La colección Línea Abierta incluye más de 8,100 transmisiones del único programa diario de radio pública en español que se transmite a nivel nacional. Línea Abierta sigue al aire hoy, procedente de los estudios de Radio Bilingüe en Oakland y Fresno, California, con una transmisión semanal desde México. Los programas de la colección datan de 1997, el tercer año de la serie, hasta el 2021, e incluyen Noticiero Latino, el servicio de noticias en español de Radio Bilingüe cada hora. The Línea Abierta collection includes more than 8,100 broadcasts from the only daily Spanish-language public radio call-in show aired nationally. Línea Abierta remains on the air today, originating from Radio Bilingüe’s studios in Oakland and Fresno, California, with a weekly broadcast from Mexico. Programs in the collection date from 1997, the third year of the series, through 2021, and include Noticiero Latino, Radio Bilingüe’s hourly Spanish-language newsfeed. The Línea Abierta Collection offers interviews with a variety of renowned guests including the pioneering labor and civil rights leader Bert Corona; United Farm Workers vice-president Dolores Huerta; Reynaldo Garza, the first Mexican-American appointed to a federal court; Latino members of the Carter administration, SBA administrator Aida Alvarez and White House Public Liaison Chief Maria Echaveste; officials and politicians in Mexico; Rodrigo Asturias, an ex-commander of the former Guatemalan guerrilla movement URNG, and Rosalina Tuyuk, a Mayan congresswoman in Guatemala; and Radio Bilingüe’s co-founder Hugo Morales, who discusses the origins of the station and network. The collection also includes two special multipart series on Mexican elections and issues. Topics include farmworkers’ issues, civil rights, health, race, bilingual education, and Mexican culture.

Lanzado como un programa de una hora en febrero de 1995 en la red de Radio Bilingüe, Línea Abierta se expandió a dos horas en agosto de 1996. Es transmitido por estaciones afiliadas en todo Estados Unidos, México y Puerto Rico. La primera estación de Radio Bilingüe, KSJV-FM en Fresno, California, transmitió su primera transmisión el 4 de julio de 1980. Conocida como “La Voz que Rompió el Silencio,” como pionera en español y estación de radio comunitaria bilingüe, Radio Bilingüe inicialmente sirvió a una comunidad de trabajadores agrícolas con música de México y programas de asuntos públicos sobre temas como reforma migratoria, pesticidas, derecho laboral, educación bilingüe, salud, clima y deportes. En 1985, Radio Bilingüe lanzó Noticiero Latino, el primer noticiero diario nacional en español. La estación se expandió a una red de 13 estaciones no comerciales en California y el suroeste. La colección se digitalizó durante el Proyecto de digitalización de archivos estadounidenses de la Corporación para la radiodifusión pública y se conservó y se puso a disposición en el Archivo.

Launched as a one-hour program in February 1995 on the Radio Bilingüe network, Línea Abierta expanded to two hours in August 1996. It is carried by affiliated stations throughout the U.S., Mexico, and Puerto Rico. Radio Bilingüe’s first station, KSJV-FM in Fresno, California, aired its first broadcast on July 4, 1980. Known as “La Voz que Rompió el Silencio” (The Voice That Broke the Silence), as a trail-blazing Spanish-language and bilingual community radio station, Radio Bilingüe initially served a community of farmworkers with music from Mexico and public affairs programs on topics such as immigration reform, pesticides, labor law, bilingual education, health, weather, and sports. In 1985, Radio Bilingüe launched Noticiero Latino, the first national Spanish-language daily newscast. The station expanded into a network of 13 non-commercial stations in California and the Southwest. The collection was digitized during the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s American Archive Digitization Project and preserved and made available in the American Archive of Public Broadcasting.
