There's one piece that I'd like to show you that's particularly interesting. It might not be the largest piece of metal in the rooms but it's one of the most interesting from a historical point of view. It's a little bottle decorated with blue and white decoration. That's dated actually to a specific year of 15th 52 and it has an inscription that names the person for whom it was made. A Portuguese sea captain named Jorge Henri case he was a very interesting man because he was the man who brought Francis exhibitor to China to attempt to convert the Chinese to Christianity. It's the earliest dated artifact. That has to do with the trade between China and the West that we have in North America. So it's one of my particular favorites. Another favorite piece in this room is this beautiful copper and blue vase that shows you a
dragon surrounded by clouds floating on the ocean. The dragon is the symbol of the energetic creative forces in the universe. In Chinese symbolism the yang as we call it there are many dragons and Hackleman house and this is one of my favorites. One of the great architectural treasures of Baltimore in fact the Vista is one of the most dynamic architectural views in Baltimore. The stairway was redone it was wide debate in the 1890s but everything that you see rising above that in the drum and in the dome itself dates to 1850 every bit of that beautiful stucco work. And then at the top in the 1890s the Jenks family replaced the original glass with a Tiffany skylight.
And that's what you see gleaming up at the top. Now. In the original library carved in the 1850s we've created what we call the peach bloom library and it shows off our collection of monochrome porcelains those single colored glazes that were so beautifully done by the Chinese particularly in the 18th century and among these places perhaps the finest and most delicate is the peach bloom bias. We have the finest collection in the western world. Twenty two pieces. And among these one piece in particular this beautiful vase known as the peach bloom vase is particularly famous. Many people consider the finest example in the world of this glaze. And it's been a very famous object since it was purchased in the 1880s by Mr. Walters for the van unprecedented size of $18000. We're very glad he bought it. It's one of Baltimore's real treasures.
The Japanese study is my favorite ambiance that we've created in the house this room as you can see is turned out like in a static period room that dates around the year 1880 or so. And here are very important collection of Japanese art mainly of the 19th century mainly decorative in character is installed. We think to maximum advantage when you come into this room you really have to look very very closely at the objects. For instance this great pagoda one of the latest works that we actually display in the house dates from around the year 1915 and it's surfaces really invite you to come and look very very closely you realize right away that the delicacy and subtlety of
Japanese craft and artistic traditions really make a lot of things that we do in the western world seem rather heavy handed by comparison. On the second floor of the galleries really changed because the nature of the objects changed. Up here we have archaeological materials and other older materials that they deserve the as 3000 B.C. and run through all of Asian history. In this room for instance we show ancient Chinese provinces all the way through town period porcelains. But. All. Of.
The beauty and serenity of this Buddha is obvious to everyone who looks he's one of the most important pieces in the house both because of his beauty and his rarity. He dates from around the year 610 A.D. made of a wooden core and covered with lacquer and originally with gilding and with various colors as you can still see on the surface. His restful and peaceful and sublime nature is very very powerful and we've created a small room rather dark and very contemplative in which we invite people to come and to experience the power of this image. Why I've only been able to show you a little bit of the architecture today and only a few of the highlights of the approximately thousand works of art that we have on view and hackmen house. We didn't get a chance to look at the Japanese painting of the Chinese painting or the Japanese armor
gallery that I know all the children are going to pick typically love the way they do the armor gallery in the 904 building. We even have a new cafe and events to Cilla they built into a beautiful sunken garden at the rear of the house so there's plenty to see and plenty of to see for everyone to enjoy. We invite everyone to come and enjoy Baltimore's greatest new treasure. The hackman House Museum of Asian art. Why. Why. Why. Why.
Ain't. In.

Many people consider it the finest example in the world of this glaze. And it's been a very famous object since it was purchased in the 1880s by Mr. Walters for the van unprecedented size of $18000. We're very glad he bought it. It's one of Baltimore's real treasures.

It's worth looking closely at it because its surface is so exciting and so very gated and it's worth pondering the glance of the Buddha as well as his general demeanor. He's really an extraordinary object.
William Walters in the course of about a half century collected in two fields with a vengeance in the two fields were 19th century art. Sculpture and painting particularly French. On the one hand and on the other hand Asian art. He was a pioneer collector in the field of Asia and much of what was material is what you find in happening fast. But it was Henry who between the years of roughly 1897 and his death in 1931. Who really amassed. The great scope. Of the collection that we have at the Walters today Henry is really the individual who made this museum. He too one of the great comprehensive museums. Twenty two thousand works of art ranging over
5000 years of mankind's creativity. From Ancient Egypt and 3000 B.C.. Up through the Are you well. From the time of the 19th to the 20th century everything from a Gyptian Greek Roman a trusty medieval renaissance baroque 18th century you name it. And Henry collected and he collected it not just one piece or two pieces an area. He was really a both a con a sewer and an art historian in a very deep sense in that he must have understood. That the history of art and works of art was best understood by using a comparative method. So he didn't buy one of a type he bought many. Of. Mayor it is a great day for Baltimore and for the entire state and I just think the thing that's so amazing about this new museum is the restoration of the building itself is almost as amazing as the artwork. People will come in and enjoy it and they'll be inspired by it. And that comes from somebody who doesn't know anything about art. So you know I just think that it's great and I talked to the director earlier and I said Bob this is Baltimore's gift to the world. It is a gift to the world and I hope that everybody who's watching will take the opportunity to come and see it perhaps starting tomorrow and. For those of you who are at home we're going to give you a special treat. A sneak preview with Bob Bergman of the hackmen house. There's one piece that I'd like to show you that's particularly interesting. It might not be the largest piece of metal in the rooms but it's one of the most interesting from a historical point of view. It's a little bottle decorated with blue and white decoration that dated actually to a specific year or 15 15 and it has an inscription that names the person for whom
it was made. A Portuguese captain named Jorge Henri case he was a very interesting man because he was the man who brought Francis exhibitor to China to attempt to convert the Chinese to Christianity. It's the earliest dated art of thought. That has to do with the trade between trying to and the West that we have in North America. So it's one of my particular favorites. We're outside it now. Vernon Square you could hear the music in the background. People will soon be going into the tent for dinner but right now I'm with Constantine from all this what do you think of this whole thing you have an art gallery you know about art fabulous architectural jewel in the heart of Baltimore in the month where the most beautiful square in the world actually. The home of the hackman has turned out beautifully. Everyone involved worked very hard to and their accomplishments have been great. You had a lot to do with it for any because you were involved with the building committee. You know I was my good fortune to serve as chairman of the building committee and it was of an exciting project to begin with. Jimmy Greaves The architect did a fantastic job. Our construction people were great and everybody else turned out a product that we think the city is going to be extremely proud with. It will be not only a cultural event for the city and a cultural resource but an economic one as well. We're very thrilled. We are also very thrilled with it and this is Mary Ellen and Frank Gunther How do you feel about it Frank. Oh this is terrific just another great happening for Baltimore so we're very proud to be here. Very I'm especially excited I'm a trustee of the Walters and we are just so thrilled to be able to present this great gift to Baltimore everybody and everybody in central Maryland I think it's a gift to the world because I think visitors are going to be coming here. Claudia I'm doing well Claudia Bismark I'm sorry. Let's start with you about last night really fast it was how it was quite a night it was more than anybody ever could have expected the reaction that people had. The museum was absolutely sensational. We hope that this marriage of art and architecture that we've created for
Baltimore is as successful every day as it was last night it is today. We want to come down and help it people came out who again and we're miles on their faces it was terrific We're very flattered and we're just delighted that everybody else is so delighted. Let's talk about today Claudio what is happening today what's on the agenda today as you see our members are back there going into the building right now and they've picked up their free time tickets at the entrance and they're waiting now for the parade to step off downtown near the convention center at noon be led by a 75 foot dragon Wow 26 dancers underneath it as it comes north to the Walters. The last unit in the parade is the gamelan orchestra which will be performing in the park strip. We have entertainment in the park and under the tent all afternoon. So all you have to do is pick up that free time to get right here at our booth and go in and see Hackleman house. Let me just explain the time to make it a little bit if I can do it. You just simply come down and get a ticket and it tells you what time you will be going into the hackman house you might want
to wander around the square for a little while. And why are you doing it this way we're not doing it this way because this beautiful environment we've created is fragile and it really can accept 5000 people at once. So we're having 300 or so every half hour move in. We think we'll be able to accommodate everyone today. But that's why we have so much going on in the square while you're waiting. Believe me you won't be bored. All right there's going to be entertainment all day long and we're going to be here live to show you some of the entertainment that come on down.
