This is Music from Finland. The musical contemporary and folk music from the Sibelius Festival and the 50th anniversary of Finnish independent celebration in a series reviewing some of the current musical activity of Finland. The Sibelius Festival of 1965 and the 50th anniversary celebration of 1967 presented considerable quantities of music by outstanding composers other than Sibelius and from a wide variety of historical periods. This third series of programs of Music from Finland is based on recording supplied by the Finnish broadcasting company for production by the University of Michigan. Today's broadcast begins with an unusual work by one of Finland's leading composers, Eric
Beckmann. We will hear Feklarna, which is translated the birds. The composition is for male choir and is based on a text by Solvek von Schultz. Koko Kłosma performs on the Charesta and Rainer Kuisma is percussionist. Eric Beckmann is heard now conducting a performance of his own composition for male choir, The Birds. The birds, four male chorus, chelesta and percussion conducted by the composer, Eric Beckmann. The extended composition on today's broadcast is the concerto for violin, clarinet, French horn and string orchestra by another of Finland's outstanding contemporary composers, Ari Maricanto.
Maricanto died in 1958 at the age of 65. Unfortunately, he was almost completely misunderstood in his day. At a time when the trend of national romanticism prevailed in Finland, Maricanto had the courage to experiment with eternality and politonality. It's not been until the last few years that interest in his work has been evidenced. Neil's Eric Fuchsstedt now conducts the Radio Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Ari Maricanto's concerto for violin, clarinet, French horn and string orchestra.
