Pole your hand is delish Well on August 20th 1886 died October the 22nd 1965 nor being non-human or human can be separated from our lives I beings all I have is a part of life universal and the law of inequality and so the mystery of the election can be understood only in June E.T. the destiny of every seeing that as being inspired of serious Ponzi BGT which nobody can take from us we are not separated from this unity in spite of SIGINT reaches Oh us we passed in each other's us and each other's us forgiveness. Point to dish was born in Prussia. He came to the United States in
1934 and joined the faculty of Union Theological Seminary in New York. He taught there until 1954 when he became a university professor at Harvard. Professor delish remained at Harvard until 1962 when he left there to continue his teaching and studies at the University of Chicago. He studied the relationship of theology to philosophy history psychology and culture and is known to theologians especially for his three volume systematic theology and to laymen for such books as the cottage to be love and justice and the shaking of the foundations. Dr. James Luther Adams professor of social ethics Harvard Divinity School. Paul Tillich is one of the great heroes of the modern in our century. Among his tall countryman his name will be mentioned along with the names of Aaron and Max.
The scope of his interest was like under there is in the breadth and the depth of his insight was more profound than theirs. The style of his writing both in his mother tongue and especially in the language of his adoption reveals a luminous numinous quality that is unique. A luminous style I have said. The metaphor is that of light but the substance of his writing is numinous foretelling principle intended it to be a reflective light the light of eternity the light of Newman. The luminous and numinous quality of telex thought and intention is well illustrated by one of his mentors the German the ASA first of the 17th century. The fact
that Killick in significant ways was stimulated by the writings of this Luther a mystic gives reason for us to recall here the character of Boomer's vision. As he was at work in his shop this shoemakers glance was one day attracted by a polished pewter dish which with dazzling light reflected the sun. A strange feeling overpowered him for it seemed as if he were looking into the very heart of reality and beholding its innermost mystery. Speaking of this experience Burma said. I fell into great melancholy and sadness when I beheld the mighty deep of this world with its stars and clouds rain and snow. For I saw evil and good love and raff in all things in the earth and its elements as well as in man and beast.
In this light I saw through all things and into all creatures. And then. I had a great impulse to describe the being of God. Here we see the great themes of tell like the darkness and the light. The raft and the love. The coincidence of opposites as he was so fond of say. Paul Tillich reared in the household of a Lutheran pastor served as a vicar in a parish in Brandenburg and then later on as a chaplain in the German army of the First World War when he was in the early twenties he published his first two books volumes the deal was shellings construction of the history of religion and with his conceptions of mysticism and guilt of union wit
and estrangement from the powers of being here like Burma he reveals a vivid awareness of the demonic as well as those of the divine elements in nature and in human nature. And human history. The theme is also that of Luther. The theme of the love. And the rod of God. During his three years of service as chaplain in the army. The young theologian determined to find respite from the bludgeoning of war by devoting his leisure to the study of art. He tells us that from his pleasure in the poor reproductions that were obtainable at the military bookstores in the fields there grew a systematic study of art. The early Christian art of Italy. He tells us later made an overwhelming impression upon him. What no amount of study of church history
had brought was accomplished by the mosaic in ancient Roman basilicas. These experiences led him on to the study of contemporary poetry and painting. Thus he came to an appreciation of expressionism. As a manifestation. And these are his words of mystical fullness the form charged with metaphysical import. For me. In an essay of that period he adopts the metaphor of light to express his awareness of the illness. If we imagine he says the import or ultimate meaning to be the son and form the orbit of a planet then for every form of culture there is proximity to and distance from the sun or the import. It is the power of the sun which is revealed in the newness to the sun.
It is the peculiar power in the movement of the planets which is expressed in the distance from the sun and yet it is the sun itself which supports both the near nice and distance. In these early years he sketched out a theology of culture where the delineation of the divine Yes and the divine No upon culture and religion present the light motifs of all his later work. Tillich would have liked the question of Francis Bacon in the first of his essays were it not better for a man in a fair room to set up one great light or a branching candlestick of lights then to go about with a small watch candle into every corner. He would have liked Also another word from bacon. Truth may perhaps come to the price of a pearl that shell at best by day but it will not rise to the price of a diamond or Carbuncle that show off best in varied
lights. During the next two decades. In the light of his vision of the one great light that tempted to interpret the expressions and the distortions of religion and culture in varied lights it is an astonishing journey to follow him through this cause damage from our study of the plastic art painting and architecture. And an editor in one of the magazines which published an article of his on architecture put in the footnote Alltel Lake is one of the distinguished architects of contemporary Germany. It is an astonishing journey to follow him through this program emerge from the study of the plastic arts painting and architecture to a substantial theological interpretation of all the sciences from logic and mathematics to the natural and the social sciences metaphysical theology and on to a religious interpretation of social and economic forces and to a theology of history.
No theologian in our time and seldom in modern history has attempted such scope. This effort actually however brought him into exile among us. The successor of Mac Shayler in Frankfurt he was dismissed from the university by the net. He had not been any quiet one. He had been one of the MOT articulate anti naturally religious socialists. And in 1934 he became one of the gifts of Hitler to America. The task of learning a new language and of adjusting himself to a new midyear required as many of us now. An enormous expanse of energy Tillich pursued his vocation as theologian and teacher in the painful conviction that in many quarters and particularly in the churches
Christianity was Mara bond partly because of the bondage of the church is to a class mentality partly because of their in Kaseman in a rigid theological language that was incapable of speaking with power to the condition of man in our time and partly because of the now all ecclesiastical conception of Christianity and a superficial view of potentially vital and unconsciously religious elements in the culture. He was committed to the task of finding a new language and giving new utterance to the prophetic tradition of Judaism and Christianity. Imagine the shock which he gave to many of his fellow Christians when in nine hundred twenty six he wrote. In the nineteenth century the prophetic spirit brought forth into places and each time it was under the banner of a conflict with Christianity. In Karl Marx and Friedrich Nietzsche in Marx we find by word and deed the
spirit of the old Jewish prophecy and in nature the spirit. Luther although this battle in the one case for justice and in the other for the creative life took its form as a drive against God. It was an attack upon a God who had been bound to a standpoint that is a bourgeois society. Naturally he goes on this attack in turn developed into a standpoint perhaps the highest that was then possible. Almost all that has been possible outside of and beyond bourgeois society has been influenced from these two sources. On the one hand from nature the Vitalist of philosophy the expressionist art and literature the youth movement the campaign against would walk convictions. The appreciation of aristocratic disciplines still found the Aga and his school. On the other hand from Marx the philosophy of history the passionate tension created by concerted effort
directed toward the future. The campaign against the bourgeois ethos against capitalism and imperialism. The ideal of a fellowship culture and a protest against the alliance of the churches with the capitalistic sovereign state. For a long time Tillich sought new symbols for the creative power. Of the divine entity and for the demonic powers of our age. As the Old Testament prophets early Christianity Luther Marx and nature had done for their age and time. We see here the fundamental impulses that pervaded pillocks whole career. He wished to make the prophetic and the sacramental the theological and philosophical traditions relevant to the present historical situation and he did this by means of a constant dialogue with the creative and critical figures
of past and present from Anas to do some call on the church fathers from Samandar to Aristotle and Plato and photonics and Augustine from York him a few art and Nicholas of Cusa and Luther from Kant and fakta and shallowing Marx and needs and so on down to Freud and Heidegger. With the biblical symbols serving always has touched off as least in his systematic theology he drew from this dialogue. The resource centers could give new and original expression in an architect tonic fashion and in varied lights to the divine presence. That alone can give new life new courage to be to see and to act. He carried on the dialogue in such a fashion as to reveal the prism of the divine presence on judgment and all spheres of culture. Although he was not
enthusiastic about the life and work of curator and aphorism of good points to the intent of the whole dialogue it was good at. Who said a tradition cannot. Be inherited it must be earned. In his life along with past and present to like his start to do for our time what Augustine attempted in his own desperate age as Rome's sway was foundering in the West to confront every warring ideology in the hope of freeing a deeply rooted faith of accumulated drops and everyone knowing the power of religious symbols. I saw that distracted and alienated spirits might once again be brought to an authentic ultimate concern through sharing the faith of a Luther in the new being in Christ a faith that knows both the wrath and the love of God. Our faith that justifies
both the intellectual and the maro conscience of man. It is difficult to say whether or not to like has a list of the following. It may be called the school but there are few people who have them come familiar with him inside the church or outside them. Who have not been quickened to a new awareness of the light to the Gentiles and out of the Darkness Visible that corrupts and enervates the heart of man. Certainly this impact coming from the mind and spirit of public is in large part due to our recognition of the originality and patient integrity of this man. He was himself a living example of the divinely given power and courage to be. He was a union of Apollon you and I and he empowers our marriage on dogmatic humility with the abundance of daring exploration of creative possibilities.
And here we have advanced beyond the thinker to the person Paul Tillich the life he gave was not a cold intellectual light. It was the light and warmth of response of fellowship dialogue for him was a channel of the divine grace a manifestation of the very power of being. Recently by dint of some effort we have retreated from a library and Cyrix a letter which he wrote in 143 to Thomas Mann in preparation of his novel Dr. Faustus Thomas Mann had requested from Telic. I will record a memorandum regarding theological studies and outlooks in how or where to get started at the beginning of this century. The first section of Thomas Mann's novel reveals the influence of this latter.
From Teluk. And of man's familiarity with the other writings of jelly. You know Leonard among many other things Tillich speaks of his appreciation of the lectures of his teacher Martin Taylor and he says that he was not engaged by the systematic presentation in the lectures but rather by the asides ideas mentioned out of context. He speaks of his own discussions late into the night under the dawn with his student colleagues. And then he adds. What I have become as a theologian. As a philosopher. And as a man. I only I owe only in part to professors. And in a comparatively overwhelming degree to a student association. It was apparently from these experiences that I asked people I don't send in Bear lean.
He was moved to introduce what he called discussion breaks even during the lectures a practice that was not customary I assure you. At that time we have all enjoyed dialogues with him in these encounters with him. Those who have known him as students and colleagues have experienced the light and warmth of his person. What Phillips Brooks used to call truth. Reflected through personality. For this reason his former students and also men and women from many walks of life again and again sought him out for the sheer exhilarating joy. Of being with him. We have known Paul Tillich have known greatness and now we can't. What do we have. We have only to be use and nice you know to make it.
Just apply this to 0 9 as 8 wasa long or short in the memo we offer all of us many things which we had without having them and Richman taking over the farm house. Some of them got loss because we had to sacrifice them you know to make other things go beyond being a given you know send us that cannot be used tend to increase our lifes is possible only because we have sacrifice of age a new gift of innocence.
Nevertheless the feeling of some seeing bitch is taking from us as us Adachi. Maybe I give you full enthusiasm for many things and I just cannot be you. Most of the object must be sacrificed for a few and if you must be approached by Miss Norman he is possible without this sacrifice. Nevertheless often a man longing for the loss possibilities and he lost enthusiasm
takes hold of us as we head and head. Not that that's even taken from us. The other things which we had and Richard conformists because we let them go by not using them and not making them go. Some of us had a deep sensitivity quality Vonda of life as it is revealed to nature slowly and as the pressure of social and of cheap leisure as well to be had and yes the
freshness of the young day sit dying day the majesty of Simone the infinity of CES see the flour baking Sousa's the perfection of its movements. Give us an intensive feeling of joy and love off life. Perhaps we try to produce such feelings again and do not succeed. We had them and had them not and have been taken from us. It's amongst us makes music to the Great Place one to two Devo Nof Sam
one lift in them and created for one sad life evolves a daily life. We head on this and did not have it. We did not let it go. Our love talks vas not strong enough and so it was taken from us and we try to lead the fall my ex. Many especially in this time saw us to find Toulouse was the driving force in their lives. They went to college and university not in order to buy their entrance ticket into the upper classes in order to call the right preconditions of social and
economic success. But they have found knowledge. They had charm seeing and Mark could have been given to them by do you know. They did not have it. They did not make it go. And so it was taken from them. And she fell into indifference talked to and finished the academic work in terms of expediency Fazio lead her life their love. Less than a palm off penetrating into it was fun and although in some moments they are seeking.
But because they have loss they do not get it back. Oh delish was a theologian for many. For other theologians for artists for psychologists for students throughout his life the relationship of philosophy to theology was a basic issue and he asked the questions. What is man without the awareness of his finitude what without the realisation of his guilt in regard to acts for which as he said responsibility cannot be denied in spite of the element of destiny in them. Dr. Eric H. Erickson professor of human development and lecturer in psychiatry at Harvard University. Powerless to loose relation as a study of psychology and personality.

What do you say about man universally amongst small minority off which really develop personalities right. I would offer an infinity of undeveloped and lost possibilities. He is then he Christian values is the last and most. What does this inequality mean
inequality of personal responsibility no matter of individual differences. He has any quality comes to its height. And certainly it's not a matter of media Theo it's a matter of most practical accounts for all of us. It is he commands off see patterns who discover that they have got to feeble minded talk. All we see is son of a daughter with a believe Ted to deceive many talents in mind traffic wasting them and finally being deprived of them and it is he commenced. With skank 10 creative powers they have all just talk to buy it too and I am the Veeck Pfizer

If you look at the laws too much less and to us it's given this question has produced profound and all biblical right house and in Jesus him say it why many called and few elected so many quality in its deepest fall on. The midst of the off year election. The look of MT has given ways in and all its high Christianity you can find different ways in which the mystery is a poet though never moved. And each of them had and
has immense qualms he commands his followers a daily life of medians an even bigger audience of people. The first one comes from the Christian tradition. It takes of each man infinitely see into your sleeve and says that the off election is the mystery of C in school. Divine veil will seem to need to be choosers. And who can damned forms a community TV whom he rejects. Not many people accept to Daisy's believe which is actually a believe in any victory of judgment of our love and that means of our God.
But if not how can love inequality you no relation to his eternal be saw of what is the destiny of men. You know it comes from the east. It says that this life does NOT about destiny be ours our Cajuns in ours our lives as our present as our present life is determined by previous to arms and of art we have achieved our loss. However there will be no eternal destiny at all for any individual being the olivine into the one form that you see came not being judge and not being

No US head of life now is a he who has for love nor he who is empty and separated from it is separated in his destiny. He is a part of the universal destiny. It is this hidden you will need of the whole
creation in its own and in it in which CIA answer lies. You know I'm savage does not love inequality but rich and able to live with it. We are in each others as having And we are passed in each other's us not having all of this are giving and sharing and helping each other. We all participate in each other's sin and we all practice in each others as Grace as God himself in the sacrifice of sick eyes shows that he passed. You know our destiny.
