Description
Episode Description
Here and Now, Gas Prices, AAA reports that the average cost per gallon of regular gas in Wisconsin today is $3.71. That's hard enough on car commuters, but spiraling fuel costs are especially tough for those in the transport and trucking industries. Diesel fuel is now $4.26. One Wisconsin trucking company announced this week that they're asking their fleet of drivers to keep cruising speeds at 60 miles per hour in order to save fuel. But these hard times bring special challenges to independent truckers out there on the road working for themselves. (w/ trucking broll during opening copy), Racial sentencing disparity, New reports out this week show blacks are disproportionately doing prison time over whites for drug convictions. In fact, the studies by the Sentencing Project and Human Rights Watch show that Wisconsin has the highest sentencing disparity by race in the country. African-Americans are 42 times more likely to get prison for drug convictions than whites. The Governor and state lawmakers want to crack down on repeat drunk drivers after Wisconsin's drinking problem continues to make news. Governor Doyle said Wednesday that a third conviction for driving while intoxicated should be made a felony. Democratic Senators Herb Kohl and Russ Feingold still have not formally endorsed either presidential candidate. SOT from curator Leslie Bellais about the new exhibit at the State Historical Museum chronicaling the life of Chris Farley. State Budget, The quest at the State Capitol to fill a more than $500 million State Budget hole continued this week. Legislative leaders kept the phone lines open at least today for continued talks. The one shred of progress may be the prospect of an assembly floor session on the topic next week. Wisconsin Public Radio's Shawn Johnson will be there and he joins us now with a State Budget scorecard. Wisconsin Votes', A new book charts Wisconsin's political lifeline from statehood to the progressive era to the Tommy Thompson years and all the way to the present day. Robert Booth Fowler's 'Wisconsin Votes' does so by examining the choices made in the voting booth in the Badger State.
