You accuse your host from over a week. John Davis. Well hello and welcome again to motor week we're glad to have you with us. If there's one thing to be said about Korean automaker Hyundai it is that they are impatient. Well it took nearly 50 years for Japanese brands to be permanently routed in America with domestic plants. A diverse range of products and larger market share. Hyundai is doing it in half the time and their latest salvo takes on the big guns of the global luxury market. With the Genesis it's a rear drive four door that is also impatient for success.
Hyundai expects their 2009 Gen. flagship sedan to be a true breakout product. Changing their image from a mass marketer to a premium brand and paving the way for the Genesis coupe and other luxury sport models to come. The world first laid eyes on this BMW 5 series pretender at the 2007 New York Auto Show. Initial impressions were of a substantial four door with graceful lines and reflection pool like surfaces in production form the large chrome grille with no Hyundai age anywhere to be found is bordered by Jewel of lamp clusters with optional auto leveling h ID headlights. The Genesis profile also speaks premium with a finely sculpted shape from stem to stern that's bright and with splashes of chrome while the back end continues
the premium theme adorned with wraparound alley detail lamps and shiny jewel exhaust pipes inside the Genesis hall so shines with the finish and soft touch materials that are equal to or better than European rivals. The artful dash unites flowing lines with leather aluminum and wood trim gauges stand down wall controls express a higher end guys. The standard leather heated seats are comfy and supportive with power adjusts for both driver and passenger. The VH music pours from a standard 11 speaker lexicon sound system. The brand also used in the Rolls-Royce Phantom and with eight standard airbags in electronic active head restraints. Front and side five star safety ratings were assured the wide rear seat makes room for three and has its own climate control. There's a chunky cup holder armrest which hides a small trunk passed through the trunk itself is large measuring in it.
Fifteen point nine cubic feet under the hood the rear drive Genesis defines its luxury with two variable valve timing engines. There's a familiar three point eight leader of the six with 290 horsepower and 264 pound feet of torque. Or there's Hyundai's new towel 4.6 leader V8 their first 8 cylinder for the US. It generates a brony 375 horses at three hundred thirty three pound feet of torque. That's more or is power but slightly less torque than AIDS found in the Lexus G-S and the Infinity M. Both engines made to a six speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode. Our test V8 yielded government fuel economy ratings of 17 city 25 highway we drove 21 mpg on premium gas. Gen. V8 energy impact scores a high eighteen barrels of oil consumed per year while its carbon footprint measures nine point six annual tonnes of CO2 emitted on the
track RBA Genesis was a delightful surprise. Charging from zero to 60 in a fast five point eight seconds and spreading the quarter mile and fourteen point three seconds at 103 mph the V8 maintains a strong build throughout the run. Chips are smooth well spaced and fall right in the heart of the power band and turns of driving dynamics the Genesis sports are nearly perfectly balanced chassis with standers debility and traction control. The sophisticated suspension is defined by five linked geometries in the front hand back through the twisties Genesys is far more agile than many large sedans relatively soft springs allow modest body roll but turn ins are quick steering is fast if a little light and the rear end is just loose enough to be fun. The result is a well mannered handler. Maybe not in BMW sleep. And no less impressive than Lexus and infinity with their first models. Still we know that some buyers will be unable to see past its Hyundai badging. No matter how discreetly it's you but as impatient as Hyundai is we're also sure that any stumbling blocks encountered by Genesis will be quickly swept away. Time now for Goss's garage.

Yeah nothing gets more basic than that that's what's connecting you to the road when you do change your tire whether because of where puncture. If you have a spokes will always replace the tube and always replace this rim strip this is a very inexpensive piece and it protects the tube from damage that could be caused by the nipples on the spokes You can see the indentations made on this one left without that protection the two can easily see some damage which could which could cost you on the road. OK now brakes they need to be checked regularly but got to take it a step further. Yeah you need to check both of them you can see that the one you're holding is still has it. You know just a little
bit a life left but it's matching padded shot and that cost a customer roader which is certainly more expensive than new paths. You know here's what the pants look like the new ash section. All right now let's talk about the engine and transmission. So over here we have some classic examples. What are we seeing here. This is a cam chain tensioner shoe and you can see the wear here to be inspected. Yeah that's what you'd prefer that look like. But you have to go another step further. It looks like this on the outside this one is much easier to see. But you really need to go look at both of them if you assume that the inside tensioner is going to look the same as the outside. You could like this custom or find yourself stranded. All right. Now another thing of course changing oil vitally important here we have an oil pump that's prematurely destroyed. Yeah this was due to a customer that wrote about 15000 miles but change their
oil once. You can see the excessive scoring on the oil pump and that's very expensive regular oil changes are very cheap. OK. Ham fisted do it yourself prepare right here. Yes. Perfect example of it. Customer decided to change the transmission fluid which is good but cross threaded the steel bolt and destroyed this transmission case a very expensive repair. Another mistake that people make is not using a new O-ring here this is less than a dollar. If you don't use a new O ring and properly seal the threads you'll find yourself over tightening the steel bolt and ripping out the aluminum threads thread sealer on the threads. OK now some really basic stuff here. Air filters on cars they don't have an effect on fuel economy just performance but on motorcycles. And in fact both mileage as well. Yes and keeping the dirt not just mileage but keep the dirt out of your motorcycle engine is absolutely basic you
can see on the inside of this filter how the grime is starting to come through and that grit will act as a very effective abrasive on cylinder walls and other moving components. OK now another thing that a lot of people overlook when they're doing their own work thread lockers. Absolutely use the appropriate stuff. Use your factory service manual for guidance. We're talking about Camp motor sports. Now this isn't your bug infested tug of war battle site that we knew but rather a specialty camp nestled on the rolling hills around Virginia International
Raceway. It's for kids that want to experience real racecar driving sports. Yet still be kids. And since there's a kid in all of us we see an F1 I-Reporter Yolanda vastus off to get a feel for what these car camp kids are in for. On your mark get set go. Take the competitive nature of the NASCAR track training the right stop car dirt covered forest filled with road rally. All right with that. Right I meant Time Warner and you've got the makings of a summer camp with the motor sports theme written all over it. It's just a really really cool program. Director Diane Tyrrell says can't motor sport is designed to give these budding race car enthusiasts a chance to get out of the stands and onto the track. So it's not just being a fan it's you get an opportunity in a seat and that's a pretty rare thing for him. The week long program is chock full of activity. You're going to get a campers get to test their driving skills in these specially designed dune
buggy style go cart instructors go along for the bumpy ride as they teach each driver how to handle turns on this dusty dirt track. Fifteen year old Jose Ponce who came all the way from Ecuador says the intense one on one training has helped boost his confidence. I think I'm I'm better now. I'm driving I have no experience on dirt course. Oh oh that's a good thing. And just like the sign says there's plenty to do and lots to learn at this one of a kind camp designed for kids. Ages 9 to 60 was the picture challenge teaches kids how to work together in a time competition against other teams already. Are they really good wrestle together everybody right participates in everything. Team building is a big part of the campus focus because we're really looking at kids learning how to develop relationships how do they get along with each other how do you make a friend. While some of the activities like building car frames out of popsicle sticks also require a
group effort. Most of the time the campers are out there on their own practicing various drills in a scaled down stock car. Today's exercise avoided steering. It's the exact same exercise that they use a professional adult racing schools. You're a 20 year race veteran says he's not trying to mold the next up and coming motor sports athlete. He's more interested in helping these young campers develop safe driving. Things like looking ahead paying attention being smooth the controls I think every driver should have those skills. Ten year old Mae Cowan has benefited from Kevin's expertise. He's a really good instructor he explains a lot of stuff beforehand. The North Carolina native knows as a girl she's outnumbered at the camp but thinks she and her female friends have held their own. I think that it definitely gives the girls. You know it gives him a lot of determination and perseverance to push through and try to be the best that they can be one of the highlights of can't motor sport is the ride

For example they sit right here in the front not in the back so they can see what it's like from a driver's perspective. Newcomer Brandon Powell describes the twists and turns as an amazing adrenaline rush. I just had a whole lot of fun and one day to do it again. And that's just the kind of enthusiasm Dyan hopes to generate at a special camp that's likely to become a summertime tradition. We're always spinning our key ring for a new upstart. So let's see what's tempting this week. The Dodge Ram has a long heritage of serving America's loyal full size pickup truck
buyers and the all new 2009 ram 15:00 is packed with features designed to cement its role as a personal use favorite the RAM is built on a new low torsion frame for improved handling and better control of noise vibration and ride quality furthered by the use of a multi link live axle pull spring rear suspension replacing traditional leaf springs. It can be upgraded to full Harman Kardon surround sound and a rear seat entertainment system with twin 8 inch video screens a 60 40 split rear seat is well padded and allows quick access to the cargo area as does the optional power lift gate.
