- Description
- This program is a candid portrait of the author of Invisible Man, the novel acclaimed in a Book Week magazine poll of 200 authors and critics as the best work of American fiction written during the past 20 years. Born in Oklahoma City in 1914, Ralph Ellison majored in music at Tuskegee Institute, 1933-1936, and then came to New York. After a varied career, he became interested in writing and since 1939 has written short stories, articles, criticism, and one novel, Invisible Man. Filmed in the study of his Manhattan apartment, this program presents Mr. Ellison discussing the function of the writer in society; how he came to write the award-winning Invisible Man, the story of a Negro who emerges from the South and tries to find his place in the world; his own involvement with the work and how he feels a work of art should engage all f a writers being. He discusses his long-awaited, soon-to-be published work in progress and reads from it, then goes on to comment on how the Negro church has contributed to the eloquence of most Negro writers, and to the American literary heritage in general. Mr. Ellison, who lectures widely and teaches, discusses his role as a lecturer and teacher, and how teaching keeps him in touch with the younger generation.
