Why. Hi I'm still in a state to have a weeknight ally. Was that right. Good evening welcome to weeknight alive I'm Kelly Saunders. Now on tonight's show we're going to be doing an end with
acts of pugilism Yes lots of boxing tonight in just a few minutes we're going to begin a three part Beacher with one of the world's great boxers the gentleman you just saw. All wet all over your screen and yes cigarette out was right. Stephen Hunter will review the new Twentieth Century-Fox release streets of gold which is about two young fellows who are hoping to make it in the boxing world. And it's also about their coach a Russian immigrant. The port McHenry Tunnel is one year old today and we're going to take you inside this amazing tunnel. It's received nothing but praise from those of us who use it and runs completely can be run completely on computer. Fascinating stuff on tests where we'll have a return visit to manor tavern one of the first restaurants we visited this year musically it is the folk sounds of Jonathan Edwards and friends. In Palmer Park Maryland right here in our own backyard there is a boxer who is known the whole world over that Boxer is 30 year old Sugar Ray Leonard. Now what's the sport of boxing all about for cigarettes. Tonight tomorrow and Wednesday night we're going to take an in-depth look at this man at his sport and
at his boxing future. It is a brutal sport. It's participants fighting. Nothing to pass the higher ideals of man nothing but the sport itself. I can even go even deeper because what happened the perception of the American public the fact that boxers becomes typical of the worst all because of. Will the lack of education they tend to spike that was the case with me. I'm doing something that I always want to do there was a boy I may not have a chance to fight mobs while the magnet swimmer swims against other swimmers and against the clock. A climber climbs Mount Everest to see if he can withstand the elements in each
case we used to measure something outside ourselves to test ourselves to prove ourselves. There is something very simple and very fair about two men stripped to the waist to compete with nothing more than courage strength the will to survive and they're just. A one time I was emulate jewel phrases style because he was so tenacious so aggressive and so domineering coward when you're about to get out by phone or camera right here you know I want to regain the heavyweight crown. And then I noticed that there was a better style much more of a tailor. Mom loneliest I watches. Then I will watch the tapes and sands of the past.
I was trying to find someone to present a war to mom. They wanted someone and they the box in public they couldn't think of anyone else hand locally because it was a charity situation. So my agent Charlie Brotman went to the I guess the executives say well let's get sugar a little this is prophylactics man. And the guy said sure who said this is going to be the Olympic gold medal winner. This guy's will be champion and you know all the other accolades. Yes it. OK. I had a chance to meet all of. You know it's like meet someone that you always allies in. And you've had. You have a question to ask. You get there and you don't have any family you froze it because it was a
great experience for me. There is a very great difference between a champion and a contender. Talking about his past. It's quite a tough sport boxing. We're going to have part two of the interview with Sugar Ray Leonard tomorrow night. One year ago today our traffic problems were really somewhat when Baltimore had the opening of the Fort McHenry Tunnel. Now what's so special about this tunnel. One thing is that if in a pinch if there were no men in the control room the computers could run the tunnel. Watch this.
It's not Star Wars but it is one of the most sophisticated and technologically advanced tunnels in the world. The Fort McHenry Tunnel which carries I-95 under the Patapsco River is operated by a high tech state of the art computer system. The system's functions range from monitoring traffic to regulating air within the traffic to counting toll money. Project began in May of 1980 with the construction of a 32 football field sized tubes were then towed 56 miles to the construction site where they were lowered and assembled by a complex
system of construction barges. Five and a half years and 750 million dollars later the tunnel. Let's complete. The point McHenry Tunnel opened November 24th 1985 and now processes 60000 vehicles again. We went inside with Officer user asking to find out just how complex a tunnel can be ordered to see a five year depicts actually was on the field. Each row of screens designates the tunnel work the top two rows being the southbound bores the bottom two rows being the northbound Bourse the red and green lights which you see also on a map board indicate a lot of things that are variable message signs speed limit signs lane directional control devices the octagon shape. To see a railway detectors you could probably see one of those on a camera. The octagon shape their sensors what they do these they sense us mean direction of travel of traffic flow and the
computer senses a problem area such as a stoppage that lets me know I want to believe that I've got a problem in a tunnel and then we can go to the computers and set signs designating link closures or whatever we have the computer closes the tunnel by itself when a message from up here at the control center and it takes approximately two minutes to shut down and it's hard work bored basically as a backup to the computer system. All the signing and verbal message boards and everything that we have at the field are usually controlled through the copy Tran computer system. And what that does is you find a problem area. You type in a computer to computer gives you a menu of actually what you can do in the field at that certain problem area and then you go from there. This detects failures in addition to the for the fall itself we monitor the grass and access roadways. The toll plaza and the entrance ramp in this particular camera not only in addition of monitoring the roadways you can monitor the surrounding areas are always when you also control up here the
tunnel lighting system the entrance portals of all the Brewers you'll notice a high intensity sodium vapor yellow light system. That's all photos self control and monitors. Sunlight level outside and brings up whatever lighting intensity and size to when you go into a dark tunnel your eyes automatically adjust. We have the ability also to override your regular and FM broadcast within the tunnels themselves to broadcast any messages that the transportation authority might deem necessary such as railway closings construction projects in the future accidents so on and so forth ahead to warn you of upcoming problems in the area. We can say it was a minor the carbon dioxide levels with an economy and any time the carbon dioxide levels on stored dangerous levels you get a visual signal for the red yellow lights up when the underneath the grass itself. And then in turn you can go to the fan board. This is the ventilation fan board. We run 24 exhaust and
24 ventilation fans. System isn't any one time we should increase power to a maximum level in all 48 bands. You could generate winds of up to 100 miles an hour within the tunnels and we monitor the electrical feeder system the supplies the entire project with electrical power. Right now we're operating off two separate feeders two separate power sources within the city. So in other words for the entire project a blackout you have to have a brownout stables in the city. If a feeders to go out of one location say a West Baltimore we have the option here of switching from one speaker to another to draw power from another location they haven't time we should lose power to the entire system to a brownout station a city which is highly unlikely. We've got also the luxury of maintaining our power to the entire system for about 20 minutes so a battery backup at the end of that 20 minute span. If we still haven't any power we're going to be a little bit troubled. And just how well does the Fort McHenry Tunnel aid the city of Baltimore. Just
ask the people who are using. Summit County towns a lot quicker and faster to get down to the house with all the traffic and better clothes easier. They can print it's quicker. Right so where are the best we can the tunnel has proved to be a valuable asset to the Baltimore area and we are happy to acknowledge its one year anniversary one year. And we'd like to thank Humphrey Berger and all the fine people at the Maryland Transportation Authority for their support and their cooperation and also thanks to Nancy Hackleman for the contribution of the construction footage. Tonight it's our pleasure to bring you three of the finest folk singers in our area Mary Chait then John
Jennings and Jonathan Edwards. Just another. Just another. Just another day. I'm watching. To have you back.
Just another down close to go
home just to know that they're close to having you back again. All right to have that happen. Jonathan Edwards and friends thank you. They probably go to the Manor tavern and join
Stephen Hunter for his a pugilistic movie. We're going to take a look at the rest of the week. And while we're talking about upcoming events Michael Lefkow is going to join us on the show this week as well the week of December the 8th weeknight alive will have nightly features on the golden years in celebration of this week we'd like you to let us know who are the oldest living Marylanders do you know any well please let us know who they are you can read us here and we
cannot ally Owings Mills Maryland 2 1 1 1 7. And why are you writing that address down. You can use that to get the next delicious recipe that you're going to see on Jeff's way. Tonight we go to Monkton Maryland where the specialty at the Manor tavern is baked lobster fisherman style. Located just northeast of the Baltimore city limits in the rolling hills of Monckton is the manor tavern. They serve lunch daily and dinners Tuesday through Sunday. They're also well known for their sumptuous Sunday brunch before a crackling fireplace in a warm country atmosphere. The menu features country specialty pheasant rabbit as well as and homemade desserts. Let's visit the kitchen and chef Don Fisher and they prepare one of his specialty but I'd like to make today is bake stuffed lobster fishermen have made it with the lobster in the
top of the lobster. Cutting through almost to the back where the tail section begins. At this point you want to clean the cavity out removing the runs and behind the eyes. An incision down the tail not all the way through just to the bottom just to the base. Not all the way through the trimming. Back without breaking it. I remove the tell me they're still leaving intact with the top lifting the meat out or still leaving it in the roster just to curl it up over the top. Will leave a space in the bottom of the lobster tail priced gallops shrimp and crab imperial next year. Now reading our galaxy has a shelf butter mixture.
Shrimp has already been. While they only for a matter of a few moments squeezing a fresh lemon juice such as white wine. Now we're going to stuff the lobster. The majority of the stuff that we're going to the top cavity the rest of the stuffing goes right into the town. Then a small amount of prepared crab Imperial will go over the top cavity of the remaining on top of the towel. Now we had our seafood topping just very lightly over the top and we're now ready for the broiler.
One of those cuts of five minutes is ready to go into a garnish plate to be served. Here we have the best. I told you that was going to be good and you can use that address that we gave you right before that piece and call and write and get that recipe. Joining us now our old friend Stephen Hunter from the Baltimore Sun. Talk about a movie about boxing gold streets of gold and that's right. You're pretty underwhelmed. I'm very underwhelmed. This movie feels so familiar if I sketched in the plot you jump up and say That's Rocky 5 or rocky
for Rocky. Basically it's about defeated melancholy man who uses boxing to sort of rebuild his soul and find his masculinity and assert himself. The difference from Iraq and by beating Russians is a matter of fact the difference between this film and Rocky is that instead of being a fighter himself he's a coach that is he has surrogate sons to do the fighting for and the interesting thing about streets of gold is the essential actor and that's crossed Maria Brandow who's a brilliant Austrian actor who was fabulous in the film of a few years ago called The fist and is remarkable for his performance in. Out of Africa last year read our plays Alec Newman a Russian exile who shows up in this country 10 years after as prime as a boxer and he's a drunken melancholy fool but he's still attracted to the boxing game and he's working as a dishwasher in the Brighton Beach section of New York City where all the Russian emigres live. And he goes to a boxing match one night and he sees
two young fighters and he's attracted to their vitality he recognizes them as having talent and the plot is very met mechanistically worked out so that he ends up coaching the two of them. And the film follows in predictable fashion as the two of them in a relay and as he plays the two of them off against each other. And somehow he gives them the chance that he never really got in the Soviet Union and of course the most sort of flagrantly manipulative aspect of the film is that in very shallow thin manner other than this I liked it a lot. What it brought it brings it around so that that one of these kids ends up fighting the Russians. I think the scene we're about to she see shows the two kids beginning to relate to each other outside the GM they've been competitors inside the gym. Now they're beginning to see each other as human beings as opposed to opponents. We see Darren sing bass right. What to eat what to drink.
You know something you going to get. I mean I would take the chance to get the hell out of you. But it was you.
Right. That was very hard to understand and also very static. I mean the cameras stay still with two guys talking to each other. It was and the camera angle never to us exactly right now we do have some action coming up where we get to see people exercise if you like exercise. You know that's the movie I mean it's mostly
exercise montage was of course more your brand they were walking in and saying a few sly lines and walking and lots of sweating not a good movie. Too bad because this guy is such a gifted actor you really want to see him in the part that would you know straighten your hair like is he doing it just for the money then I want money offering I'm not meeting scripts. I'm not sure what it what his motives are I have such respect for him as an actor that I believe he looked at the script and felt he could sustain it. And I can't believe he he endorses the final product. I can't believe he understood that there'd be so much sort of vacant video as ation techniques as we saw there. OK. Thank you Stephen My pleasure. And the one you're doing in a couple days is the new Steven Spielberg animated one. That's right that's it for tonight and I wanted to write Leonard at length Stein Jean-Michel latticed musically Eugene phrasing of the Paul what a concert we see it seven goodnight.
