Moments of Enchantment; 70; Romaine Fielding and “The Golden God”

- Transcript
In the streets of Las Vegas, New Mexico, cavalry attacked the Revolutionary Army, a bomber flew overhead to give cover for the counterattack. More in a moment. This outbreak of Revolutionary violence on November the 23rd, 1913 was a scene from Romain Fielding's five-real silent epic, The Golden God. This movie was about the revolution of labor against the consolidated industries. A revolution Romain Fielding predicted would occur in 1950. Romain was both the author and the star of The Golden God. The studio where he shot the indoor scenes for this film still stands on Galena Street in Las Vegas. In 1915, another screen actor visited Las Vegas. The young movie Cowboy Tom Mix had been invited by Las Vegas businessmen Ludwig Ilfeld to see the Las Vegas rodeo. The rodeo was then known
as the Cowboys reunion. Tom Mix liked Las Vegas. He filmed seven westerns there, including the rancher's daughter and the hazards of Helen. These films established Tom Mix as a western star. Since then, Las Vegas has been the setting for over 150 films and scores of television shows and commercials.
