It's. This is you're fishing on the fly report for the weekend of May 7th. The big news this week is Mother's Day as in caddis hatch and they're just starting to appear around evening on the Yellowstone. So you know what that means. Expect major hatches there. And on the Madison next week with the approaching warmer weather. The fishing is looking good all over southwest Montana right now with unseasonably cool temperatures we've been experiencing leaving Rivers fairly clear right now. The Gallatin is in great pre runoff shape with steady flows and the fish are looking up for beat those in March browns on the lower sections on cloudy days. St. fly patterns with the sort of drop or nets are the ticket. Just about anywhere but throw the big nasty bugs below Williams bridge. In lower Madison is off color right now and look for Cherry Creek to blow out with warmer weather. So your best bet for now is Nim's out worms and eggs and orange pekoe and crayfish patterns and keep watching for the periods of clear water and good dry fly action as the fish begin to look up.
The Emperor Madison is fishing well with limited access from McEntee to Ennis in between the lakes. Of worms and may fly and nymphs have been taking some nice fish. Try a red copper Johns and see what happens. Good visibility and warming water temperatures could make this an epic year for the caddis hatch on the Yellowstone blue wings are coming off in the Valley section on overcast days. The look for the caddice to take the headlines soon. Until then try a stone fly nymph with a May fly dropper like a copper Johns pheasant tail or a lightning bug. And don't be shy about tossing the big streamers. Keep an eye on the daily weather fluctuations if it's sunny and above 60. Look for cadis. Otherwise watch for B W O as on the cloudy days and always keep a good selection of names handy. This is your fishing on the fly report brought to you by Montana traffickers.
