… The Sorcerer is Apprentice by Paul Duca. Willis Page conducting the Eastman Philharmonia. Uff! For today's audiences, especially the younger listeners, it's a bit difficult to think that Stravinsky's
the right of a spring, literally precipitated a riot when Pyramon II conducted the first performance in Paris 55 years ago. The work has become so firm a part of the repertoire by now that it's no longer any more controversial than the Beethoven symphony we heard earlier tonight. Of course, the Beethoven, when it was new, was also in the controversial category. In any event, if the Stravinsky masterpiece has lost some of its shock value, it has not lost its musical value, one still finds more to admire and enjoy with each new hearing, and by now it's been subjected to about as wide a range of interpretive styles as the symphonies of Brahms. It is with this music that we conclude tonight's concert by Willis Page and the Eastman Philharmonia. The work is in two large sections, the adoration of the earth and the sacrifice, each in turn divided into several subsections, culminating in the final sacrificial dance. Here is the right of spring by Igor Stravinsky, Willis Page conducting the Eastman Philharmonia.
