The following tape recorded program is made available to this station by the National Association of educational broadcasters. The legendary pianists. Washington State University brings you another in a series of recitals by the keyboard giants of the early 20th century. The masters of piano art made most of their recordings before the era of modern electronics. These legendary concert artists made their records on thick rolls of perforated paper similar to the player piano rolls but designed for a much more complex instrument called the reproducing piano recital we will hear today is selected from more than a thousand of these roll recordings in the collection of Dr. Campbell style. Famous as pianist teacher composer conductor author and musical editor for ritual Busoni who was born near Florence Italy in 1066 is generally respected as one of the greatest musicians of his time. He was a child prodigy and made his first successful tour in Italy at the age of 15 in 1909 and he became Professor of piano at the Conservatory of Hellsing Four's where he became acquainted with Sibelius. After winning the Rubenstein prize in 1890 for a composition untitled concert piece for piano and orchestra he taught for a short time at the Moscow Conservatory from 1891 to 94. He was in America giving concerts and teaching at the New England Conservatory in Boston. He spent most of his time during the next 20 years in Berlin where his reputation as a great pianist was personally established. In addition to original
compositions ranging from large symphonic works to small piano pieces he made transcriptions of several Bach numbers and added that the complete piano worked of Liszt. He spent his last few years in Berlin devoting most of his time to composing. He died in that city in 1904.
