God. And none care package. Michael is seven. He asks if you know why he is bad. Then he answers himself because nobody takes care of me. How does he feel when nobody loves him. He feels cool and because he is cold he is nervous because he is nervous. He is bad. One does not have to prove the obvious. It is obvious one who feels that he is as good as anyone else does not have to prove it. Those who try to prove that they are as good as anyone else probably feel that they are not unless they prove it. They feel discredited. It does not seem to occur to them that no one is asking for proof. It may be that no one cares. Some things are deceptive. They're not as obvious as they seen men look as though a horse pulls a wagon. The study of physics would demonstrate that a horse does not pull a wagon he pushes against the harness. If you were placed behind the wagon it would be obvious that he is pushing. It is the harness and the position of the horse that deceives us.
Lots of people. Have ready solutions to the problem of delinquency. We hesitate to approve of any of these. In fact we do not plan to even examine them at all. It may be that lighting dark streets may cut down delinquency. We rather suspect that brighter lights merely change the location of delinquency. We also suspected of all the streets were brightly lighted delinquency would take place in the daylight. It is not dark streets that cause delinquency. Perhaps it is dark hearts or starved hearts or uninformed minds are inflamed and twisted ones. Or it may be people without values or without goals or without kindness or without inhibitions without love. Here to interview and neglect a dependent child is father Duffy Professor of Sociology at Duquesne University. Father Duff. I think you will find Michael a very interesting little boy. He's only seven and in the first grade according to him his mother is not a warm loving person. His father
is warmer but then his father doesn't show up except to watch television. And moreover this is not his real father. Michael seems to be getting plenty. Every time I see him he observes that he's always getting punished because he's always bad. When asked why he's always bad he says it's because he's nervous. And then he explains that he's nervous because he's not loved or rather that than assure him that he is loved I asked him how it felt to be on the left and he replied it makes you feel cold. This is a very interesting observation. A person who cannot accept love and who has no love to give is said to be frigid. And this is just a Latin translation for the word cold anthropologically we know that children and primitives either like or need to sit around a fire a certain On stated times. If an individual is not liked if he is displeasing to the group he is not allowed to sit around the fire. He is not allowed to share the food nor the heat nor the love and he gets cold. We notice that
certain speakers and teachers have a warm quality to their voice and this means that they love the students or the audience and the love comes through in the form of a warm voice. Here then is Michael already Michael Cera. You like it here. Yes and every time I see you seem to be getting punished or you hear it before. Talking around guy your is talk out of turn. And how was it easy. Well today I. Was at home. Yes. What was so bad about it. But it was really care clean for camp because you took to it. Really is around your neck. And how about you Danny really really. Know him now. They live together. Well the line. From his home.
Oh Trish My man who works. Extra. And. Get ready doesn't hurt. Now do you ever live with him. I am. Going to. Take. You here after work.
She doesn't talk to. Her. Here. Does she come to see him. She's coming from a charity. Well how does it feel more to have a valley live with you. Doesn't anybody here like you. Like for the priest he likes you. Nobody else. So tell me. What was a never happened to you.
People are you. What was the saddest thing you were here. You. Know. Bernie. How come your. Boy. Told me. And she doesn't talk to me which.
Years old afterwards. Great first great year. Very good. Right here you are. A smart ass. You know you had it right the first time.
OK OK. That's right. Oh. OK.
House. Eight. How much. Three. How much. You know. Well.
Me. To try to change. The world. It's true. A brothel. She
knows me well. She. Can tell she got it. But we have a few choice will join. Us. You're nervous.
That's what makes you nervous. And. Right. Right. Take me through. She's.
Back to back. Thanks. Thank you so angry. You know me. Right. Michael.
Trying to. Make a living. Don't tell me you don't show up in my day.
She wanted to show. You to me when I told to meet her such a little guy. A nice word to me. So show me where you were born and brought you here enjoying trial. Carrying a leaf for our interest. You know we're only now beginning to sit at the right place our money your stomach is nervous tonight is your letter from Brighton.
Want to know right away. OK I think we will have to go to bed you know. OK that was Michael a little boy who was always cold. And here is Anthony a boy who was rather seriously retarded. He is 13 and only in the sixth grade. He's mischievous rather than bad and he needs support and help rather than punishment which he cannot even understand. And how could he profit from that which he cannot understand. He's a rather interesting child in that he and I were sitting absolutely alone in a room locked to unit and when I asked him a question he frequently said to me here is half a nice story. On the third day you've been here before. Yes how many times. Oh. How were you the
first time. I was 10 years old. I'm going to show you how come you came with time. Robbery. What about the second time. What was I thinking. Now. Tell me about a robbery robbery. Because we you know the bird houses down from the north side of the last part. Well we were messing around yeah you know let's have we seen this or do resolutely down you know this or kept it up like Parker in it a lot and we went in. Let's just go into a fish well. The wishing well for me. Where would collect all the money went to the shop. So the next day we did the same thing. And. The next day the same thing. So the first day when nobody was around so we can probably look and make it illegal to know the route I guess he would have anyway. I mean his brother
and two other kids wanted. And we need to be more direct competition as women are. When we were close a lot. And. So we get we get their pockets for when I was there. You know money we regularly make crime remarkable as I will you know we've got a lot of money and so Jerry you know Lance a cyclone in the brush with us. He looked at a fish one of those I would think many times over the PlayStation you know that you know you know PlayStation took the name down on it. They give it to the detectives than any detective question mean that he brought me over here didn't care to. Hear from time for stealing. A machine. Poor girl slack. From a clothesline. Now it seems her firing term. We should grow. She ran away from home you know
nice other two boys want to take or get into with two different places you know why she stayed here. Right. So they did. You know now I think they would take her because she needed some slacks. So I will tell you her purse laughs you know. And I got on the roof. You can give me 20 cents and I left. You know I think when I like how you do in school play pretty good. Great race on a special special sex. And one time we messed around a school that's a little truck at school and I took the truck and we got expelled for that this one locker now. Is trying to get well taken is the chalk at school. But tell me about your family. Confirming you know on the other hand there it's nice I mean. Any time a dead usually begins when an ear. Or when he's feeling good so I guess we can guess.
Yes. Well it was Sunday it was out the car and truck. Sometimes it is a holiday. I mean hello or. Anything or walk a pretty straight line something like you know. This is very happy to be with me and you know I meet sometimes they aggravate me but I mean it's better here you know. But tell me about you. Well what we saw was me my sister saw papers and it is because she took what customer I got married and I was going to her. You know when I went home. She told them are all happened almost too bad you should have took us closer to she was pushing weird thing I pushed her and we got into a little rumble. They might they have broken up. Once So transition harder they sent me to bed. Sometimes I sit on the
steps. Doesn't the team playing in a rhythm here. Can I run upstairs in the coming band mostly play with cute. Yes I get the feeling of you to come play tunes by relational for this one kids. So I came here to say good or bad news is he's a nice kid only so I got what this other kid could do this or want to. Jane said a day has to work and. It jets. You should love the hoodlums and actually getting the ball. Yes they get the call who will wish Loeffler. So cops raided the price almost an hour you know I could loaf and there was my dad's Allister. Will those things in your lawn grow think me good with bigger Bush. Yes one more. There was talk about. One of those calling names
on the net. So so my group Pandora to identify the chicken are one time we were going ice skating on a Sunday. We were going past a park you know me and the Jets just won a big gang. They where local elected to office had a donation so one can transition a nickel. You added to that is in the penny. The other kid was in a dive. I give my two cents so that's all change I got is more change. I didn't die and we left you know what we wanted in English to our current instructor in a said in me and we need to file sharers. You say we need third functions for those who are in a backpack is so great and so powerful to hear you have really given a couple you know. And to sit back and smile. Anyway you know I guess you don't want to cigarettes and
so basically don't guess I guess we just got wrong. All we had is enough for ice skating outing have enough fret work from giving 15 to the poor. And so on. In a way will Ice skating you know now do pretty good. I would I would own pretty bad at first but then I start right in there with a nice abortions and walk to his girlfriend's daughter. He made it there were you know just playing with you know. We stopped in the sun drugstore over town. Well Kim bought me a Coke in Hamburg and paid for it. And we we would hope that your family members mostly love you. Yes and our hands are gone. There was an aide so my mother became a simple. And one duck for me get where she makes homemade bread you know and it was all fresh low so
she just got a fresh loaf which is again a couple slices of bread. Well I was really like. If you like of my diocese stay in the shit I get for a week and not enough I said asking me you know. Well nice one Graham recently given us we go on and on and he might shoot you if I asked. I see actual papers on Saturdays. Well used to anyway. And you came here yes. And. I say Well my you know so I had a buck and when the mother came a song the first time I told her she can use the money I live by. I don't know money at home so she took the book out and she called here and asked for time visiting as well and I told her. Dates were true for Saturdays and.
67 night so that's what she did. She cried and she was here and 6:40 and her my probation officer talk to her and then it was 7:30 so the guard asters not to have their if I'm going to talk to me. Then tonight I went down to see where we were talking and I was asked about the little brothers in my mother's and brother sleep in a bed by myself now. She chewed off years she was in my bed.
