It was from Haydn said Mozart that I first learned the true way to compose quartets Haydn's quartet in C major opus 74 number one dedicated to count the pony was written in the year seventeen hundred ninety three while a 23 year old Beethoven was Haydn student and
strict counterpoint. It represents the master at the peak of his perfection of the quartet form which auto yawn writes. It is not often that a composer hits so exactly upon the form studied to his conceptions. The quartet was Haydn's natural mode of expressing his feelings. The Quartet is cast in the perfectly balanced classic sonata form of four movements but it is distinguished by its more extended development of material and its foreshadowing of romanticism. The first movement utilizes the traditional scheme of exposition development and recapitulation the second as a simple three part song form the third a minuet while the fourth combines the boisterous humor of a Rondo finale with the serious craftsmanship of a first movement form. We begin the program with a performance of the quartet Opus 74 number 1 in C Major by Haydn played by the LA

Also in Switzerland Elliott Oreo was composed in one thousand fifty nine and first performed by the LA Sal quartet at the Darmstadt festival in 1962. The composer has the following to say about his work. Elliot Oreo is a synthesis of the various possibilities offered by string instruments. These possibilities are divided into three sections. Alpha Beta Gamma. Each representing a particular characteristic in the use of stringed instruments every measure of aleatory 0 leads to the interpreter certain choices of timbre intensity duration or pitch and frequently these are suggested by the
composer for the execution. The following is important to start with all players must agree on the character. The order of the different sections and the tempo unit determining continuity. The choice is made ad lib before each performance but may not be left to the discretion of the players. Many interpretations are possible however no more than two may be presented pre-concert neither lasting more than five minutes. Yohannes Brahms completed his first two string quartets in his 40th year after having written and destroyed almost two dozen quartets which did not meet his most exacting standards published in the year 873 the A minor quartet was dedicated to the great Viennese surgeon an amateur violinist Professor Bill wrote in contrast to its companion piece in C Minor with its dark sonorities and somber moods.
