The University of Chicago and the national educational radio network. Welcome you to a concert by the University of Chicago contemporary Chamber Players Ralphs AP Music Director. Our program tonight includes works by Leon Kitchener Richard Wernick Eric Salzman Milton Babbitt and Robert Lombardo. Featured soloists will be neath a pilgrim soprano and the Charles Van Tassel baritone. The contemporary Chamber Players of the University of Chicago were organized in the fall of 1064 and are part of a program for the performance composition and study of contemporary music. Established at the University of Chicago with the support of a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation. The contemporary Chamber Players give five major concerts each year at the University of Chicago. And in addition to these concerts members of the CCP perform in some six or seven solo or small instrumental group concerts each season. Besides performing at the university the group undertakes a tour each season.
Past tours have taken them among other places to Milwaukee Philadelphia and to New York where they performed in Carnegie Hall to considerable critical acclaim in the spring of 965. Rough shape ie the musical director of the contemporary Chamber Players was born in Philadelphia in one thousand twenty one. He studied violin with the manuals that Len and composition with stuff on Vulcan. He has been the recipient of many awards among them the Brandeis creative arts award the Frank Huntington Bebe award. And recently the number Great Courting award for his rituals for symphony orchestra which was performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in May of 1066 with Mr shapely conducting. He has received commissions from outstanding performers as well as from the from Foundation Dimitri Metropolis Morgan Paul and the University of Chicago where he is a member of the faculty of the department of music. The
first work on tonight's program will be Leon Kitchener's trio for violin cello and piano. This work will be performed by Daniel Rousillon violin Shirley Evans cello and James Kidd piano. Was born in Brooklyn New York in 1900. And received his M.A. degree from the University of California at Berkeley. He studied with Ernest Bloch and Roger Sessions. Mr. Kitchener has taught on the faculties of the University of Southern California and Mills College and is currently professor of music at Harvard University. The second work to be performed is Richard Wernicke's lyrics from one time one set to three poems from the collection one time one by economies. Richard Wernick was born in Boston Massachusetts in 1034. He attended Brandeis University where he studied composition with the Irving Fein and Harold Shapiro and he received his M.A. from Mills College where he studied with Leon Kitchener.
In one thousand fifty seven fifty eight. Mr. Wernecke was the musical director and composer in residence of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and in 1062 was awarded a Ford Foundation fellowship for two years. In 1964 he joined the faculty of the University of Buffalo and in 1965 Mr. Wernecke came to the University of Chicago where he is now assistant professor of music and conductor of the University Symphony Orchestra. The last work to be heard before intermission tonight will be Eric Salzman Zz in praise of the owl and the cuckoo. After William Shakespeare. Mr. Salzman a pupil of Roger Sessions and Milton Babbitt. Studied at Columbia Princeton and in Italy on a Fulbright fellowship. He was the music critic for The New York Times from one thousand fifty eight to nine hundred sixty two. And for the New York Herald Tribune from 1963 until its demise. His book An Introduction to twentieth century music was published in January 967.

James Matterhorn trombone. Norbert Thomas percussion. James Kidd piano Daniel Rousillon violin and Mr Coffee by Ola Shirley Evans cello David Beth e bass and Richard pick guitar. cello and piano. This work was commissioned by the Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge foundation. For the 50th anniversary of the Coleman chamber music associates of Pasadena California. And was first performed in the fall of 954. The work is in two movements. The first cut to a past year not lyrically. And the second Largo. In just a moment then trio for violin cello and piano. And.
