The next piece we have is more of a drama item, going back to the time of after Roosevelt had gone, I'd imagine it's up close to Roosevelt's second term, it's quite a political record. Yeah, imagine that came out about 1934, prosperity in politics as two parts, parts one and two by Ged Tanner and his skillet liquors. Thank you, I got a letter here for you, it's been here about a week, here it is. What does it say Ged, is it anything about a job for the skillet liquor? I said it, yes sir, the victor people want a card with more graph form records, I believe they want to sell good too. Well that shows you boys the business of picking up, the victor wants us to record some more records, reading why we haven't recorded sooner is because the people didn't have the money to spend for them and that shows you the business of picking up considerably. Yes siry, I know it is, I'll tell you what let's do, let's play another tune so we'll be in good shape for making these records, let's play Gonna Raise a Rookus Tonight. You know I'll tell you what I'd do if I was up there in the White House, I'd run it, I'd just take all the money and divide it
deeply with everyone. Well you couldn't do that Ted, you'd only have $3 .60 and what did you do when you spent that? Oh I'd just take that and divide it again. Well I'm glad that Roosevelt's in the White House instead of Ted Hawkins because I imagine times it shall be bad then. They sure would, they'd be at the best. Yeah we've got a fine president up there and he's one man that's going to get my vote any time he wants to. He's a real man fellas, you know he don't always think of himself like most politicians, he's got time to thank other folks. Well I think of the smiles and the good health he's bringing all those sick folks down to Warm Springs, Georgia. If that was all he'd done I'd be for him lock, stock and barrel, but that's just some of the good he's doing. What do you say, let's play that new tune of Raleigh's, Old Man Depression, get on your way. You know since the election Republicans have been
awful scarce down south, the other day a fellow drove up to Old Man Johnson's cabin down on Goose Creek. You know Old Man Johnson don't you fellas? Yeah sure do, he's got him too. Yeah you know he don't beat the devil around the stump at all, he just tells you what he thinks. The fellow says, can I find a Republican around here anywhere? Old Man Johnson said, I've been living these mountains about all my life and I've done a right smarter hunting and trapping, got lots of hides tacked up on the side of the barn. But if I ever kill one of them animals, I don't know nothing about it, but you sure welcome, out there and see if you can find one in a place like I tell you, let's play another tune, gang, then we got to be going. Let's play Going Down the Road Feeling Glad. And I walk right in the distance. So long Ted, see you later. Goodbye Ted, miss senior boy. Goodbye boy. Frank, had, when I played up here one night, we had a lot of people
call me and want to hear some Jesse McRinnell style picking. I know you do some of that, so later on you think maybe you can do some of that. Have a lot of manland players listen to this station. Oh really? Yeah, and a lot of them call me to make sure he was going to be on night and I said, well he probably got hit by a tornado, but if he didn't, he'd just been here late. How are we doing? I didn't know you could do a DJ work. When I first met you a few years ago before you started playing music, know, what really amazed me, you didn't even play an instrument that time, then all of sudden you came up as good as you are. Next time I sing you turn out to be a great musician. Well, thank you. When I come down here tonight, I didn't know I was going to be doing any DJ work, so now you're doing all DJ work. had to excuse each other about every half hour. For those of that are just getting into bluegrass, Frank Wakefield is a legend in bluegrass, and he's known as a musician's musician, and it's something that all the musicians that play bluegrass seriously know, and the more serious you are about it, the more you know about bluegrass,
the more you understand what he's doing. Sometimes when I first started out, I didn't understand hardly nothing he was doing, and the more I learned, it seemed like the less I understand. one time down at Sittaco Park, Frank went down there on a picnic with us, Bill Monroe was there, Bill came out and had a lot of good things to say about Frank, and he took Frank's mandolin and tuned it up in this strange tuning. Those of you that heard the show a few weeks ago remember the detuning we played Get Up John in, and Bill Monroe had Frank's mandolin and that tuning, and then he gave it after he was done using it for Get Up John, he gave it back to Frank, and he took his own mandolin and standard tuning and played Arkansas Travel just as hard as he could go. Well, Frank didn't have no time to tune up or anything, see, and he just grabbed that mandolin and that tuned it, played the tenor and the baritone all around it, and Bill's eyes had to bug out, and his nose got runny and everything else was going so fast for it. I remember that now, Ron, that's
amazing, it's the first time I thought about it since you said that, and I was in such a predicament there I was scared because I knew it was in all that tuning, strictly wouldn't it do Arkansas Traveling? Boy, I have to really do a lot of improvising, I tell Boy, it sounded good. I don't know, of course, you don't have Bill Monroe playing with you now, so you won't be able to go too fast now with a child like this, Arkansas. Oh, there he is.
Did I do it right? No, you did it just right, I guess I messed it up. No, you did it perfect, that sounded really sound We was trying to speed up, see, but Marth Wright has got some bad, Frank had to play some rhythm for him, so we'd get too messed up. No, that really sounded good. All the bands you've picked down
through the years have played this number here, the Bluegrass Breakdown, so it's the next number up, and Blake is ready to play for you. Oh, there he is.
Oh, there There he is.
Thank you. I have a couple solos
I'd like to sing for you tonight. And the first one's an old timer called the Muse Kinder Blues, you might have heard of it. Good morning, captain. Good morning. Good Good morning, captain. You need another Muse Kinder.
I don't need another Muse Kinder. Good day. Good morning.
