Exploring the child's world. The AS. The s the OS OS the end as teachers we know the children have to study. We should be equally convinced the children also have to be studied if they're to be helped to grow in areas of mental emotional social and spiritual maturity. They say that if it are learned by fiddling it is equally true that one prophet spams. Having a good fiddler and being directed by him in a sense a boy becomes what he sees around him. It is possible but very difficult to resist the influence of environment if the environment is strong persuasive and long standing. Changing the environment cannot be expected to work wonders. But if the environment is poisonous there is no alternative to creating an emergency evacuation. The boy in the interview that follows has lived in a series of different environments. It appears that he gets progressively worse with each change of living
quarters. What is the answer. What should be done with a boy like Harry. Frankly we do not know at this moment. It would seem that any help he gets is going to have to operate like medication. It is not the medication that cures medication is an enabling device that allows the body to cure itself. At this point we are trying to find out what kind of boy Harry is and what kind of boy he feels he is. Then we will know what to suggest or recommend a social and psychological medication. Even then unfortunately we cannot guarantee success. Even in terms of minimum social adjustment for much of this depends not on the remedy but on the boy himself. Here then to conclude Harry's story is Father Duffy. Harry looks on life as a threatening and perilous contest. He did not realize this however until it was pointed out to him. When the word affection was introduced Harry didn't seem to know the meaning of the word. This I think is very significant in any analysis of such a young boy he was able to express his
feeling of liking for his mother but he's embarrassed when she kisses him in the presence of his young boyfriends. He doesn't understand why his father doesn't like his mother. In the interview Harry is helped to express his resentment over his father's new wife and his mother's new boyfriend. He wouldn't like to have his mother marry this old man. In fact he would not want his mother to marry anyone for he hopes that his parents will get back together again. But that too looks hopeless to him at this point. Moroccan economy says it might be pretty frightening sometimes that army has been in Iraq most of the. Iraq war. When I used to live never used to eat I think it made us fight. Once every six or seven months. But before we go to trial things happened they were always pre-plea towering over
going to hurt you or kill you. And you know when you have problems or when you have worries when you talk when talking to a room you could actually go literary because I want to tell my mother everything I do. Which is listen if you listen I can I get in trouble. I like to tell her I like I can write the next morning I can hear New York police station wants. You know just for questioning in there. Before I had before I used to be allowed in at 10:00 10:30 on again when I was over 10:30 but I used to only be locked on my 31 are I still running around throwing snowballs at people. Not rough and too bad you know pretty innocent stuff. We reached the hawk truck just about the
worst thing I ever learned it was dangerous and. I don't mean you look for I mean in terms of it's things harmful things like. That while for a gang very much stuff that they want to do to get in trouble. Ryan never used to store thought can lift it. Before we used to just stay up see him to start time. Roy used to throw darts and she began stuff we're used to you know going on a woods and shoot rabbits you never quite know. And you know we should just shoot at them and I don't share action. And back in Britain want your car bombs. Her again in early still a Russian ever got in trouble. But you love with him and you control. I'm gonna trouble would him not big trouble white people used
to have our US and already you know. We used. To. Throw. Around and. Do little stuff like get. Something to change away from the monotony of the drab house drive neighborhood reach the Mike Leach go go carts like you know soapbox times in drive and watch a big jump on in front of me tell me you can pick me up. So I was with can you not one. Thank you. Not stand up to the kid. Kid was what 17 just happened. I stood up kill him a shyster hit number cannot be done so can he be 16 but he's smart. I think it's Tracy but the only way I could start passion I mean not clear are so he picked up a broom him in the head and then we started out that my ash leapt up in the east. It was heard about
earlier about we had a painful doctor bill a couple stitches the kid had to get it was the kid's fraught you know. I. Want to feel like it. You know we're going. I ain't strong but yeah. Well that's all happen. We got scared of Ed. And I think strong. Well we've been pretty much alone. Your mother works and she's away and then the rest are not very they don't. My grandmother she always backs me up. She gets I just when I used to go away and schools that she would want to got me a more I would probably still be in government and I'm. Not quite You're her favorite. Like my mother. Well she we for our stars do it right now she's home when I get home from school. But you know before I let my grandma used to be home
my mother didn't get him to what nine an aunt. And my grandma leashed always. You know oh I used to command a nice pink bath and go to bed net. She used to get me a new moon and she always did stuff like it. You mother give you know her time here now she does she's thing you know she has to have to work on in the afternoon and not be done. And I barely 10 o'clock show she used to be off Saturdays and Sundays. But sometimes she'd come home but eight o'clock. And she just always give me a lot of time and she came home tired. Yeah she was on the stand. Now she never cry. She gave you enough attention. How about affection. We don't
love you like you have. Which And she when she used to work got told what kind of car she wished to hop Kamar and then asked me if our slate knew not and she stars bring me a glass of water on the net. She stopped for me. She got me out of a lot of trouble. Want to show you she like you because you can I can see the stars first midnight and I'm like that. Wow. You think you're too big for that too big for that. And Barack was right when I got one of my friends wait for me to go out. And she says I ask you for a kiss but you know I feel I guess. It is a sin and she would do that from your friends that would be me. Yeah. But you wouldn't mind if you were alone. Because she's your mother.
Yeah she is right or she's. After all she's not modern you know. Ever wonder why your dad didn't likers much you did. But I would never ever concerned if your theory think about. I. Wonder why he didn't. You see like one time. He asked that she die so she can't she told him and she got divorced from gambling. I don't gamble now. Maybe she'd have him back if he gave up gambling that's why she left. He's remarried. I was sitting in. And he just married she's about twenty four twenty five. SHE Oh my will she's pretty you're not so you know
I don't like her too much. So Casey never did NOT to me and say you don't like your your father's wife you don't like your mother's boyfriend Mr Gamble's and you're frightening sometimes when I get mad right. When he never came in the house I told my mother he came in her ass about him. I never did but you know I just don't like other men. US when your mother. You know why I want Mike in his name. Maybe he's another threat to you maybe. Thank you Mother way. She will not ever get married. Got better. Ranch. But you wouldn't mind if you married somebody you want to get married so I think that's why you don't like him. You would like any man it was kind of you might
That's right. And it's understandable to let you think nobody would. But that's what makes you feel so silly that you like to squash him or kill him or beat him up or not. I would like to kill watch a strike. He she or people who are strong not to charlatans who have been in about 15. When he started his car I got a lot of money but no car. I like it it's a nice car but. You never tell me what you want. I like John. I just like trucks ever since I was little and anything with a mile per hour and I was cycles. But maybe if you had been thrown in with somebody that it was a doctor maybe like to be back.
I don't think I'd like to be a doctor. I get sick if I had to catch someone's Hello thanks to him or something. Maybe something. Very like to be away. Like tar when we're using up stairs on top what cats are upstairs. There's just one little coward. I know I'm stronger than him. You know the carob tree brought on I what they have against the most right people with they just try to start trouble. And Ronnie punched me in a lip right here. Siri Calvin and the when and what about Mr.
Or anyone I want I want pushed him and he punched me in a face again. So I just hear them right here just so I won't try to slip a little bit on one of the see how the kid knew how to fight so good he could beat me cuz she's a lot stronger than me but you know he just the ground is right and that I'm a good fighter but. I let him get one. Usually when I you know. I have a pretty rough kids and sometimes when I get in fights I. Find on my right. Could you go with your pretty bad bunch. What do they do. Played chorus in them and with the time I'm telling my nieces persons. I never did that that's one thing I know when and what up front throw dogs off bridges or not right now animals to get hurt.
Catch that. It was one ride through the through OK and English. It is like going to court are so I don't push them. They can get hurt. Kids are low for sure. I can imagine. Well after what he does when I'm there. Anything would frighten me. Don't believe everything. And I guess you don't like girls they all got girlfriends tries to have a girlfriend but I never want to go. You know why. Like my mother not my aunt but my dad sent me fifty bucks for my birthday to buy some clothes and they send me proper models. But there were five models and you
know right what the money they're saying and everything and I get so much money go into buying a thing for your car. Like the by products will result in even more of these things if I was looking at that yourself. You're in and that she was a little bit like over when she came over as a member of the house. My my my own and I think that I was in there you know. Either you were on here. Which I have final or probably the lawyers. I've got a pretty good chance you might.
You know maybe his wife get along with the city. Thing. She got me. OK. I got used to her. She liked me I replaced my dad. Before. My dad was driving. Some guys were from the Army base star running Army tracks and I were drunk and I hit my dad's car smashed. You know how having one instruction is curable. Everyone thought he was there that they finally find out it was stolen and he's been in a couple wrecks for not you know I'm not the only serious one I.
Know. You think of anything more about the things that happen to you when a little besides the barge and flown down the steps and they grab for this car. Oh I've changed a lot when I was little I used to get on well you were not on the track stuck right a Berber arena. In which to talk to our watchman diner in which the ride on cabooses. You know usually you know when you don't go far in my plate need on your own Christmas vacation rafters phone would talk when I'm in there. I remember once they gave Harley isn't human to back and he almost died on it. So he could have been too low and we thought it was about six Gees to take me everywhere with them. You know we should this was about the time he was getting in trouble. Who wouldn't know this before I got to this was. About two years before we start getting in trouble and needs to get
close. I used to run everything and things kind of thing he got when he'd get paid peon subjects like plants. Same kind of shirt. Do you still wish to go. I knew a lot of the Russians and a rare on everything. You know we used to talk to them and look around on the engines and that ride made me up and dance of tracks with them or they just were still a little bit you know. He knew them on time before. And I wanted to run to win. When the learn there and what was the most fun you ever had what was the happiest time you remember. My mother got married. She she was remarried twice. You know she got divorced from my dad and she got married again and she got the worst again I don't know why. You know I was struck that was a joke that I had
never even if I was going to stay married I won't get married. And what the running there was just a big rock. They run a different when you know they had this big some kind of a rack you know right powered stuff on. I mean to arms climb up that and then they must of used a place for the thing don't ever think oh markers thrown out or wrongly was or have them on from there. That wasn't the most fun I ever had though. How long that marriage last. Did you meet him. Actually it was just left. 1 5 6 1 5. I think he got married which you know I think it was he like a father. Yeah I was like oh no we think you should want my sky. I suspect number two you know. What what what why do you think parents should be what kind of grades would you like to have.
Become and what kind of parent would you like to be. Get married when I die I'm going to run along people down the road there when I grow up you know is that what my wife really timing with is that what wife Hillary has been told to do. And I like you think you know my mother tells me what to do. I listen to her sometimes. Did you give her a hard time when she said if you were a little bit nicer you could stay. You could say well why didn't you say she was standing there. She told me we should never keep me warm for her. So I ran away. She got rather than fight on my don't kill. That's what marshmallows with that especially her she got paid are kind of pills. She's nervous and I've seen you drink or now she helps run.
She just takes his pills for nerves are you proud of her nerve trouble. Why do you think maybe that's where your dad lives. Now because he was very nervous. No she must not listen to you once you start to get nervous or when I SHOULD I was going to jump off a roof. We weren't going to I was going to. If anyone came back to get me that then they finally said I want you gone back to school and they took me back to school. The boarding school we know where I would have done well. He's worked up here in Turkey by the hand. You were young. Now you were saying that he wasn't too far along but I just thought was this building was pretty far. How we handle him. When I was going to do is jump over to my neighbor's protrudes but in a time this was
Carolyn Be jabers I'm your mother. Yeah and I was going to you know their parents can only do what my mom Skinner. Yeah that's what I wanted that they stopped. So I won't take me back at school and I was going to hang jumped that because it wasn't very high and then get out of there because like trap me I'm on that roof and just the women and they are in school you know what we always have been in. We're grateful to sit down and you can't. You couldn't you never felt like it. You think they might laugh at you again. You're one type anyway. I got to talk to people while some are like no I'm talking to the I'm talking to you but you know there. Are
nothing there but usually when I'm outside you know. I always talk to kids and that we always talk and that you don't know why. I sometimes talk to my grandpa last time with him because I think when you're with it it is very very shallow kind of conversation. You're mostly try to tell him what you like and what you want to do and I try to tell you what they like to listen to the other one. But once in a while you have some serious serious things that occur to you in your life. Somebody who will listen to her for I'm talking to people as a PlayStation or someone to pick me up. Do you think I'm being a policeman I know when I don't want to and
from what I heard kids say it cops are never want to be what you think actually. I now are dark that night. If you're if you need them. But why cops. Thanks a sure for every little thing you do like stand on them and you know you should hear what each stand on the corner and you know they come on banking just a cormorant corner and I do say no those kids you know have 20 going. We did that for one cop once who was in a little rally you know between two buildings and we don't know Corporal up the line and there was one cop is fact finish to the original Armstrong and that start having would come charging Niall and knocked him down it was a laugh and there was laughter I don't know where he was then Winstock turn back. I suppose you could talk to the police of the whole state what would you
tell. Don't be like OK let me get my car. Right now you're ready to get out and run after you you know like a neuron active. Sometimes they run after us. There was one. He's pretty fast I'd say in our past but never to what you think they are still going to have an emergency you can do you know how to transfer you could always depend. They're pretty nice right. I know them not by men you know just by sight. What can we learn from this interview with Harry. First I feel he exemplifies what I like to call recreating the black sheep. The boy is becoming just like an uncle of his who was a black sheep of the previous generation. This sort of thing is almost unavoidable when there is no father and when two
males are thrown together as though they were father and son. Another interesting item I felt was the idea of the Screaming Females in Harry's immediate environment. Harry's picture of all women is drawn from the women with whom he is familiar. It's not a very pleasant picture. So this 13 year old boy is not going to get married at all because the women he knows make their husbands do what they want and that isn't any fun. In the interview with the boy he brought up his semi serious and semi faults threat to kill himself. If you were forced to return to a school where the administrators were institution centered rather than child centered the boy wanted his mother to think that he was going to jump from a roof about 50 feet above the ground. This boy appeared to have little or no interest in adults. He didn't want to communicate with them except when he got into trouble. And finally I thought his idea of a policeman is rather a classic and is probably typical of children
of this age. You have been listening to exploring the child's world.
