Yeah. And you. Should Know. You will see how easy it is to do this. Thanks. To. You. Hello everybody and welcome. Thomas lamps one of the legit concerns for an awful lot of people these days is security and that's what we're going to be talking about the book how you can install deadbolt locks on your home. The boy added security and protection. And Jordan Johnson is going to show us how you can do it. I don't Tom son Jordan although the whole brother to everybody watching can tackle and people who are successful at Rush are can it's not a bad job at all. There's a couple of different types of locks and occult reasons you'd use the particular one I have tonight. We have a deadbolt keyed lock tonight key from both sides and the reason for that is. It's a glass door and somebody can break in the glass if you have the type where you could turn with you if you have a phone right. They could break in the glass and just turn the
lock any way they wanted to. So what they're really interested in now is making sure that we have not only a double lock before. Oh definitely. And when you're looking for a dead bolt lock what you want to look for is something that the lock itself as we place it on the door that will extend into the door jamb at least 1 inch steel bolt should actually extend into the door jamb about an inch and you go through it with a screwdriver. Here with. With This is what we're talking about is when when it is luck that those bolts. At least an inch into the door into the receiver. Exactly right. I'll get. The reason for that. Thomas is a funny professional burglars if you will. When they come to a door they'll look for something that does not have. You know these types of things for instance if it does. Not have or it has a relatively weak lock on it. Take a
jack hydraulic jack and just the door jambs apart. Nothing is keep the door on the NSA normally or with the smaller lot they just keep the door in any way. This will give you enough security that makes it very difficult. You will give a full each right. So that's the reason for that. That much in the world would only if they were positive notice but that hole is all being what's happening out there and how they can protect themselves really easily and inexpensively it is Thomas and this is one of the primary ways we may show on another show how to protect windows but for your doors. Entrance into your doors deadbolts your most secure measure right. Oh yeah how do we start now. You know we've already taken the door down as you can see with taking off the regular door. We don't want to put it at the regular door knob or want to put it below or above. Usually above would be a better deal because easier access. There not. Real bulky looking things they fit very nicely with your regular door knob you can get them to fit your different
colors. So maybe better to come up oh six eight inches above your your present door. Unless the window does not the light as these planes are called right does not allow enough room for you to go in. Usually there is enough room. It's what you want and how do we how do we know where to put it how do we know how do we make that judgement. Why don't we just roll back here and well work on it and it hangs out over there. Yeah Thomas the manufacturer usually what's called a template. And that template. Will indicate where you not mark the hole for your lock your cylinder to go through and where to knock a lot for that plunger. If you will to get it so you'll have a mark this template will indicate where to cut the round hole out here and to cut the hole in the front part of the puts. Put two or three eights back so that the other two and three quarter inch backset. What does that mean.
OK all they're talking about there is the width of your door and the measures that we can turn this just slightly right now. This distance Thomas. Right. Here right across the face of the door and you'd measure to determine which backs it should use. Measure. The One. All the way across from one edge to the other you know what we've got there Thomas. Inch and three quarters right. Yeah. So. How do we solve that mystery if you know the inch and three quarters. Door. Has a place only three quarters. Right. That means this hole will not be because of this water with here this hole will not be as far round. As a door that's thinner right. So you would use the. Specs at right where there would be two and three quarters right. For the engine three quarters you would use the two and three
quarters and that's the one right here right. Now to set it up. The reason for this is this determines the distance and we can put the door but go about. The distance. From the front of the store to here is determining the amount that you need is determined by that law keeper that we were just showing you right now the keeper but the actual plunger. To use the template. There's a dotted line. You fold it along that dotted line. Placed on the door where you going to put your lock and let's put it about their thumbs. Hold it in place. Drill it was really already 40. It's already in there. Now the next step if you know if you're ever. Not sure about what you're going to do. You can go back down to where your other hole is easily. And take you know your template up and determine which one of these rings. That
is the bit is the appropriate right. So in this case. This one right here. You'll simply mark. Your home. Now there's a couple ways to do that I did it with a pencil you can also do it with a finishing nail. And just take a hammer. Thank you. Start. OK so actually this the point would be well you got one more step. And I'm just going to step down here because we make sure you back up on that hole or you have a line in the hole. Now what you're going to need to do is turn the door might make you and what you marked that place. There's another position. On the front side that also has to be marked right you can have drill two holes. In a given. Record or so you have to put it on sooner the three quarter. Indicator indicator right.
There. Of course he would do it on the. Small holes in the kit if we were going to drill this is because not only we need to put the lock in here. Both have to have a place. Right now there's a couple ways you can drill that with a couple of drill bits on the mark when you can drill with a regular bit or three quarter inch hole right up in here. And circle and take a keyhole saw. It's very difficult to do and I wouldn't suggest it for an amateur especially. Rather go to the hardware store and buy a rather inexpensive bit. This one's about $8. This when I was about 3 or 4 dollars. This is a hole saw. And it's to an 8 inches because that's the hole size required for the cylinder to fit in and you can only go with this one. I suggest for home use thinking up one
that you can do the actual blade size you won't know the ones you know a lot of different did exactly. So rather than have one that you can use one time and nothing else you can do with it and get you one that you can adjust. So you would have just one of these. There's a bolt or nut right on the back. You simply take. Your pliers. Loosen that bolt. Then. You can take in move turning. See there's two pieces here. Two pieces of metal. Into adjusted you turn the lower plate. To whatever level you want and there are indicators and the bits expand expanding a. Little more difficult to get him out. Because you have to kind of work and. Expand. Now. You will place these bits when you're. Getting ready to set them. Make sure the outside of the bit so what you're placing them to mark because
asked it's going to be the maximum width of your hole. I don't know if you can pick it up or not but in the settings with the kitchen and what you measure to exactly so you want to go to. To an 8 inches Thomas. Is broken into segments of two inches to two and a half and then it has a broken down to half again. Be right there. And you just tighten your boat. Or it. Lets up a little. It's not a hard task at all and you can use this for a lot of other jobs. For doing different all sounds right. Course the next thing you need is a drill. If you don't have one buy one from your friendly neighbor to return it. Yes when you're hurt reporting a bit and always unplug it.
Yes. It will tell you when you check up ticks at the bit. Place it in. Now. It's not good. Unplug and back up. OK. Now what you need to do is drill this hole and you just take your There's a god bit in here and you stay they got in place it in your power hole you've already started. Right now you know this is a slow process in that you have to not put too much pressure and you have to apply even pressure on your grill. Don't lean it or tilted too much at one time if you do your breakable. Tom's lecture on what to do next thing. You just turn a drill start out pretty slowly and just drill all the way through it. Thank you
thank you. To. The to. The to. The to. The to. The to the to. Yes most of the time. If you'll note these bits won't quite fit all the way through right. And this will make it a little small polyp when Michael we didn't like it. OK well we're going to try to get votes. We're not you know. What you're doing. I don't know whether we all were through yet it starts with. OK. It's a feeling. Of the two.
OK you know. That hole does not make it all the way through. Pretty simple process. Putting your nail. You don't need a part of the inside only to hammer tiles. Were to. Get one got a surplus. It was almost three. Gotten as a god on the other side of this. I knew enough about that or you are right or I should have it and you know we got a little pilot to go back to simple place should be at right back in that hole. And starting from a side. You know. That song
right. Now. Once you've gotten that hold I need to clean it out. And you don't need to drill. Another hole on the other side. No we've already made the pilot home. Exactly. Let's go to door again so that everybody can. Here's our probable that we leave earlier and of course we'll drill now through this hole into the one that we just drilled into the base of it's a little hole here. What the what the exit hole here this is where the ball will go. Right. Well this particular calls for a one inch hole in here right to allow to fit in and therefore using a one inch bit. Exactly. Now when you drill this And be sure that your drill is not way up the weight and has to be perpendicular to the face of this door. OK. If you get it. Right. The third
thing. Thanks. Yeah but slips a little bit and you know it all in a moment her balls. Well the bid was tightened. Tension is heightened. And we move right or get a shot of a coma for a while you know. Thank you. Thank you. But more time now that's pretty typical of what your face when you put in a lock is going to slip sometimes in the woods pretty hard in the can you have the patient do you work. With all of those no problems there with the slipping of the belts and nothing else you know that's good to know but
don't want the story because you have to roll your after security. Yes and this is a solid core door so it's fairly solid core right. THOMAS The next part about this is. Your piece it actually the ball a little to Silver a little bit of what you know but I'm sure there we go. And I did well with it up here and you have to live with this and we have to want to sit for recess right which isn't too bad of a deal. To do that you need a couple chills. You need to hold that in place. There. Let us. Draw around it. This looks like it could be going to get a tomato products. Oh it's not too bad if you
follow a few basic steps. Use a fairly good sized chisel. I'm going to get a new year while I do it. What you do is take the. Accusative and over the flat side should face the outside because that's the movie and you want. Right. Out there. And you will recess it enough so that piece will fit flush with the door. At all. Now we're going across the grain now so it's going to a little harder than when you go down. When you go down you have to remember that it could split. But that really doesn't matter does it because that's what we're trying to get at is that a movable.
OK you know we've got to listen to the board will be right. Use a little water. This you don't have to hit as hard because it's going. To get through that truck. You will do it a little wider than the whole. Project. It's not a bad spot inside or you got some time to deal with. Several in my house. Didn't take long to do it. Next thing you have to do Thomas
or Chanel. Can do that by taking a bit. Of placing up in the. Hole and going up. Thinking this. Is the other. Piece. We've already cut around so fairly easily. You need to do the same thing on the downward motion. It's easily Their come out. Yeah those are pretty good I like the way it was. To clean out your string and. Now there's always a. Man who may need a pocket knife or something to. Get your. Weaknesses cleaned up pretty good. So as to help feel. Good.
Now. Probably that's not quite deep enough for the normal under. Normal circumstances what you would do is continue to chisel until you had this hole deep enough to receive this thing into it so that it would not be true past the door itself. Well it's fairly close. OK Thomas the next step in this thing is to bolt to mount this actually to the door. OK now we're doing a little bit. Oh you know what. OK. Pretty simple. And I will pull out my trusty drill. Jordan's favorite. Right now you need some people would go ahead and put power poles in here with a finishing nail or something. So these would go where you probably should too. We will give it a try here for. Now. Don't talk him. Down too tight. Do you get both of me in about same distance.
It will slip a little. Close to screw over. The heart of the world I'll have a spin on a door open a little really all be secure when we go to the community it will go anywhere. OK. And chances are or. Like you would hold the door the little bit just about as well yes. Now these would've been a lot easier right away if you want to get the screws to go a lot faster. You can drive a drill a pothole or drive it with a finishing nail and they put some liquid detergent on the edges of these and screws a slip right in. Look at a photo board or whatever anything that you could OK. Sometimes margarine or something. Whatever it takes. The next step in the process. Is to place your key pieces into the
bolt itself. Now. These have little. Grooves that fit into it if you know this one. Has a place for screws. OK. And of course I would go inside of your door. Because it also went outside taking a walk off. Exactly right. Let's assume that this is inside. OK take this and there's a place in there for the four of these little groups. There's a little. Nipple. Right here in the middle right that has to conform to the shape. Inside the lot. So you turn to. Slide it in place. You hold it right there and you have to do the same thing on the other side and then turn it around but you have to land these holes up with the bolt holes that are made for in this bolt right. Slide it in place. And we are slamming it why don't you boys dance.
As we used to do. And this one needs to go. OK. Now. Once you've lined it up like that you'll need to take your key. And open. Places so you can get the screws in there right. Now with no luck. The cover up right exactly nests so that if someone breaks a glass I can just take a screwdriver and get to the screws. So all safety feature on top of a slave to exactly Thomas. Now. All you can do. Simply screw the screws right into place. I love that. I can't believe they got a little cover that goes over that's pretty good in there. Screw that nice and firm Don't screw that one all the way down until you've. Got the other one in
place so as not to knock him out of oil. Exactly. See what a nice nice job it does of covering the hole with how good it looks. For the hardest part is drilling a hole. It's not going to being a bit of a drill bit of it on their. Own. Snow goes down. In time as the next course you just. Try your key if you want to turn that. Right and if that's right into the receiver. Right. Now. The next step. Pretty much. And we will go through the whole process. But you have what's called a keeper Thomas. Right here and if your door jam. Were Here. This well would actually be like that. It would actually. Flood. You'll turn it so the right would actually slam into the J and if there was a hole there. Right. So what you do next of course is Drew your hole here.
And then put your keeper. Right over your hole. Right. Now if you have trouble finding where to drill the hole you simply put your graphite right on this the bolt itself. Shut your door firmly as it would normally and then take your key. If you turn it and you run. The key. Against the right and then take it back. Open your door and you can tell. Where to drill the hole. You Drew. And again you're going to have to mourn for the keeper. Want to sort out. What you've got in place. This should slide in like that. It's pretty easy. When you get down to the biggest thing is to do it and go ahead and jump out with Leo. Go ahead drill a hole in the door to leave us a lot of good.
Should I drill a hole in the door here. Once you've made up in the sport it is now the only two that I would give somebody is forgiving someone else right. It's also excellent for keeping you. If you lose the key and this is because there's no way for you to get out through that so make sure you keep it near the door not in arm's reach if they can break a window keep it somewhere that you know that it's accessible and that you can get to in case of fire. Also a good animal with a lot of people have to put the key in the lock. Well the thing is having to. Thought they could be broken out of the wall book and just cut it off and slid open it himself. Do not keep the key a lot. As daughter what is where else. THOMAS The one thing that would have shown is that you might think that you can hear a broken window but you can't. They've shown that most of the robberies that occur when people are home. They broke a window and the people never heard it.
Well there is one point we want to ponder that you can do an awful lot to secure your own safety on the whole. George has just told us that you can fix it so you know next time we have another project. Or you can fix it this is what you want to Jhansi next. Will Show You. How you can make sad. We'll show you. Grab your hand now. We'll send you money. So come on now. Just follow the show. You will feel much better when you know that you. Will show you that you. Will Show You. Will show you up Xander only it takes time and.
