals of culture and civilization. Likewise he has a keen appreciation of the contributions of Americans of a tired ascent towards the upbuilding of America and its way of life it is to a certain extent an irony of history that as it really was reborn as a united nation the United States was on the threshold of facing its greatest test for survival. As the guns were stilled in Italy and Garibaldi was going back to his beloved island the proprietor with a bag of bean seeds on his shoulder the guns of Fort Sumter on the side of the Atlantic were rumbling please resurging mento which means rebirth as a nation was being accomplished. And speaking of Garibaldi I take particular pleasure in greeting here this morning. The grandson of that great patriotic
general NCO Garibaldi and I saw his granddad at Mrs. Jones subpoena. Zillah looked up grandchildren of God about doing what I please right at this moment. Today. Today there exists strong bonds of friendship between the United States and Italy. The bonds joining our two nations in my estimation strong and deepening though is resulting from a military pact or an economic program that not a bonds of faith and confidence in one another of mutual respect and understanding between two great peoples of genuine friendship and reciprocal contributions. The bridge of understanding between the people of the United States and the people of it
was not constructed overnight. It is a process which is at least as old as the United States. And in fact goes back to our earliest days when small but significant numbers of attachments drawn in the waves of early explorers and settlers who cling to the show there and succeeding generations of attacking immigrants who settled in this land. I have made lasting contributions to our American heritage over the long centuries. The imprint of the contributions on American life and civilization is visible all around us. We'll never ladies and gentlemen in a crucial time in the annals of human affairs which requires utmost unity in the ranks of the free world the future survival of democratic America and the whole free world depends in large measure on reinforcing our bonds of cooperation with nations like Italy and on the creation of working
partnerships with such nations in every endeavor which could serve the best interests of mankind. It has not been made us but out in detail how this partnership between our two nations is to be created. Nor is most the time and the place to do so so far is it merely to indicate that we have the beginnings of it in several ways. The fact that at least had been willing to give as much as she receives the fact that at least was made available to us areas for the establishment of military bases at least significant at least to teache position in the Mediterranean relation to Europe Africa and the Middle East and at least ancestral ties in Latin America. Partnership can be extended and deepened in other ways through many new ideas and bold action. Instead of working alone in certain areas where our help has been misunderstood that doesn't invite the
participation of partnership nations like Italy. If such participation would bring about better understanding and more fruitful results the possibilities are long limited. This too may in time be a new frontier in our international relations. It is that only fitting and proper that we choose this occasion to really dedicated ourselves to the same ideas which triumphed over 100 years ago in this era of the new frontin let us in the words of our beloved President prior that the future years will prove to be the years one that I would tell him in one America. Together with a strong and united Atlee and a free world moved again. I thank you very much. I was. Many diplomats have come to Washington
but few with the capacity for understanding the position of America and world affairs and the importance of United States Italian cooperation as the gentleman always on next speaker for several years as he has represented at least in our nation's capital with great distinction. I have come to know him as a very amiable diplomat a great friend of America a most congenial host and a sincere personal friend. He has a distinguished jurist of at least one the deputy prime minister of Italy and a former Taliban ambassador to the Court of St. James and to the US as are ladies and gentlemen as Excellency the ambassador of it me to the United States not only our branch here. My mama.
Thank you very much Mr. President Mrs. Kennedy. Mr. Vice President Mr. Speaker your Excellence is not in Gen. i thank very much the chairman of the honorary Committee Congressman Ortiz kind of introduction I am happy to have my said in the name of the Kenyan government to his to welcome all of our own about and distinguished guests in particular that I would like to explain might be petty and get you depressed and of United States and to Mrs. Kennedy for that presence here. That understanding of the importance of this solemn the occasion and all that spiritual significance in American Century will be propound me appreciate it buddy or anything both at home and abroad. May our side not as great party dependency out of my excellent critique and pen of the dean of the diplomatic corps.
The ambassador of Nicaragua as bad as that a bar ambassador minister and shows that I have a part in country. It gives no now my high privilege to read the special messages sent for these occasion to the chairman of the American honorary committee by the president and by the prime minister of the Republic of internet I thing they eloquently x. But defeating barbarity Kenyan people Saturday should not need to add any of my messages by Dione a better job on me grumpy president of the Republic of meeting Mr Chairman I am happy to read that through your copy of the good wishes and greetings of the Kenyan people as well as my own to the American Committee put Italians and Kenyon and to all those Americans and Italians who happened to be paid which continues in Khujand into celebration over on
American soil of this day which has such unlucky significance. Forty three of my country. I expressed my gratitude particularly to the president of the United States West consented to attend the ceremony as well as to the members of Congress the governor of the Mayo UK should not encourage our institutions the public and private officials the numinous come from all over America who joined in commemorating our anniversary. A great American nation which has such a high sense of liberty. I called Niger independence that hundred years ago led to the unity of the people are the same yearning for independence which led to a dot then rebuilt being paid in America to our a document doe whose anybody is being celebrated throughout Italy with great solemnity is a new expression of the spirit which increasingly binds the people of
our two countries. In dad that I mean a good un vote now and you give your child the bad use of it. I defame time beat up services which unite Americans and Kalyan underscore those sentiments of competent friendship which opened up many years ago to the contributions of a Kenyan who live in United. They please accept me the chairman the gratitude of the Italian people and all of my said and kindly come by it to all of those who in response to the committee's appeal out today celebrating the joy of our national unity signed. My. Message by Dion of about I mean to me but I mean to accompany President of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Italy Mr. Chairman we need 30 I'm
deeply moved by the thought that a mob 16 for the third time in a foreign country the centennial of the unification of Italy would be upset in the city of Washington. It gives a height of significance that United States who is I wouldn't. History is bad the pundit effect a pretty dumb and a pen of independence so I promptly realized the import of that loan and that I'm going to do that do we can unity 100 years ago to try and stop it through the deep believe all our people the sacrifice and martyrdom of the bay the able and patron of the leader. I believe the reason for these underspending lies in the similarity of what he taught he commends in a common cause but are there for the same goals in the active participation of Americans and Italians in the development above country. Our deeds in the hearts of the people of the United States the memory of the
when did you weaken the world and the friendship or stop it. We can never die. The way American participation in the observance of I was in Kenya at too many ties already existing between our two countries and your bones which strengthened their determination to put fish into the pain of the common ideals of the two nations. I am that approach are extremely happy to combat a good greetings and the appreciation of the Kenyan government as well as my person a thing to you Mr. Chairman to the American Committee Kenyans and Kenyans and do our job. American and Italian who joined in the observance of the solemn duty in us and I wish particularly to extend might get eight full respect to the president of the United States who basically consented to on out this ceremony with ease but I have been to the diplomatic corps the members of Congress to the governor to the mayors through the various institutions committees in personality that in Washington and all of America
are celebrating Aleph and Kenya. I am happy to express my heartfelt thanks and those of the Kenyan government who then signed. I mean today from back. My. Ladies and gentleman introducing our most honored guest. May I borrow from our great speaker of the House of Representatives. I have the great pleasure the highest privilege and the distinguished honor of presenting to you the president of the United States. Congressman and recommend by President
Reagan and Bata lucky guy a pano secretary so the purgatory thing with members of Congress and members of ambassadors Ladies and Gentleman many a better way here today and not to a talian by blotto by Bernd. But I think that we are having more than a passing interest in that anniversary. All of us that a lot of sense are beneficiaries of the Italian experience. It is an extraordinary fact of history that so much of what we are and so much of what we believe edits are going to lift us. Spirit land stretching into the Mediterranean in a great sense that we like to preserve today at its origin in Italy and earlier than that in Greece so that it
is an aunt to a president of the United States to participate in this most important occasion in the life of a friendly country. The Republic of Italy in addition to it is one of the strange facts of history that this country about which is important to Western civilization was opened up birthed by a daring feat of navigation of an Italian Christopher Columbus. And yet this country was nearly a century old when the modern Italy began. So we have the only the new are bound together and inextricably linked. Italy and the United States past present and we believe future. The research of men which gave birth to moderately like the American
Revolution which led to the birth of our country was a reawakening of the most deeply held ideals of Western civilization. The desire for freedom the protection of the rights of the individual. As the doctor said the state exists for the protection of those rights and those rights do not come to us because of the generosity of the state. This concept which originated in Greece and Italy I think it been a most important factor in the development of our own country here in the United States. And it is a source of satisfaction to watch that those who built modern Iffley receive part of their inspiration from our experience here in the United States as we had earlier received part of our inspiration from an older Italy. There magnetically is only a cent. I own the culture and the history of the Italian peninsula stretches back over two millennia from the banks of the
tired by their own Western civilization as we know it. A civilization whose traditions and spiritual values give great significance to Western life as we find it in Western Europe and in the Atlantic community. And to this historic Ron of Italian civilization has been added the strengthening in the life of this country of millions of a tie ins who came here to build their homes and who have been valued citizens and many of their most distinguished sons sit on this platform today. These ancient ties between the people of Italy and the people of the United States have never been stronger than they are today. And I've never been in greater peril. The story of post-war actually is a story of determination and of courage in the face of a huge and difficult task. The Italian people have rebuilt a worked on economy a nation plane and played a vital
part in developing the economic integration of Western Europe. Surely the most inspiring experience of the post-war era in Italy has advanced the welfare of our own people. Bringing them hope for a better life. And she has played a significant role in the defense of the West as we come to this great anniversary. In 1961 we realize that once again new and powerful forces have the region which challenge the concepts upon which yet again the United States have been founded. If we are to meet this new challenge we if me and the United States must demonstrate to our own people and to a watching world as we set out on a most conspicuous stage that man acting in the tradition of Mazzini and Kevon and Garibaldi
and Lincoln and Washington can breast best bring man a richer and full a life. This is the task of the New Rich sought to mentor a new reawakening of man's ancient aspirations of freedom and for progress until the torch lit in ancient Tauren one century ago guides the struggles of man every way and if in the United States in the world around us. But. You have been present at a ceremony honoring the centennial of Italian unification 1861 to 1961 concluding with an address by President John F. Kennedy. The sound of money was highlighted by the presence of Italy's most distinguished representatives to this country and the United Nations and by
United States governors and congressmen of Italian descent. The program was recorded in Washington especially for distribution by the National Association of educational broadcasters program arranger was old Leonard press production by the University of Michigan Broadcasting Service.
